41 degrees on opening day?
You be grateful

Whatever moron decided to put opening day in March in New England should be tarred and feathered and fried in avocado oil
There's no guarantee that 3 days later will be any warmer.

Edit: I know they could start on a roadtrip. But there's a lot of teams in the north. Some of them have to host.

Cleveland, Detroit, Yankees, Mets, Cubs, White Sox, Twins, Phillies, Rockies and Red Sox that’s it.
Maybe Reds

(Brewers and Blue Jays are in a controlled climate)

that’s still less than 1/2

Actually, looking at the schedule, I don't know why this series couldn't be played in Baltimore.
Because neither team wants to host Opening Day, because that means you are likely home for at least six games (two series) and although the first game will sell well, the others won’t. Every team wants more home games later in the season. And every team can’t get that so they switch off.

Also a lot of teams don't want the Yankees or Red Sox as their Opening Day opponents because those teams draw good attendance most games so they'd rather have the good attendance for Opening Day against another team.

Weather is just an unpredictable thing in general. The Phils open in Texas, but it was in the high 60s a couple of days ago in Philly (when we all thought our water might be poisoned), and the high here today is 48 with temperatires for most of the day in the 30s. Tomorrow it's expected to be 64 and Saturday's high is expected to be 71. It's the time of year when the only sure thing about the weather is such wild swings in temperature. But I understand that most of us are doing all we can to ensure that warmer temperatures can be expected everywhere in the years to come, so feel free to take what comfort you can in that. That's a good point actually. We're going to see 2010 very rarely if ever again. (Fenway opening to Yankees off a WS win for them) lol. (Although MLB does the schedule before previous season is over)

NBA doesn't seem to follow this strategy though. Kinda wish they did.

The NBA is so much more of a national sport though. Celtics-Bucks or Philly or whatever will draw a ton of national eyeballs as opposed to some lousy team. Baseball doesn’t draw nearly the national audience.

As soon as I saw they installed the led lights I fucking knew they'd use them for that. Sucks for those people who are prone to seizures and migraines I guess.

I was just thinking the way to stop this shit quick is a seizure complaint or some other medically induced issue from them. This was at twilight, it’s going to look shittier when it’s a night game. I think they need to come up with a better way to use them than that light show.

Yeah I hate it. If you have to make your lights do the fucking wave, stick to turning off one bank at a time. Watching the players enjoy the moment is exciting, half the field going dark isn't.

The dumb light show was awful during the World Baseball Classic and it's even worse at Fenway Park. Get outta here with that bush league trash. This ain't Altoona or Pawtucket...er, Worcester.

I have two thoughts with the lights.

1. The experience in the stands was remarkably different than that of the TV viewer (and is now yet another example of a wide divergence between the two viewing experiences). In the stands, people were just going nuts and this visual change just added to the excitement similar to the auditory experience we appreciate with Dirty Water. I don’t want to like this, but in the moment I did. When I saw it on replay at home, it looked hokey.

So - experience it once in the stands before you trash it. Now admittedly, the newness and unexpectedness of this can’t be duplicated and this may surely fade as it becomes more common.

2. Duvall was at second when they played with the lights and tying run hadn’t even touched. Way too soon. Let the game be official.

From the stands my take was the lights blinking thing took away from seeing Duvall run happily and the other players react and move. It didn't add anything, was distracting, and just looked silly.
The lights turned on while we were at the park early, and I could immediately see a difference in the quality of light. It did look different to my eyes, a little cooler and blue toned. Not good/bad but just different, same as when I changed the living room lights to LED bulbs.

Would it look better if they changed light colors instead of turning them on and off?

The push back on this feels a little odd to me, even as an older fart, because they’ve been doing this stuff in basketball and hockey arenas for years.

Isn't this something that's been happening following goals at the Garden for years? Maybe I'm misremembering. I think it's dumb but my understanding was it's basically the way of stadiums now.

I'm sort of getting a strip club vibe from the locker room changes. Maybe the 20-something ballplayers love it. It seems kind of wanting to be classy but actually trashy though.

The crowd reaction last night to the Duvall HR was awesome - the blinking lights were fine. I was behind the dugout and seeing Duvall round second with the lights flashing was cool.
But then I noticed a couple of Orioles not leaving the field and the umps were calling for a review. It would have really sucked if that had been reversed.

My avatar is very suitable for this topic, because this light show is absoltely fucking atrocious. I equate it to moving from the original Caddyshack golf course with warts and all, now we have to amp it up a la Caddyshack 2. Mini golf is fun!!

The food at Fenway is bad.

It was better in 2019, but even then it pales in comparison to other parks around the country. What little variety they have is typically only offered at one or two locations.

At hockey games, it's spotlights hitting the ice and circling around. So there is a light show component, but it doesn't involve the rest of the lights going dark so you can't see what's happening (or start thinking your TV is on the fritz).

For those of you staring at your phones: NOW IT IS TIME TO LOUDLY REJOICE!

These lights... I made a fuss about it during the winter and was told it wouldn't be a big deal.

Look at this bullshit: on a basic production level, this is so profoundly bad. A surprising, exciting moment that you literally cannot see because someone is pushing the "BE EXCITED" button.

The production drowns out the actual action as Fenway mimics your local minor league hockey game.

Seriously- what did this add to the experience of watching this game? I am amazed that it was allowed to happen.

Look I don't know what Avatar 2 matinee crap y'all were expecting, but Apocalypse Now is a masterpiece and its climax is one of the defining moments in cinema. Iconic.

I was at the game and the effect was pretty cool, it sort of mimicked the end of the The Natural, though I'm not sure if that was intentional or not. The crowd was already going wild, and the lighting bolstered that, similar to a fireworks display. My 17-year old daughter was jumping up and down and taking it all in. She was already a baseball fan, but this certainly cemented that, which I suspect is the point.

Live a little, people. Christ.

Jumping up and down at a baseball game?!? What kind of kid are you raising? Did you at least have your top coat and bowler hat on to set a proper example and live up to the expectations of this board?

I liked the lights.

But I'm also not someone who's hung on on the Purity of the Baseball Experience at Fenway (tm).

Life is short. Lighten up (no pun intended).

"live a little" and "lighten up" irk me a bit. Most of the people here are saying the lights detracted from their enjoyment of a great, memorable moment. That seems like a fair criticism, why are you trying to invalidate it?

SoSH is historically resistant to most ballpark changes. I've posted here for two decades and, for the most part, every new thing introduced at Fenway is immediately dismissed or attacked. Meanwhile, those who were actually at the park on Saturday have said the lights were a cool addition.

Yes. This board has a long history of tut tutting most things that aren't quiet appreciation for the finer points of the game. Billboards are garish, speakers are too loud, patches on the uniforms are a disgrace, and now the light show didn't allow viewers at home to see whether Duvall touched second base, and I'm sure if the Sox added home run fireworks we'd hear about all the poor dogs in the neighborhood traumatized by such foolishness.
