In addition per Rosenthal. Is this in addition to the 1 year 17.5 they just signed, or does this override it?
In addition. Willing to be it was planned this way, as the team wants to stay under the Tax threshold this year pretty badly, I think. Is this in addition to the 1 year 17.5 they just signed, or does this override it?
Yup. I’m happy. This absolutely needed to get done.Of course there’s some minor concern but I’m fucking thrilled. Let’s build a dynasty around this guy.
This is the main point. If the hit tool remains special, 28M AAV is fine for a top-tier DH still.Thank God. Even if his defense worsens he can hit enough to be a Big Papi type presence at DH.
Agreed. This takes him through his age 38 season, and I think he is the kind of guy who is going to be helped by the shift ban, too. Glad they got this done, I think he is in for an absolute monster 2023 season, and will be awesome for at least 2/3 of the contract.Thank God. Even if his defense worsens he can hit enough to be a Big Papi type presence at DH.
Now he can trade himCheapo Bloom once again trying to show how clever he is. Woohoo!
A 2024 infield of Casas/Story/Mayer/Devers has me absolutely giddy, and an outfield of Verdugo/Rafaela/Yoshida isn't helping to make me less giddy..Dang. Now we have to wait seven or eight years before we can fuss about their incompetence regarding the Marcelo Mayer extension.
I think it is through his age 37 season. Curious about opt outs.Agreed. This takes him through his age 38 season, and I think he is the kind of guy who is going to be helped by the shift ban, too. Me too. Imagine paying nearly the same for Bogaerts four-plus years older. Now he can trade him
Thrilled. In Chaim I continue to trust
Yeah, from Devers' POV he must have gotten close to what he wanted in FA and/or is aware of the risks of his health or performance falling off. Which would be unusual. Seems like a lot of guys assume they will just play at their peak and be paid accordingly. Or he just wanted to stay in Boston.Hard to imagine Devers as a likely 400M+ guy in the off-season (though you never know…) so probably not the “discount” Chaim wanted to get by offering the deal a year early. A lot of bad stuff can happen in 12 months.
Having said that, given everything this off-season they probably didn’t have much choice here. I’m glad they decided to get it done rather than haggle over a couple million AAV and a couple years at the back end.
Ha ha. Lol. I was thinking about that too. That fans sign at the Winter Classic worked!
This is why he is so valuable and a MUST sign. It's a much better contract for the Sox than X's in SD.Thank God. Even if his defense worsens he can hit enough to be a Big Papi type presence at DH.
