If you "remove" his bad games to find his potential, shouldn't one also remove his two best games?

I don't care either way. They need bulk innings and he provides that with some upside

He's not very good. But he's fine as a back-end starter that has the potential to be good on occasion. Doesn't cost too much. It's fine as a signing. You need guys like this on the roster too.

Let's not over estimate the Perez signing. Bloom didn't pick up the option after 2020 because Perez is not a 6 million pitcher but when the price come down Bloom jumped at signing him because he did a decent job in 2020. This was all about the $$ and the 1.75 million that Bloom saved the Sox.
A $6m pitcher doesn't have to be very good at all, at least in the pre covid mlb economy. Career average Martin Perez would easily top that as an averagish starting pitcher that makes a lot of starts. They likely declined the option because they were expecting better pitchers might be available on potential bargains, and then that didn't really happen so they went back to him.
