Matt Barnes is 3rd... wow. 2nd in MR. 412 games.

1 is Stanley 673 games, 85 starts
2 is Wakefield 590 games, 430 starts. He has the most career starts.

Story last played in a game in July. Yet still has hit 6 more homers and driven in 9 more runs (than xander) and 12 more runs than JDM.

Total games played:
Story: 81
Xander: 114
JDM: 102

players should look in the mirror if they want someone to be pissed at.

Someone will say Bloom should have foreseen this. Someone else will say it is Cora’s fault for not motivating the players properly.

they will both be wrong.
I think it will be more the former then the latter if the critique of his off season is any indicator

The spread between Brasier’s FIP (3.42) and ERA (5.98) is the largest I have ever seen. 1.2 hr, 1.9 bb, 9.1 k are good peripherals. He’s given up a .355 babip, +20% higher than his career average. Hard to figure. (Barnes is somewhat similar, a not great 4.49 FIP but a terrible 6.17 ERA).
Having bad OF defense and a 27% line drive percentage probably contributes to this, I would imagine.

Just saw that Hosmer exited today’s game with back issues, so I’ll be the one to ask: If he goes on the IL, what are the odds Casas gets the call?

During the game, radio crew was talking about Franchy Cordero being pulled from Worcester game today, speculating it could be for call up.

The timing is suggestive of coming up to replace Hosmer, but it was awfully fast and before any possible diagnosis could have been made. I wonder if it was just a pre-emptive move because tomorrow's game is in a relatively remote location (Williamsport) that will take more effort to get to than a typical MLB city. Like if the game was at Camden, they could afford to wait until morning to make a call and he could still make it to the park in time. Hopefully they won't need to activate him at all.

Very possibly. It could also be for Pham. Either way, Cordero says he's headed to Williamsport

I believe the NESN studio folks said the Sox get an extra roster spot for tomorrow's game, and it's Franchy.

Confirmation of the extra roster spot. No explanation why the teams are getting it. I can only guess that it has to do with the additional/unusual travel. Did the Field of Dreams game involve the extra man too?

Maybe they're expecting a player or two (JD is a prime candidate for the Sox.) to have a sore back after a long ride on a bus to Williamsport.

According to this NESN article, it's specifically because it's for the Little League Classic Game. Must be a gimmick to separate it from the other regular season games.

Seeing news about Eovaldi being hurt again. If so, if he has to miss any time, then it's time to show the Plawster the door and hope someone claims him.

If Bogaerts elects to opt in to the balance of his contract, the Red Sox could finish the season above the Luxury Tax threshold, below the Orioles in the standings, and without a single one of their 10 pending free agents worthy of a qualifying offer.

I don't think he has to opt in and I'm not sure what next year's status has to do with this this season's LT.

You’re missing the point - if X opts in, none of the FA may be worth a QO (debatable, of course). The other things are possible / likely to happen regardless.

Unless Eovaldi needs another Tommy John surgery or something equivalent, he’s worth a QO.

Oh that's a good graphic, thanks! So that shows that BOS is right up there with the top teams here, I bet that has risen a lot since Bloom took over.

Yes, I believe Lucchino axed a bunch after Theo departed, and I'm not sure how many Dombrowski had working.

I would also like to see totals for amount spent on in person scouting at all levels, I bet the Yankees and Dodgers are way way ahead of everyone else on that in recent years.

It predates Bloom. The Sox analytics department got big enough in 2015 or 2016 that a couple departments had to move into basement space in Fenway and across Jersey street above the team store. Maybe it shrunk a little from there, but the surge was around then.

White Sox having only 5 is pretty telling along with who their manager is.

How many members of the analytics department will it take to waive a white flag? (Apologies for snark)

I understand why the MLBPA ended the Waiver Trade system, but it sure would be nice if they could have seen these last few weeks and decided to sell now.

Sell what? Most of the sellable pieces are injured or playing poorly. Not sure the extra three weeks of data helps all that much.

They can still waive JD and hope he gets claimed to save some cash, but they aren’t getting any relief from Eovaldi’s contract, and theoretically, they still may offer him a QO. Will never understand why they supposedly didn’t consider moving X, seems like a potential missed opportunity (although of course he had a NTC and could have vetoed any deal). The worst case scenario of not dealing these guys, not getting anything for them, and not resigning them, seems fairly plausible.

Eh — anything might be better than nothing. Eovaldi (depending on the injury), JD, Kiké, etc. Maybe the QO is the best they can do, but I’d like the option.

And I slightly disagree on 3 weeks of data. On August 2nd i believe the Sox were a game above .500 & 2 games out of the 3rd Wild Card. They’re now under .500 and 6 games out, and it’s 3 weeks later. That to me is the difference between “in the hunt” and “out of the hunt.”

I meant the three weeks wouldn't help selling very much rather than the decision of whether or not to sell. If JD wasn't drawing enough interest to trade him on August 2, I doubt three more weeks of mediocrity from him (and three less weeks of utility for the acquiring team) raised his value noticeably. Same for Eovaldi and Kike.

I understand the idea of getting something for them if the QO isn't an option, but I think merely freeing up their salary allotments this winter to spend on other players might be enough that missing out on one more lottery ticket prospect is a negligible loss.

It's very clear that X had no interest in going anywhere, so what would the benefit have been in the Sox trying to move him? It's bad for the Sox with no upside. It's also possible that they did consider moving him, had a discussion with him about if he'd have any interest in going anywhere, and when he said no then they made it publicly clear he wasn't going anywhere and X made it publicly clear he didn't want to go anywhere.

As I said before, if Eovaldi goes on the IL, then they should waive or DFA Plawecki STAT and call up Wong, or Hernández (to see what he has to offer). I doubt he gets claimed, but you never know. But there is no reason to keep him around if he's not going to be catching Eovaldi.

Is there a chance they just shut Eovaldi down if they fall out of it by the end of the month?

What do they gain shutting Eovaldi down? I mean, if he physically can't pitch, that's one thing. But if he can recover from whatever is currently ailing him and pitch again this season, as a pending free agent, he's going to want to throw. They're paying him through the end of the season, they might as well get something from him. There is no tomorrow to preserve him for.

Well, at some point, winning more games isn’t actually worth anything. Granted, they don’t really have any pitchers in AAA that are worth getting a look at who aren’t already up; but if they did, I could see an argument where it makes sense to give Nate’s potential starts to someone else. What do they gain from getting more starts out of him? Presumably, they have already decided whether they want to bring him back or not .

Can they make him a coach and get under the salary tax level that way? Plawecki and JD, too?

The people watching at home or in the ballpark might want to see their favorite team win games. There's entertainment value in watching a well played baseball game even if one or both of the teams isn't going to the playoffs. They're paying Nate $17 million a year to provide some of that value.

Not to mention that, if he's healthy, Eovaldi could (and probably should) file a grievance against the Red Sox for suppressing his potential market by not giving him a chance to perform.
This notion that they should just shut down players since they're out of it is, to be kind, dubious.

On the other hand, if Evoladi is legitimately hurt, he isn’t helping his market by continuing to show that he can’t get the hop on his fastball anymore while his valued stats continue to tumble.

Of course, but no one has suggested continuing to pitch him if he's too injured to continue
