I like it, too. I wonder if Cora's slotting him in games against right-handed pitchers was at Bloom's request, to see how versatile Reffy could be. I think he passed the test.
Versatility? Does Refsnyder have both kinds of music, country and western?
He has played fewer than 300 innings outside of left field over the past two seasons and none in the infield. Steve Pearce was still a cromulent second baseman at Refsnyder’s age.
The money is immaterial and the OBP has value, even adjusting for a fortunate BABIP, but Refsnyder offers less versatility than Kevin Romine or Bob Zupcic did.
So they basically guaranteed him a salary next year, when he was arb eligible for the final time, and in exchange for an option for the following year. Seems like a fair deal. Rob is 32 and has made ~$1.5M in his career, so I imagine guaranteeing himself at least $1.9M more was appealing.
The underlying data suggest Refsnyder was even better against RHP than LHP last year, though much unluckier.
His line drive rate is 4th highest among 376 major league hitters over 2022-23 (min. 250 PA).
I like it, he’s a pretty great fourth outfielder, even if we’ve often used him like a fifth.

Its a good deal. Cheap 4th OF who will start and bat down the order every 5th day when Ohtani pitches.
I guess I am confused by your comment. Ohtani DH's, doesn't play the field, in order to preserve his arm. They don't need to make any changes when he pitches from normal.

I read it as... on days Ohtani is on the mound and isn't one of the 3 starting outfielders, a 4th outfielder (Ref) will need to play the field not DH, and likely bat down in the order.

That’s what initially thought, but as @LogansDad correctly pointed out, Ohtani doesn’t really play the OF anymore.

Not since coming to the US, he only has 8 career innings in MLB in the OF, everything else is DH/P.
Nothing to dislike about this deal. RFsnyder has pretty much been more than anyone expected and a bonus at what he's being paid. He genuinely seems to enjoy playing for the Sox and there is also a team option here for 2025. This makes Duvall's return a bit more interesting. Does Tapia have options remaining?
The $2M guarantee Refsnyder is getting ($1.85M salary, $150k buyout of 2025 option) is roughly what he would’ve gotten in arbitration, assuming he’s a part-time player the rest of the way and sees his BABIP regress as you’d expect. So I see the deal as Refsnyder getting that money locked in now, in exchange for agreeing to a favorable club option for 2025, when he’ll be 34 years old. That’s a good deal for Refsnyder, who’s unlikely to get enough playing time to convince an arbitrator he’s worth mid-seven figures. It’s not as clearly a win for the club, particularly if you believe (as I do) that the option is unlikely to be exercised. But the dollars aren’t material, and there’s something to be said for rewarding a guy who has accepted a limited role gracefully. As you said: good for Refsnyder.
