We could use a thread like there is in the C's forum that shows gifs or videos of the top defensive plays made by the Sox.

This is a great idea. I'd love to see some Iggy Gifs.

Apologies to those whose names I can't remember who had the foresight to make these at the time:

A Ryan Kalish catch, although he didn't nail the dismount:

The original F*ck Yeah, following the diving backhand stop that preserved Buchholz' 2007 no-hitter:

Edit: Couldn't find one so I made one.  I'm gonna try to put one that is a little longer together.

There's a Coco Crisp catch where the camera was showing the left center gap and he just came flying in to the shot to make a diving catch. Unfortunately, I can't remember the game or year. I realize he made a bunch of those, but can anyone shed some light?

The catch from the gif above was from June 29th, 2006.  I think they one you're talking about is a different game, though.  He did have a bunch of incredible catches.

Yeah, I remember it specifically because the camera wasn't tracking him at all before he flew in like Superman.

I believe you're talking about a catch he made in Texas during the opening series of 2006, no? That was the "catch Coco made", which was funny because it was in all the NESN promos, and Coco was DL'ed for a good portion of it.

edit -

It's here, and it was from opening day:

but I'm guessing the link doesn't work, and MLB doesn't allow anything on Youtube so I'm not sure if it exists anywhere anymore (I can't get it to load).

Any idea why I can't see these?  Using FF 19.

No idea.  I can see them with both Chrome and Safari.

Edit: Maybe it's the hosting?  I threw them up on photobucket.

Thanks, Safari on my iPhone worked.

The game was on June 19, 2007 at Atlanta (http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/multimedia/tp_archive.jsp?c_id=bos&ym=200706). Just fucking insane catch.

Also, for posterity, we have to have the Manny climb the wall and high-five the fan catch.

That's an awesome cache of video, that 2007 season is. There's another Crisp catch that same month, a Willie Mays-esque over-the-shoulder basket grab, that's almost as good in its way.

And I just took another look at the F Yeah! play. It's good to see the whole thing occasionally and remind oneself of just how insane it was. Pedroia's come close many times over the ensuing years, but never quite matched that one. Best part of the clip, though, is Tejada's "getthefukkouttahere" gesture at Pedroia after he gets up from the headfirst slide.

The defensive ones I have are already posted, but how about two of the nastiest pitches ever.

I'm trying to find more. I wish he could be up long enough to turn this into a Jose Iglesias gif thread. That video of him and Starlin Castro taking grounders had a few gif-worthy moments if anyone knows how to make it into one (I don't).

That clip of Iggy starting the DP is....jazz. It's like watching Art Blakey or Max Roach play the drums.

It occurs to me to wonder: is Iglesias/Pedroia the best defensive keystone combination the Sox have ever had? Might be the best in my years watching them at any rate.

Sorry, didn't realize you wanted a gif made out of that.  Here are two different angles.  Sorry about the media player tool bar being in the gif early on.  It won't fade quickly enough to avoid being captured by the screen capture software.

And the second angle.

TGG, while that twirl is neat, it's not in game action so I'm not sure it quite fits with the rest of the gifs.  He is ridiculously smooth, though.

Anyone have a better hosting solution than photobucket?  They seem to limit you to 4mb or less which forces me to make really small gifs like the last one.

Edit: I tried imageshack and flickr, but neither seemed any better.

Speaking of nasty pitches, I wouldn't mind seeing Derek Lowe's strike three to end the 2003 ALDS, if possible. That got me whooping out of my chair like it had an ejector seat on it!

I was a little overzealous in "a few". Not even sure if it's gif-worthy or not, but god damn, he's slick. First ground ball.
I could barely follow the glove-hand transfer. It was literally a blur.

I hope he can generate enough OBP to stay up. He's a delight to watch. Skills like that add a dimension of pleasure to watching baseball that goes beyond standard fandom.

Pedroia-Gonzalez was the best Red Sox pivot combination I ever saw, and Iglesias has greater quickness, range and flair than Seabass.

Me too. I was in the air before the ball even reached the plate because you knew it was going to tail into the strike zone.

Can someone post the most ridiculous defensive play EVER? You know the one...the one where Manny cuts off Damon's throw?

Fitting that it is the greatest defensive play in Manny's Red Sox career. Yes, there's the catch and high five, but that's more style than substance.

Iglesias again. That force out at second tonight with a presumably numb elbow? I'm going to run out of things to say if this keeps up.

That should be your starting shortstop all season long. Anything he gives you with the bat is a bonus. The glove is just that good.

I'm not anti-Drew but I think they need to play Drew for 2-3 weeks to prove his worth and then trade him and get Iggy out there everyday. His glove is amazing.

That was a tough catch going straight back AND you left out doubling off the runner AND it was Millar that he robbed. Plenty of substance there.

Krista Lackey just PMd me to ask if someone can post a slow-motion GIF of her ex-husband wincing in agony.

I particularly like that he's doing the Jeter "jumping spin-and-throw" move, except actually getting some velocity on it and putting it right in the chest of the 1B.

My GIF requests would be some longshots and old memories...

- Manny robbing Miguel Cairo in the toilet, when the latter just assumed it was a home run and completed his whole trot before being told he was out
- The Pokey play from June 1st 2004
- Didn't Trot Nixon make some spectacular save in the late innings of the Pedro-Clemens showdown in 2000?

I remember some ridiculous Youk hustle plays from the past few seasons (wasn't there a big collision in foul territory in RF?) but can't pinpoint enough details of them to be specific.

Slightly larger version of Manny cutting off Johnny Damon. As a youtube comment put it, "this play had me wondering why dogs chase cars."
