If the Sox win the WS with Pomeranz being the difference maker than obviously the trade is great.

Just not sure if Pomeranz moves the needle enough to give up a guy like Espinoza.

Would have preferred a lesser deal for #4 or #5 and try to ride the offense.

Yeah, I'm fine with dealing away Espinoza, but I probably would have preferred to hang on to him until the offseason when maybe some more impactful players may be available (Gerrit Cole?)
They have the best offense in the AL this year. They needed another starter right now. They gave up quality to get quality. Sign me up in favor of this deal. Who knows what happens next year?

If this is straight-up its dealable.
Sox needed a 3-4 guy now.
We'll moan about Espy in 2021 when he's painting at 98.
I blame Clay Buchholz for putting DD into this position.

Don't like Pomeranz that much, but I'm fine with this. There is a decent chance Espinoza never even gets to the majors. We might be in the same position this offseason though, Pomeranz' walk rate is too high for my taste.
Heading in the right direction at the very least. Given the changes discussed in the earlier linked fangraphs articles thats very promising.

On the other hand. While I don't like the deal is there a better GM to trade prospects than DD? I can't really remember him trading any prospects in his career that has bit him in the ass. I don't know...maybe Hoffman?

They could of got him for Margot but our idiot GM traded 3 prospects for a reliever last year. What a joke.
This post is a joke.

3 mediocre prospects (the centerpiece of which was very blocked) for one of the best relievers in the majors on a team that desperately needed bullpen help.

One starting prospect that, yes, has a ton of potential but is at the very least 4 (and realistically 5) years out to fill a HUGE gaping hole on a competitive major-league squad with a guy that's 7th in the majors in ERA+. If Espinoza ever makes it, and that's still a very large if, it wouldn't be until most of the current roster is turned over.

This is a good trade, and I absolutely love DD's aggressiveness in identifying and solidifying weaknesses on the major-league squad while avoiding trading his top and most valued pieces (in the past calendar year, those would be Mookie, Xander, Moncada, and Benintendi.)

Padres GM AJ Preller continues his blue print of trading successful veterans for quality over quantity without concern of how far players might be from Major Leagues. Another strong long term deal for Padres. For the Red Sox a much needed starter that is a huge up-grade over their present 4th and 5th starters. However, it comes with risk not knowing how Pomeranz will pitch when he gets to 150 IP level. A definite over pay for Red Sox that was needed because of low supply and high demand of starting pitchers on the market.

Getting worse. They already have a fire Dombrowski thread and it's like a morgue over there.
In the few times I've ventured over there, I've gotten the impression that if they traded Sean Coyle straight up for Mike Trout, there would be folks there who would be apoplectic about it.

Again I'll ask this since most are irrationally freaking out. How is this a bad trade? You give up Espinoza for a known commodity in Pomeranz with 2.5 seasons of control AND replace that hole in the system with a pitcher who was a candidate to go 1/1 and is the same age.

Basically gave up a young power pitching prospect for a cost controlled mid 2 era starter on the same day we signed the lefty version of Espinoza. Can't get quality without giving up something.

Margot is rated anywhere from 20-50 in all publications and Logan Allen has been great this year. Mediocre?

Maybe a dumb question but have any of you watch this Pomeranz guy pitch? How good is he? Is he the number 2 starter?
I've seen a start and change of his; I remember he had two consecutive tough-luck losses against the Giants, losing 1-0 and 2-1 to two consecutive Cueto complete games. Takeaway: he throws a ton of curveballs, and doesn't give up much in the way of hard contact.

He has a pretty low BABIP, but I'd guess he's pretty much "earned" it, if that's possible. I think our outfield defense will help him: remember he's pitching in front of Matt Kemp and company in a spacious park.

He has a low 90's fastball that he throws at a really interesting angle, he's really good at getting it in on righties and they don't seem to pick it up well.

Had a huge over top curve and has developed a cutter/slider that really helps him against right handers.

The stuff certainly isn't "back of the rotation" stuff. He's very very good.

Not here
The reasons I'm not puking:

It's just one guy.
That guy is far from the majors.
TINSTAAPP.
He's here past 2016.

The reasons I might be soon:

I'm not sold on Pomeranz being a difference maker.

There's nothing left but to win the whole damn thing.

Works to me. Pomeranz was a well regarded prospect who looks to be putting it together now that he has added a cutter. His FIP and xFIP might not be mid-2's but low to mid 3's is nothing to scoff at. His K rate is legit. He is under control for 2017 and 2018.

Espinoza has a fantastic ceiling but he has struggled a bit to display control in high A and it is a long way to the bigs yet for him. This club is poised to win now and over the next few seasons, this move maximizes that possibility when the FA pitching market has pretty sparse options for the off-season. You have to give to get and the Sox are better off by getting a younger guy with multiple years of control

My only concern is that the club is very left handed at this point in a division with some strong RHB lineups to compete against.

It's a fine trade but signing Groome doesn't make it any better or worse. They're signing Groome either way.
It's Pomeranz + Groome vs Espinoza and Groome.

Margot is hitting at a .771 OPS in AAA and Allen is a 19 year old with decent but not overpowering (3.07 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, under 9 K/9) numbers in A-ball.

Got Cardinalsed by the same team in less than a year

Best pitching prospect, top 20 overall

Ya know, when I first read the news and came in here, I was really on the fence on how to feel, Espinoza was definitely a gut punch to read. Thank you both (among others) for helping me cement my opinion as firmly in favor of the trade.

I don't like this trade either. That said, I saw Pomeranz pitch in person against the Yankees two weeks ago here in SD. He looked great and had the Yankees off balance all game. His curveball was pretty dominant that night.

I'm not a fan. But, as I mentioned before can anyone tell me what prospect DD has traded that's come back to bite him in the ass? I can't really think of any.

What Groome is as a prospect has nothing to do with Espinoza. And the pitching hole in the system is as wide as its ever been, with now only a meathead standing between the GCL and Fenway.

This is terrible news for anyone who hoped to see a bona-fide starter developed and club controlled for his prime. The Sox had a pitching prospect on the level of Uriah and Giolito, and he just got traded for a well-traveled journeyman enjoying a career year.

Whoever blamed Buchholz is spot on, and I'd like to add Kelly to the sneer list.

Considering the rumored costs for Teheran, I'm actually stunned he got Pomeranz for one piece, albeit a big one.

If EdRo can just be a 6IP, 4ER type they should be done. If he gets lit up, they might still pursue someone like Hill (who could also be a LH set up man in the postseason).

Get Kimbrel, Taz and Young healthy and we are in pretty good shape.

Question is, is that bc DD has a special eye for talent...or is it just bc almost all prospects are low odds to become bona fide studs

He's actually in Low A, not High A.

I imagine some Padres fans are lost as to how the best deal their GM could get for one of the few arms on the market was a guy in Low A with a 4.38 ERA and not terribly impressive peripherals (for a guy with supposedly electric stuff).

I am disappointed at losing Espinoza as he's such a fun guy to dream on. But I think half the people in this thread have never seen Pomeranz pitch - he's really good. Given the flameout rate for pitchers, I'm okay with taking the guy who is pitching great in MLB now (and we have him for 2.5yrs) for the guy who might pitch great in MLB in 2019-20.

Not saying anything about Pomeranz either way, but plenty of pitchers have looked dominant against NY this year, good ones, mediocre ones, awful ones. Tyler Duffey and Miguel Gonzalez had similar lines against NY the same week as the Pomeranz game.

The good thing about having a mediocre rotation is its only five guys, so its easy to get better in a hurry. Top 4 starters now have ERA+ of 104, 169, 123, and 161. The guy they replaced in the rotation is one of the worst pitchers in baseball. So thats nice.

And to this point I will additionally note that Casey Kelley hasn't really become anything, and they probably should have traded Owens back when he was a top-20 prospect.
