I'm guessing that Alex wasn't the guy filling out the RSVP. That said I'm looking forward to Cora discussing Puerto Rico with POTUS.
Cora seems like the kind of guy that will use this to bring publicity to something important to him.

Eh, I wouldn't love the idea of the ownership or coach making a unilateral decision not to go. Allow individual players to make that decision if they choose, but don't impose it on them.

I've never liked the practice of having championship winning teams going to the WH and was hoping that Trump would be the permanent end of it. But I guess not.

That's where I'm at. This does not preclude individual players from making their own decisions and/or statements.

Yeah, there's a good argument to be made for the team making the decision to go, because it's probably less divisive for individual players to take a pass when the team has said yes than for individual players to go on their own when the team has said no. I get that, but I still wish they had taken the less smooth path here.

Sometimes I wish the U.S. had a ceremonial head of state with no real political power. Not a king or queen, but like Israel’s president.

Who the President is shouldn’t matter. It’s the White House that counts. Look at the Bush ceremony today in the Capitol. Very powerful. You honor the man. You honor the team.

It's basically a photo-op for the President. Not really even something celebrating the winning team.

Here
I’m perfectly fine with the decision. Give the players the opportunity to decide. I do not support the president politically, but I still might decide to go because of what the office means as an institution.

The U.S. has its own baseball team - when they win something, they should go to the White House. Leave the leagues out of it.

Holding out hope that they negotiate to be at the White House when the President will be away and the photo op will be with Baron and Melania.

I agree with this, but only if the first and most public person to opt out is Cora himself.

I’m glad the team accepted. Not going would be a bigger story and honestly I’m tired of that angle being part of the narrative. I don’t watch sports to find out what Draymond Green or Chris Long thinks of Donald Trump. And I don’t want the last chapter of the 2018 season to turn out like the Eagles.

Should players or people for that matter only accept invitations from people with whom their political beliefs align? Or just maybe people understand each other just a little bit better if they are in a room together.

I have no issues with the organization as a whole accepting. I also will have no issues if the org says anyone who wants out is free to do so and no one shows up.

Guess it all depends on how outside the norm you think that whole situation is. Speaking for myself, I'd gladly have the proverbial beer with W., and didn't think twice when the Sox went there when they won in the past. I would not smile and shake that guy's hand though, and was hoping the Red Sox felt the same. Just mho.

I would probably not personally go but this seems like a Michael Jordan business decision, "Republicans buy tickets too." Of course for me personally it is not a Republican/Democrat issue, but a decency and respect issue with this particular president. If it were me I'd have no issue were it either of the Bush administrations or frankly just about any other Repub.

On the one hand I feel the ownership group is taking the easy path and staying out of the right's wrath, but on the other hand the team personnel consists of grown-ass men and women who don't need the decision made for them and I'm glad in that respect the Sox are not turning the invite down out of hand.

Are the Sox going to present POTUS with an honorary 45 jersey or will they slip him a 38? Or neither?

Many of the players have strong views. Some of these views have already leaked; JD Martinez is a strong gun advocate, for instance. Accepting, and letting players opt out, rather than not accepting and having players fight to go is a better situation.

In saying that I hope almost every single one of them stay home.

Goddammit I came here to say exactly this.

There is only one name that belongs on the back of a 45 jersey, and it is not Trump's. It better be a home jersey with no name across the shoulders.

It's a retired number for goodness sake.

If they present the #45 I hope Pedro then runs out from the side and throws #45 down a la Zimmer. Then the camera cuts to Tim McCarver who is somehow in the media crowd, clutching his pearls with a quivering upper lip.

Disgusted by this. I guess at least that moron Hembree will be pumped to meet 45. Still a likeable team but not really a likeable ownership. Do not add legitimacy to an illegitimate president.

The fact that they will even have a 45 jersey with this asshole on it makes me sick. They need to apologize to Pedro

This reflects how I feel about it.
