I wonder if they could somehow turn JD into Campusano now that the Padres have an open DH spot. Gotta figure they're all in.
Had the same thought, but probably means the Sox are paying all/most of the Hosmer contract. (*if the Hosmer deal isn't done done)

"Early reports saying SD picking up most of Hosmer's remaining salary..."
Nearly 46 million I am reading.

Helps to read what I responded to...
I did. And again, "most of $46M" doesn't mean "nearly $46M". It could literally mean $23.1M. So even if *you* knew what you meant, I was clarifying that the number in your post was the salary not the picked up amount. It could've been unclear.

It really wasn't a shot at you, but if you wanna feel like it was, I hope you feel better now.

Between Pham and McGuire, this team seems to have filled its quota of stupid assholes, and Herrera is no upgrade over anyone at this point.
Personally I’ve been waiting for the Choo Choo with Square Wheels or the Cowboy with a Squirt Gun that shoots Jelly.

In Chaim I’m trying to trust.

I don’t understand any of their deadline moves at this point. I keep waiting for something major to unfold but … nada.

Things seem eerily quiet. We've known about Hosmer for two hours now, but still nothing about the terms.
It seems likely to me that the terms are conditional.

1) Sox trade JD and/or Eovaldi to get under tax - SD picks up more $ - Sox stay under tax.
OR
2) Sox fail to get under tax - SD subsidizes less/gives better prospect - Sox stay over tax.

We may not know terms until 7:30 ETish.

That would be McGuire.

I'm enjoying watching the trading action and reading the posts, although I don't think this should be any sort of referendum on Bloom's ability or his larger strategy. He has a largely injured team that won't even do him the favor of sucking so badly that he can go Straight Sell and start plotting for the winter.

He could absolutely do that by trading Eovaldi and JD in the next hour. That might get us to suck enough to get a top ten pick.

It sounds like trading the starting catcher was a bridge too far for the team with the lip service about wanting to contend. I don't think that trade is going to wind up on a greatest hits list for Bloom when it's all over.

No, he isn't. At least not on any current list he isn't. He's closer to 20 and needs to be on the 40.
Bad NBA draft joke combined with a bad outdated prospect rankings joke combined with a bad what does it matter how a prospect is ranked within any given team's organization joke.

MLB Network scroll describes Groome as the Sox's #11 prospect, for what it's worth. Every team values prospects differently, so it really doesn't matter, but the poster you're responding to isn't pulling that ranking from nowhere.

I like groome. Loved the pick at the time. Kid has worked hard to overcome so many hurdles, and was probably unfairly judged by some as a high school prospect for character issues.

But his stuff is way behind where it was before and he was a dfa candidate.

He's not a worthless prospect and there's a chance he figures out how to be an effective back end starter but his window was all but shut here due to service time.

Folks need to calm down.

Tremendous work once again by the Front Office. Make the team worse and alienate your best players. Not sure that's the Tampa model they had in mind when they hired Bloom but he's saving the club money so Henry won't let him go anywhere
Lol GTHO here with that, they are selling because the team has so many injuries and those that were not injured have severely under performed this year (see JDM, and Xander hitting for way less power than last year) ... And there are too many holes because of that to be "buyers"

Xander should know that....

The team expected to be better, everybody loves Vaz (who X has known over ten years), and X has free agency looming.

I couldn’t be less shocked to hear X is feeling down.

Guess there was no market for JD - surprising to me. Think we’d hear of that already.
I’m old enough to have seen plenty of trades not announced until after the deadline and we still have 30 minutes. Let’s wait and see, but I hope you’re wrong.

Well, then neither understand the complex nature of the business of baseball. This constant bashing is exhausting. X is an adult and he will be ok. Of course he's down. The team is worse than it was supposed to be and his friend just got traded.
I think it’s just the double speak. Trade away the leader, and replace with a bunch of nothings that don’t benefit the team (Hosmer actually will - but Dalbec also seems to be a second half player).

So you improve with Hosmer, but you downgrade catching a lot. It’s kind of just swimming in place.

I’d have preferred attempting to get better, or selling off more pieces (JD) so we could actually get pieces for the farm for later.

Just feels like we collect Hansel Robles types while our competitors constantly get better at the deadline. We are still in the playoff hunt, and I could see the team going on a sustained run and getting back into it. But it’sgoing to be harder when you trade away your team’s heart.

Definitely want more things to happen. Things happening is fun.

JD/Nate/JBJ/Plawecki/Hill/Sawamura/Dalbec etc etc.
