Red Sox hook Crochet for Kyle Teel, Braden Montgomery, Chase Meidroth and Wikelman Gonzalez

Crochet was one of my most desired trade targets. I'm thrilled. I have some concerns about how many innings he will throw, but the stuff is ridiculous. Now for another arm. Buehler?

Edit: Screw it. Get Burnes too.
Absolutely agreed with this.

I think people who are upset don't understand just how filthy Crochet's stuff is. He has the ceiling to win the Cy Young next season. Here's the top 20 pitchers in MLB with 140+ IP last season ranked by xFIP.

Be excited. We are (on the verge of) getting an ace!

Who needs a catcher for the next decade anyway. Oh and our #1 pick last year who no one has ever even seen play in any Red Sox uniform.

Great.

His upside is worth the risk, IMO.

If you trust in their ability to keep building the farm system, this is exactly the type of move you make.

Hate isn’t a strong enough word for me. Teel is my favorite prospect. All prospects have risks, and we need pitching, but with out ‘glut’ of middle infielders in the system I assumed that is where we would pull from.

With the Robo Zone, how important will pitch framing really be?

I'm fine losing Wikelman (Crochet is what Wikelman could be), and Meidroth probably isn't that much either. Montgomery is the extra piece that's a high price here.

And of course, the catching situation goes back to being trash. Is Sean Murphy truly available?

OUCH.

I want an extension announced by the time he's introduced.

And a real catcher announced before then.

Damn...when it was just Teel+ I thought they could then flip Montgomery for Cease. Glad to have Crochet, but that's steep.

Trade from a position of abundance, not from a position of need.
Young pitching is the most valuable commodity in the game. You have to trade something valuable to get it unless you want to pay through the nose in free agency. They were one of the few teams with an elite catching prospect to deal.

I think this is about as good as we could have hoped for. Teel is a nice prospect but seems like he might end up just an average hitter. I know that's great for a catcher, but like, Wong was more than an average hitter last year. And Montgomery is wholly redundant with other top prospects and young players on the team.

I'm fine with Teel. Really like the kid and know we need catching in the organization, but catching prospects are a crap shoot. He could be the next Swihart and we just got an ace for him. Gotta trade talent to get talent.

The Coney Island of my mind
So the question is injury-risk - which is a question for all starters.
People seem to forget that when we traded for Pedro there were major concerns about his frame/delivery and whether he would last longterm.
I hate to lose Teel of course, but I would love to have Crochet in the rotation
Pedro Martinez had thrown 500+ innings in the three years before he arrived in Boston. Crochet has been rather less available to pitch in recent seasons because of...well, you know. You see the problem with the comparison, no?

So no amount of money is too much; and all amounts of prospects is also too much.

I'm guessing Breslow decided that waiting for Wikelman to stop walking the ballpark was not a sound idea. And Meidroth's big skill is walking. Maybe he's Youkilis, who could also hit; but maybe he stops walking AND stops making contact in MLB.
To me it's really Teel and Montgomery, which seems about right, given the cost of pitching.

I hate hate hate this.

Watching Connor Wong catch was the thing I hated most about the 2024 Red Sox and now they are not only not fixing that, they are actively ensuring I have to keep doing it forever.

Would have much preferred Mayer going.
I wonder if the Sean Murphy deal is the next piece.

I must join the Disappointed Chorus, as I was really looking forward to Teel. On the other hand, Wong is a very good hitter, and I stupidly have never been able to understand why Varitek and Co. haven't been able to fix him.

I can't believe people are upset at this. They land a young starter with two years of control whose stuff is crazy good. We keep Casas, Abreu and our top 3?
for those of you wishing we would give them Mayer instead maybe Mayers injuries worried Chicago.

Why the hell is Braden Montgomery in this deal?

I understand that OF is an area of strength and pitching obviously a huge weakness, but we just traded two of our top 5 prospects for a guy that’s going to demand a market rate deal and has 2 years of control left.

Breslow must reek of desperation in the hotel lobby at this point.

I understand people are sad to see Montgomery go but he hasn't played a single MiLB game yet. It's possible he tears the cover off the ball and we regret this. It's also possible he completely flames out.

I get why it's frustrating but they probably wanted two top 100 guys for Crochet, and Montgomery had to be the least painful of our glut.
