Same series. Another crazy play from game 3 was when Eric Byrnes came home on an infield single, Tek blocked the plate, the throw went to the backstop, Byrnes shoved Tek as he was retrieving the ball, then Tek tagged out Byrnes because he never touched the plate. Same game as the Trot walk-off. I was there. Just insane.
That's right! That had to have been one of the greatest division series of all time. It was the first playoff series for me where I actually knew what I was watching, so I don't have much of a frame of reference.

One of the best plays in Sox playoff history and it's a play that you won't probably ever really see again because of the rules change that catchers can't block the plate like that anymore.
Like the commentators said at the time, it's legal to block the plate if you're reaching for the ball. He was standing slightly in front of the plate until the moment he reached for the ball. That's still true I believe, could still happen again.

God, Eric Byrnes got a bargeful of shit from SoSH for the rest of his career after that series. Even when he proved himself pretty amiable when joining postseason broadcasts and stuff, people here were throwing shit at the TV. We HATED him. And at least half of it was this play.

That entire Oakland team was full of shitheads. Tejada, god how many obnoxious quotes did Tejada give over those couple of years? Eric Chavez. Jermaine Dye. Fucking Chad Bradford and his sideways-but-not-sideways delivery. They really were a close second on the hatred totem pole in those 2001-2004 days.

That's former Red Sox Chad Bradford, who they somehow got when they signed Jay Payton. Helped them get to the LDS where they ran into the team of destiny White Sox, which was full of equalably, if not moreso, hateable players (including Dye, who I believe was the WS MVP).

Show a little respect for an also-ran. ;)

I mean, that was half tongue in cheek. We sports-hated Bradford until he was wearing our laundry.

Though I still don't know why Jay Payton signed here if he didn't want to be a 4th outfielder. Maybe someday we'll find out.

My personal favorite and it happened during a game I was watching but turned away for a minute when the inning looked like it would last for a while. Confused coming back to a commercial break trying to figure out what happened. Val was just so casual doing what at that point only 9 other modern players had done - 15 now.

I cannot ever look at his name without my mind automatically processing it as Brad Chadford. Chad Bradford just isn't a real name.

Yeah, I love the way Val trots back to the dugout with this kind of "nothing-to-see-here-just-my-usual-greatness" vibe. Also love the announcers' confusion -- Val did it so unemphatically that they didn't digest what had happened till their second time through the replay.

That started a period of me recording every game for like 20 years, so that if something like that ever happened again, I'd have it on tape.

The Nunez ALDS play and the 10D play in the ALCS are recency bias, but because they ended their respective games, were absolutely crucial and plays I don't think they make very often.

The Pokey Reese play is amazing, so much better than Jeter's.

There are so many. Childhood favorite- Ned Martin on radio......OCt. 1st 1967......"It's looped toward shortstop,Petrocelli's back, he's got it the Red Sox win!!!!!! And there's pandemonium on the field" Mel Parnell did the TV call because Ken C. Was in the locker room. Then I like Derek Lowe striking out Terrence Long to end 03 ALDS. I Screamed even louder then Papi's 2 big hits in 04 Game 4 alcs, and game 5. And Brunansky's catch is behind those. At first Gary Thorne on ESPN said......."He drawped the ball, he drawped the ball.....No he has it" Man I was nervous for 5 to 10 seconds. My Dad called me and said "They're so lucky," lol. Hey lucks part of the game. Great end to one of my favorite Red Sox seasons and one of my favorite teams. Tartabull's throw to Howard at the plate was the most stunning.

I just watched this... man... Kimbrell!!!!! WTF happened to him???!??!?! He just turned into garbage! That was stressful... .I think my shingles are back!
Never mind that. 10D was toatally fucked by the worst umpire in MLB history with the bases loaded in the 8th.

I will never understand why Payton signed here. This play should have shown him he wasn't welcome:

I swear Sean McDonough sounded like Ned Martin at first. Younger obviously. Funny Jefferson and Hasselman joined the Sox the next year I believe. Was that Bob Montgomery doing color? I don't think it was Remy.
100% Monty. He was a part timer into the 90s, primarily doing WSBK telecasts while Remy did the NESN ones (and some WSBK).
