About time.. Wonder what other shoes will drop, especially since we need to make 40 man moves for FA signings "announced" last month

Is this in addition to the 1 year 17.5 they just signed, or does this override it?

I've been quiet on this front because I'm ambivalent to this process. I get not wanting to give out long term contracts, and I sympathize with those who hate seeing "our guys" leave. My heart says I'm glad Raffy is potentially here for the rest of his career, but my head and my gut says there is a going to be a lot of dead weight at the end of this contract. I also can't wait for everyone who has complained about how cheap the FO is bemoaning this deal as soon as it suits them.

Way to go, Chaim!

11/311 for AAV purposes then? 28.27AAV

The deal runs through the 2034 season, when he'll turn 38 at the expiration of the deal (late October).

Thank God. Even if his defense worsens he can hit enough to be a Big Papi type presence at DH.

Well I just went six to midnight. Legit shocked but happy. Way to go Raffy.

Also Carlos Baerga breaking this??? Wtf. Is there some kind of connection between him and Devers?

Of course there’s some minor concern but I’m fucking thrilled. Let’s build a dynasty around this guy.

Awesome.

I guess the offseason wasn't over and Bloom knew what he was doing.

Agreed. This takes him through his age 38 season, and I think he is the kind of guy who is going to be helped by the shift ban, too. Glad they got this done, I think he is in for an absolute monster 2023 season, and will be awesome for at least 2/3 of the contract.

Dang. Now we have to wait seven or eight years before we can fuss about their incompetence regarding the Marcelo Mayer extension.

A 2024 infield of Casas/Story/Mayer/Devers has me absolutely giddy, and an outfield of Verdugo/Rafaela/Yoshida isn't helping to make me less giddy..

Very happy to be wrong about this one. Knew it was going to be well over $300M and didnt think they would go the years and money, but something they absolutely needed to do.

My theory always was that Devers was never going to take anything under a deal he could get on the market, and this seems about like a market-level deal, so makes sense to me.

Happy the Sox got this done, honestly was not expecting it.

Relieved they locked up at least one of Mookie, Xander, and Raffy. Now they'll be judged if they picked correctly.

I think it is through his age 37 season. Curious about opt outs.

And, point of reference, Ortiz put up this line for the Sox during his 37 year old season: .309/.395/.564 with 30 homers.

Hard to imagine Devers as a likely 400M+ guy in the off-season (though you never know…) so probably not the “discount” Chaim wanted to get by offering the deal a year early. A lot of bad stuff can happen in 12 months.

Having said that, given everything this off-season they probably didn’t have much choice here. I’m glad they decided to get it done rather than haggle over a couple million AAV and a couple years at the back end.

I think this is a good contract. It’s a LOT of money, obviously, but he’s coming into his prime as a hitter and can move into a DH spot when the time comes. Maybe Bloom and co have a plan?

I was told yesterday that Henry decided not to spend money, guess Bloom didn't get the memo

This is fantastic news. If you aren't going to retain your young homegrown guys with hitting profiles like his what the fuck are you even doing? Glad they got it done and that looks like a fair contract both ways. I remain very high on his bat going forward so if he stays healthy even the back end might not be too ugly.

Great job getting this done. Might he be bad by the end of the deal? Certainly likely, but hopefully we see OUR guy slug away for the next 8-10 seasons at Fenway. It will be a pleasure and a joy to watch him do it.

Yeah, from Devers' POV he must have gotten close to what he wanted in FA and/or is aware of the risks of his health or performance falling off. Which would be unusual. Seems like a lot of guys assume they will just play at their peak and be paid accordingly. Or he just wanted to stay in Boston.

I still have to wonder how much more annually it cost them waiting till now. This time last summer what would the market value have looked like? Still though 30 annually vs 40 for Judge, when you consider age and injuries It looks like a no braine.

I’m pleasantly surprised. I just didn’t think they wanted to invest $300 million in one individual player.

Awesome. I think we might overrated Devers a tad as a player but I have a feeling it won't take even three years until this contract looks mighty reasonable for the production he provides this team.
