The Sox agreed to a minor-league deal with righthanded reliever Casey Janssen pending a physical. The 34-year-old will report to Single A Lowell initially.

Janssen was released out of spring training by the San Diego Padres and has not pitched since. He was one of Toronto’s top relievers from 2006-14, posting a 1.21 WHIP and 3.52 ERA. He had 90 saves for the Blue Jays.

Shoulder pain diminished his fastball velocity and Janssen struggled at times for the Washington Nationals last season. He appeared in 48 games and had a 4.95 ERA.

His ERA last Aug. 27 was 3.13. He had two horrendous appearances on back-to-back days on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 (1.1 IP total, 7 ER) which ruined his ERA line for the season. He didn't pitch very well in September and maybe it was the shoulder that did him in, but he was effective at times for Washington. K rate has been down in 2014 and 2015, so this could very well be the end for him, but I'm not opposed to taking a flyer.

Seems like a high risk (of physical breakdown), high reward (elite stuff) signing -- appropriate for a team with pennant ambitions.
