If true, I think I'm OK with it being Teel. A great catcher can be a huge boost to a lineup but you can make do with a defensive whiz/pitcher whisperer who comes cheap enough, and it can take a long while for guys to fully grow into the position anyway. Sad to lose him if true but he is the least painful to lose imo. I think folks have been sleeping on Mayer too much as well as the team's security at the SS position long-term.

(Edit: Obviously, we do need to get our hands on a defensive whiz/pitcher whisperer)

This is a major major overpay in my opinion for a guy who has had 1 good season. Teel is the future for an especially weak position in this organization.

Crochet was one of my most desired trade targets. I'm thrilled. I have some concerns about how many innings he will throw, but the stuff is ridiculous. Now for another arm. Buehler?

Edit: Screw it. Get Burnes too.

I hate hate hate this.

Watching Connor Wong catch was the thing I hated most about the 2024 Red Sox and now they are not only not fixing that, they are actively ensuring I have to keep doing it forever.

Would have much preferred Mayer going.

Need to know what the "+" is before I officially react. Kind of bummed that they are losing Teel. Catching isn't exactly a strength in this organization. However, if they didn't give up any other premium assets (meaning none of Abreu, Anthony, Mayer, Campbell, Montgomery) then I can't complain too much

Gonna have to trust them on their evaluation of Crochet and Teel, because the possibility of a plus-offensive, solid defensive catcher holding down that position for his prime years is really enticing. Hate to see him go.

You have no idea if they are done adding at catcher or not

listen, I love Kyle Teel, but he was clearly in the 4th tier of the big 4.

Oof. Teel is a lot, but it's possible, of course, that he never pans out.

And Crochet is really, really good. So at the end of the day I'm happy.

Interested to see how the people who've been melting down for the better part of a week because the Sox wouldn't spend the big bucks respond to this.

Still leaves us in a spot where we need a long-term solution at catcher, as Wong ain't it. But I'm thrilled we didn't give up Abreu, Mayer, Anthony, or Campbell.

Wouldn't it be fair to say the same about Crochet, whose 1 good season is 1 more than Teel. (No snark intended.....but they also need pitching)

So the question is injury-risk - which is a question for all starters.
People seem to forget that when we traded for Pedro there were major concerns about his frame/delivery and whether he would last longterm.
I hate to lose Teel of course, but I would love to have Crochet in the rotation

Hate it. I thought Teel was a big piece of the future.

Still need a FA pitcher. Doesn’t have to be Burnes any more

Edit: after a few days, I don’t hate it. Competition for this guy was fierce. Glad they got the deal done

If we had to move one of the 4 for Crochet, I’m fine with it being Teel. I hate seeing ANY big prospects go BUT they desperately need a top SP.

Crochet's "one good season" was leaps and bounds better than we've had in a while around here. I like acquiring him if the cost is Teel plus a few lottery tickets.

I'm assuming this makes a Sean Murphy acquisition more likely. If he comes with the stud SP prospect, all the better.

We still need Burnes or another ToR pitcher and a bat. We can still salvage this offseason.

Yeah, it was a knee jerk reaction, and is also definitely more about not wanting to watch Connor Wong catch anymore.

I really, really hope they address the catching situation.

Gotta see what else they gave up, but I'm ok with this. Sucks to lose one of the Big 4, but Teel probably has the lowest ceiling of the 4.

The Sox obviously have to figure out who the catcher of the future is, but there is time for that.

Dang... really wanted it to be Mayer with 3 of our top prospects SS. Have to give up good guys to get good guys though.
If we grab Burnes, our pitching will look very good.

I'm sick of watching Wong catch too, but Teel wasn't the answer for that particular problem. He's only had 28 games at AAA, and didn't exactly light it on fire-- which is fine, he's very young for the level, but by all indications both the offense and defense need time to develop, and defensively that might take a while given the intricacies of pro catching. Losing any high level prospect always hurts, but if he's actually the centerpiece that feels pretty good to me.

What if Teel is Blake Swihart 2.0?
indeed...I recall a time when there was interest in Swihart, but the Sox passed. Some prospects pan out, some don't. Crochet had great numbers in MLB as a 24/25 year old. I have been excited about Teel, but this deal makes sense to me (assuming Casas/Abreu someone else like that isn't part of it).

Honestly this is the kind of deal we had to bite the bullet and make. Teel may end up being a stud, but he may also flame out. He was good overall last year, but not insanely good. If we wanted Crochet we were going to have to give up something good.

I’m perfectly ok with Teel going out. I may be in the minority, but I really think his position was driving his high prospect ranking. His ceiling seems to be an average offensive player who happens to play catcher. He’s nowhere close to Campbell or Anthony, and I’d rank him slightly behind Mayer as well

He threw 6 or more innings in 11 starts from April through June. He didn't throw more than 4 in July-Aug-Sep, and that was purposeful. That he threw 144 IP in a year when the WS were clearly babying him is actually encouraging to me. He doesn't need to be stretched out much more to hit the 165+ that seems to be the expectation for starters these days.

He was also very good as a reliever in 2021, throwing 55 IP of damn good relief. He's only 25 years old and he put up 4 WAR for the worst team in modern history this year, which is no small feat.

One good season - true. He's not prime Sale from that perspective.

But the upside is undeniable. Turns 26 next year. 209:33 K:BB ratio is insanely good.

Am I reading BRef right that he's arb-eligible going into this year and a free agent after the '27 season?

If that's the case, I'm sure his intro to the org being an arb hearing will be nice
