Dude is really boom or bust as far as hitting--6 years of OPS+ under 95, 4 years over 120, only 2 in between.

Wow. Got a hitter who can really improve the numbers vs LHP, and is cheap, too.

Sort of replacing Hanley, but if Hanley were actually able to play a credible LF.

DD announced him as a 1B/OF so I assume that is how they see him though I'm sure he'll give JBJ and Benny the occasional day off vs a lefty as well.

OPS+ before age 30: 82
OPS+ age 30 & after: 121

Steve Pearcey and Brian Johnson on the same team, it's an 80's metal revival!
With the comedian Steven Wright opening the show.

Well that's a pretty damn good trade if you ask me.

23 year old guys in A ball rarely fill a need. Pearce will help.

I like the move more as a 1B platoon with Mitch, who we all know will need it (and probably needs it already), and the occasional outfield spot start. So DD saying 1B/OF is good.

You wonder if Espinal was a guy who just blossomed at 23, or if Dombrowski is selling high on a guy having the best season he’ll ever have, still at A-ball.

This job was Sam Travis’ for the taking and he couldn’t take it.

Pearce could be a very good fit.

He's never repeated a league and has shown year over year growth so there's that going for him. This is the first year he's hit for any type of power though. As a 23 year old in Salem, that's not too surprising either though. He may make it as a UI.

Is Swihart going to stay on the team? Wouldn’t it be nice to keep Lin so he could shake nerves?

Smells nice down here in the bottom of this dumpster. Add him and Phillips and that might be a more professional bench. Maybe package Swihart for a decent but cheap bullpen guy? Hope it works.

Great trade. Pearce has seemed like a logical fit replacement for Hanley’s since before his DFA. Glad DD didn’t have to wait until 7/31 and I hope the cash is minimal.

I'd be surprised if he gets here that soon. Not impossible but I'm going to guess Saturday at the earliest.
the Blue Jays had a day off today, returning from a west coast swing. Clearly the move was done during / just before the game. I could see a flight to NYY pretty easily...

Yeah, I think July is spent finding the best lefty reliever Swihart can bring.

I mean, I'd rather play him, but if they aren't doing it now, they won't be doing it a month from now.

Lots of years in the division and Bref says 205 PAs against the Sox, but I don’t remember too much about him at all. Not a lead pipe guy against us.

If asked the first thing that came to mind I’d say patient hitter who is slow to get down the line. Turns out he has walked a lot against us, and he does have 50 BBs/162 games, so decent eye. But about a 4.00 P/PA, so not exactly “patient”.

He really hasn’t left much of an impression. Hits lefties. Good enough for me.

wRC+ vs. LHP since 2016 (min. 200 PAs)

5. Martinez - 170
21. Betts - 145
42. Pearce - 135

No negative to this trade. Swihart has no options so if we can get any kind of anything that helps I’m in. He’s not going to turn into a Josh Reddick.

Great trade. Dude can fill in at 1B, LF, and DH and hits lefties well.

Helps keep everyone rested, make sure Moreland doesn't get overexposed, and helps address a relative weakness vs LHP. No reason not to like it.

I hope you're right. Would love to see him tomorrow. But It seems like in this day and age guys are being given more time to report, so they can get their personal stuff in order. We'll see.

Speier tweeted that Pearce has faced CC more than any other pitcher (.849 OPS). I bet he hops on the plane tomorrow.

Like the move. A definite move to rest Mitch but I might be a minority view for saying this but also a move to protect themselves from a JBJ funk. But anyways a nice move to rest Mitch with a similar productive bat vs lefties that Mitch is vs righties. That is very sweet. At 35 yo he's not taking away anyone's position. Just a nice bench pickup.
