Recommend me a 55-65 inch TV

My brother and I are both in the market for newer, larger TV sets to replace our aging 40-inch-ish models. We both use the sets mostly for viewing shows off broadcast or cable; we game a bit, but not the sort of games that require ultra-fast response. We'd like to get something larger, in the 55-65 inch range; and, though neither of us watches and 4K content now, we're thinking it might be good to acquire a device which can handle it for the future.

Budget is somewhat flexible, but we don't want to go much over $1000, if that. StupendousBro has been considering the Sony XBR-65 X930E, but has an open mind.

Any suggestions? We both know about AVS Forum, so we can do detailed reading there as needed.

Go OLED and you'll never go back! LGs are ridiculously on sale right now. I agree with Joe, rtings is a fantastic site! I did all of my research there before I bought by EF9500. A 65" is going to be a little pricey but you won't regret it.

I have a TCL P Series and it is a tremendous value at $600 for the 55 inch. For a 65 inch model the Vizio M Series is probably the best TV in your Price range.

If you are willing to spend $1500+ I would think it makes sense to get an OLED. I'm not really sure how brands like Sony and Samsung are competing at this point. They both make a great product, but they aren't enough better than what TCL and Vizio produce to justify paying two to three times as much and they are sufficiently inferior to LG OLEDs that if you are buying in their price range, you might as well buy the LG.

This man speaks the truth, do it.
I almost wish I needed a new TV so I could buy one

I hate curved TVs and don’t see the appeal of them. Sony discontinued theirs, LG did as well. I really don’t like anything the distorts the screen or “improves” it via gimmicky software so I’m out on curved TVs. Plus if you wall mount them they look awkward.

I had to replace my old 65” Mitsu DLP back in February and went with the Sony XBR 930. Very happy with it. My older setup ran everything through my AV receiver using HDMI 1.3 — to handle the new 4K Apple TV I replaced my receiver and bought HDMI cables rated for 2.0

Apple auto-upgrades purchased movies to 4K when available. Atomic Blonde in 4K is awesome.

There’s also a ton of 4K content on YouTube that the TV can play natively - amazing nature videos and such. Very cool.

Hi folks,

I finally made it back to the USA and am in the same market and budget.
Is the LG OLED still the white whale? Is it worth the money to get the 65 incher?
I will be watching NBA and a shitload of Pixar/fantasy stuff with the kids. Thanks in advance....

I bought the 55 inch LG OLED a month or two ago. One of the best purchases I've ever made. It's THE perfect TV/price combo. Picture is fantastic. Interface is fantastic.

55 inch or 65 inch is all up to you. I believe the TV is identical other than the size. I was toying with the 65 inch for a bit, but ended up being pretty happy with 55. 55 Inches is actually still pretty damn big.

Edit: Got the 55" for $1575 from clevelandplasma.com - This being the best reviewed reseller I've seen on the 'net.

If you got the money to spare the OLED is definitely a nice step up you won't regret.

Personally that's a little out of my desired price range, so I'm sort of waiting for the new TCL 6 Series models which are due out pretty soon.

I’m not sure what’s in stores right now, but I’ll offer some words of caution. Be careful about buying models a year or two old.

Some of the less recent Smart TVs lack features and app support that are now pretty standard.

Got my Samsung SmartTV last summer, and it currently doesn’t work with YouTubeTV, and a couple of other features, such as Smart Home functionality, etc...

Just got this year's LG OLED 65" TV. Absolutely amazing picture. It's pricey but worth every penny. It feels like the show is being performed in your living room. Got it from Cleveland Plasma, recommend them highly.

Just picked up a 65" OLED C8 as well for my new house, to go along with my 2017 LG OLED 55" I already owned. Could not agree more. These are amazing TV's. I am putting a 120" screen and 4k projector in the finished basement, and I am already starting to wonder if I shouldn't have just bought another 65" LG OLED, just because they are so great.

Bumping this old thread, since my TV just died. I have a 49” LG LED TV in my living room. Since I am not going to fix it, I won’t get into the details into what went wrong with it, but it’s dead.

Anyway, where the TV is has sort of limited space. Width is not really an issue, but the height is. So I am not sure what size I can fit. I do know that the old TV fit with about 3 horizontal inches to spare. Oh, and the TV is mounted to the wall sort of in a corner with a full motion wall mount, with articulating arm.

So I need a new LED TV. I think I can fit a 55” TV in the space, but need to verify the measurement. While staying away from LG, what particular brand would you recommend. Note that I although I can afford to, I would rather not spend a boatload of $$ on a new TV. It does get used a lot, but we are not picture quality geeks. So something decent that doesn’t break the bank.

We are pretty happy with this

Sony XBR55X700D 55-Inch 4K Ultra HD Smart LED TV

We got it on prime day last year so the price was $499 I think. But good bang for the buck IMO.

Edit: amazon link won't work for some weird reason? Chopping it up a bit so you can use the link below, or just google the model number I listed.

I’m looking for hopefully a 65” for cheap (~$700). Are the Best Buy/Walmart options worth considering? What features should I be looking at? We don’t do any gaming and only limited movies. Lots of sports and binging Netflix. We don’t have cable and use YouTube TV for what it’s worth.

TCL 65" is $600 at Best Buy. Built in Roku, works great with YouTube TV and Netflix. I have the 55" version in my basement and use it with those 2 services. Definitely the best TV in that price range.

Is that the S405 version? Any idea what the extra $350 gets me from the S405 to the R615?

Went with the Vizio E series 65” based on the RTINGS site. $729 at Best Buy. I was in for going P series 55” or TCL 6 series but the wife didn’t want to get up near $1k and she thought she’d rather have 65” over 55” for the same price even if losing a bit of quality. Hopefully it works out!

I just purchased the 65" LG E8 for $2,300. Amazon currently list it for $3,500. I used Greentoe.com. They have you suggest a price for the item and then go out and see if any of their vendors are willing to part with the item at that price. I saw that someone on slickdeals got this TV for $2,300. I put in an asking price of $2,250 and quickly received a counter offer at $2,300 which I accepted. I've never used them before, but saw enough positive experiences on slickdeals to give them a try.

Below is my affiliate link to Greentoe. If you click this and end up purchasing something I will get some money back. Go directly to greentoe.com if you don't want to use my affiliate link.

I saw someone link to Greentoe before - can you comment on the experience. Was it basically like ordering a TV from amazon once you settled on the price, it just shows up at your front door?

(And especially if anyone else is reading this that used greentoe and sadly had to make a warranty claim, any issues? I know they say it's all certified retailers, but some brands can be really picky on "authorized" retailers and warranties. But saving $1200-1300 is a pretty big deal.)

The process was very simple. I made an offer and told Greentoe how long I was willing to wait for them to find a retailer willing to accept my price. Within a day I received a counterproposal which I accepted. I then received a receipt directly from the retailer and tracking information. The TV would have arrived about a week later, but I have been travelling and no one has been available to sign for the shipment so I have it held at FedEx until I return.

The retailer who accepted my offer is listed on LGs website as an authorized dealer so I don't anticipate any issues with warranties.

I bought the 55' LG OLED thanks to this thread and I love it. The only thing lacking is a native NBA app - I use Chromecast Ultra to watch the Celtics. Wished I could have waited to the sale linked above so I could have gotten the 65' instead at a similar price.

The C8-series LG OLED are on massdrop for the next 2-3 days. $1600 for 55", $2200 for 65", $4900 for 77". I'm really thinking about pulling the trigger on a 65. The only thing stopping me is my friend blew his whole bonus on a 77 about 2 months ago, I saw it and I had lust in my heart, but damn that's still a lot of money.

Buuuuump.

Looking to upgrade my 10 year old LG 47” LCD. No space for 75” so 65” is what I’m seeking.

Samsung’s OneConnect seems like a great invention - only one chord to the TV so you can hide everything. I might mount it but at first it’ll be on our entertainment center. Am I missing anything?

If not QLED, I am worried about OLED burn in as I watch mostly CNN so the static logo scares me. Should I at this time just save the money and go LED?

I’d like to keep it under $2,000 and stick with Samsung, LG, Sony or maybe Vizio (but I have a 4-year old Vizio upstairs and it sucks).

I will wait for a sale - might be Super Bowl week.

Another bump. I have an old LCD that is about to give up, it turns on after 3 or 4 tries but I feel like that won't be the case much longer.

I can grab a Best Buy gift card soon with some points, so was looking at their 43" size options. Do any that they carry in the $300 ballpark (250-350) stand out over others in a good or a bad way? I've heard good things about the higher-end TCL/Roku series, but nothing about the smaller ones.

The C9 (next-gen) LG TVs are coming "soon" - if that matters to you. I know they have new image processor chips in them, and HDMI 2.1 ports (potentially 4k@120Hz). At this point I'm gonna hold out for a 65C9 I think.

I don't have much ideas about TV's but after a recent move I now have a very large room that I want to use as my den and office. So I'm looking at a 75" TV and I meandered into BestBuy recently. I was looking to keep it under $2000 and I was drawn to Sony 75" X850G series but the rep said I was better off paying a "little " bit more and going for the Sony 75 x900F series, ( $2500), any advice ? I'm not married to the idea that it has to be Sony, most of my TVs are Samsung.

I switched from Samsung to Sony when I went to 4k a little over a year ago. I had the same dilemma you describe. I went with the 850 series. Saved a lot of money with no regrets. I don't know what your price bump is for the 900 but mine was several hundred. The 850 has been great for me.

I didn't want to bore my wife who was tagging along but from what I could gather he said something about the picture being more uniform and no "edge effect seepage " and that for sports such as soccer and NFL it would be smoother and less" stutter" . No clue if I would notice the difference and is it worth the extra $500. I really don't know the technicalities, maybe a better video card is that's the correct term. Like I said, I'm not a techie.

I have never noticed this effect and I watch a lot of sports. I spoke to someone in the business I trust who confirmed the 900 is definitely an objectively better picture. In fact he recommended it as well. When I saw both I didn't see $500+ worth of difference. I also got a promotional price on the 850. It ended up under $1,000 so it was a no brainer for me.

It's amazing how many people have such different views on stutter /blurring in TV's. Coming from the plasma world, where it basically doesn't exist, I refused to buy any LCD/LED for the last 15 years. I find most them unwatchable. Yet going to many friends houses, their TV's are stock and have extremely bad soap opera effect and everything else and they never notice.

I just got a LG OLED and after spending a few hours on the settings it's pretty damn good. Even the LG OLED after all the tweaking I can still see it at times. I'm still not sure i prefer the new OLED to to the old plasma.

I know I'm hyper sensitive to it but the blacks on the OLED, 4k out weigh the benefits of our 1080P plasma we bought in 2011. I really wish plasma had a better future. I'm not even sure it's possible but if there were 4k plasmas I'd be in heaven.

Wow, under $1000? I'd have been all over that too. Probably would have bought two...but wife would go crazy..she thinks big TVs are an eyesore. I'm only getting away with buying this larger one because I bought her the house she wanted. It seems like a lop-sided trade if you ask me.

I'm still holding out :) - it's probably time to buy one, I'm seeing the 65C9 at $2800 without any shopping/attempt to reduce prices. One of the things that stopped me is a good friend said he compared side-by-side and ended up getting the Sony XBR 65a9g (unfortunately, priced more like $3800). The other thing is I need to find the remnants of my wall mount kit so I can attach a new TV to it, I moved and can't find the box it ended up in...

Speaking of wall mounts. Despite having several flat screens, they all sit on various types of furniture. I'm considering getting the next one wall mounted, but I'm not sure. What are the advantages? Is it the sort of thing that once you have a wall mounted TV you will never go back? I know it requires a bit of DIY to do it right, but are there any negatives?
