3 Ups, 3 Downs on offense and defense for the ElCab Dolphins

Offense:
UP
Keenan Allen: +3.5 (#3 overall WR). The rookie has taken advantage of injuries in front of him and has become a reliable weapon for Rivers
OL- 4 of my 5 linemen had games and all finished with positive rankings (Pouncey +3.1, Frederick, +2.8, Strief +1.7, Brooks +1.3)
Chris Ivory: +1.1. After having done next to nothing this year, Ivory showed some life with 18 carries, 138 yards and a TD

DOWN
C. Ponder: -2.4. Another opportunity, another dud. Manziel can't get here fast enough
J. Cameron: -2.9. This makes two bad games in his last 4, but is still having a strong breakout season.
TJ Graham: -3.5. Getting some chances to play in BUF but is quickly getting passed by M. Goodwin on the depth charts

Defense:
UP
S. Lotulelei: +2.3. The rookie continues to play like a grizzled veteran and has provided stability to the DL all season long
C. Heyward: +3.0. Had a strong day against NE with 1 sack, 2 QB hits and 2 hurries. Had his best game of the season.
D. Milliner: +1.0. Not a strong rating by any means, but he's had a rough rookie season so far and held up well vs. Drew Brees, even getting some time matching up with Jimmy Graham and holding his own.

DOWN
A. Dennard: -2.6. Didn't have a strong showing this week, giving up a TD in coverage, along with a lot of yards.
C. Thomas:-1.8. One of my last picks is proving to be a season-long bust. If I could cut him now, I probably would.
P. Haralson: -0.6. Not a terrible rating, but he was the only LB on my team to play, so he wasn't carrying the unit by any means.

Overall, I'm happy with the strong play I've been getting from my offensive and defensive lines. Having Keenan Allen break out, a guy I wish the Pats targeted in the draft, has given the offense a second receiving weapon to go with Cameron. I need help with my LB crew and for my young secondary to take a step forward, as well as identifying a potential franchise QB during the offseason. This team isn't close to the playoffs, but I like the long-term outlook if I can get someone competent under center.

My midseason(ish) report:

MVPs:
RB Gio Bernard - his overall 12.7 grade is #2 among RBs, and his +6.2 passing grade is best on my squad. 81 carries for 361 yards (4.5 YPC) and 4 TDs, plus 30 catches on 37 targets for 267 yards and 2 more TDs.
LT Anthony Castonzo - something like the 25th LT selected in our draft, he's the 12th-rated LT (18th OT) per PFF (+10.0) and is just 25.
LG Kory Lichtensteiger - late-round pick is PFF's #4-rated G with a +9.8.
Honorable mention to supplemental pick Barry Cofield (+5.9, 8th-rated pass-rushing DT), early-down OLB James Harrison (+7.4, 2nd-rated run-stuffing 4-3 OLB), pass-rusher Bruce Irvin (+6.5), punter Michael Koenen (+16.7)

LVPs:
C Peter Konz - he had a lousy PFF grade as a rookie, but I thought a year of experience and moving to his natural C position would help. Nope, he's at -12.1 on a beleaguered Atlanta OL.
DE/OLB Quentin Coples - an early-season injury and the Jets' usage of him at OLB hasn't helped, but he's -9.5 overall and the last-ranked pass-rushing 3-4 OLB
CB Derek Cox and S Ryan Clark - two guys supposed to be veteran stalwarts in my secondary are -6.6 and -6.9 respectively, contributing to my overall -21.1 pass coverage PFF grade
Honorable mention to CB Stephon Gilmore, struggling to a -6.2 grade as he returns from injury, and TE Lance Kendricks (-4.4, 6th-worst run-blocking TE), plus DL Richard Seymour (semi-retired), WR Michael Crabtree (PUP), DT Jesse Williams (IR), and DB Brandon Harris (can't get on the field)

Crabtree just returned to practice, and Kaepernick is coming on after a slow start, so things are looking up. The squad is probably 4-5 right now.

I'll do a more complete write up after this weekend's games, but let me start here by noting that I managed to draft both Aaron Hernandez and Jonathan Martin, and they are pretty good proxies for the rest of my draft.  Bridgewater or bust.

Eli Manning and David Wilson were kind of the face of my team, and a reason I had been down on them for most of the year. But my defense looks like it could be one of the best in the league.

DoDM Defense
POS Player Snaps PFF
DE/OLB Lamarr Houston 576 12.4
DT Tommy Kelly 223 2.5
NT Phil Taylor 370 5.5
DE Muhammad Wilkerson 604 16.9
DE/OLB Dion Jordan 178 2.4
OLB Brian Orakpo 521 11.8
ILB Brad Jones 310 0.0
ILB Jasper Brinkley 196 1.2
CB Brent Grimes 665 10.0
CB Kyle Arrington 480 3.1
FS Jairus Byrd 280 6.2
SS LaRon Landry 331 4.4

I would probably run a 3-4, 4-3 hybrid. Some sort of 3-4 overload to get Lamarr on the line and Orakpo rushing off the other side. This team would be tremendous in pass rush and run defense. They would also cover WR1s extremely well. Their weaknesses would definitely be in the middle of the field and against TEs where I would be relying on LBs to drop back in coverage. I think you'd see Byrd or Landry (who's been good in coverage this year) cheating to the seam or covering TEs.

The Kelly injury hurts but compared to other teams I've been lucky in that department so far. Byrd missing the first few weeks would have been a struggle also.

Also I think my offensive line being that much better than the Giants would lead to Eli having a much better season. My line was created for Pass coverage and they are far superior to the Giants in that regard.

DoDM OL vs NYG OL
  Pass Block
DoDM Eugene Monroe 7.8
NYG William Beatty -7.8
DoDM Charles Brown -9.8
NYG Justin Pugh -3.7
DoDM Andy Levitre 2.7
NYG Kevin Boothe -0.2
DoDM Uche Nwaneri 4.3
NYG Snee & Diehl -14.3
DoDM Dominic Raiola 4.3
NYG Jim Cordle -3.0

Total DoDM 9.3
  NYG -29.0

Charles Brown should also slightly improve if he was on the right side, where he has spent most of his career.

This has the looks of a playoff team if Eli can improve with more time to throw.

I want to reiterate that I have no way to access PFF, so I can't do any real writeup of the San Anselmo Raiders. In the absence of data, I'm going to just proclaim that I'm probably 10-0 with an average margin of victory of 47 points.

Finally spent the money to get PFF stats, so here goes:

QB - Matt Flynn (-5.6), Michael Vick (-0.2)  Ugh

RB - Alfred Morris (4.5), Ronnie Brown (-0.2)

WR - Sidney Rice (1.4 - IR), Denarius Moore (2.2), Chris Givens (-1.3)

TE - Rob Gronkowski (5.7), Scott Chandler (-6.4), Luke Willson (-0.7)

OL - Matt Kalil (-1.1) , James Carpenter (-7.5), Max Unger (-0.1), Brian Winters (-10.4), Jordan Gross (16.8), Austin Howard (7.3)

DL - Connor Barwin (-2.0), Alex Okafor (-0.7), Jason Jones (-4.4), CJ Mosley (7.2), William Gholston (-1.5), Ian Williams (-2.7)

LB - James Lauriniatis (-5.4), Nick Roach (-9.7), Sio Moore (5.1)

CB - Cortland Finnegan (-19.7), Antoine Winfield (Retired), Walter Thurmond III (3.5), Tharold Simon (PUP)

S - Dashon Goldson (-7.1), Kam Chancellor (2.9)

K - Phil Dawson (14.3)

P - Jon Ryan (4.5)

Likely the worst team in the league.  I probably shouldn't have done this exercise.

where the darn libs live
QB - Andy Dalton (-4.5)
RB - Arian Foster (5.6), Zac Stacy (4.5), Leon Washington (0.4)
WR - Donario Alexander (no snaps, injured), AJ Jenkins (-3.7), Davone Bess (-4.1), Kenbrell Thompkins (-2.3), Ryan Spadola (0.5)
TE - Vance McDonald (-4.8), Martellus Bennett (-2.2)
OL - Jason Peters (8.1), TJ Lang (4.5), Brian de la Puente (-0.3), Hugh Thornton (-11.2), Demar Dotson (17.6)
DL - Derrick Morgan (5.7), Brian Robison (9.9), Kevin Williams (1.1), Mike Martin (5.4)
LB - Jonathan Casillas (-3.7), Akeem Dent (-10.5), Man'ti Teo (-3.1), Jon Bostic (-1.9), Jarvis Jones (-2.3), Jelani Jenkins (-1.0)
CB - Chris Harris (8.9), Robert McClain (-0.6), Jamar Taylor (-1.3)
S - Adrian Wilson (no snaps, injured), Jamar Wilcox (0.2)
K - Stephen Gostkowski (26.5)
P - Shawn Powell (3.7)

Ridiculously awful WR/TE and linebackers, but the lines are strong, the secondary is... not awful (outside of not having a second safety), and the RB group was doing quite well before Foster got hurt.  My plan to have a ton of huge TEs and WRs to go after catches (and a few slot guys like Spadola and Bess) has failed.  Miserably.

But yeah, I'm going to have to basically go after a new safety and then a whole new wideout group.  I think the LB group will improve since its composed of entirely 1st or 2nd year players.  Teo, Jones, and Casillas will all get better, not to mention Jenkins.  Dent might not, and Bostic's kind of in the middle.

Because I was feeling good about myself today, I'll take myself down a peg.

A review of the Real Fantasy Redskins.

Offense
Position Player Rating

QB Joe Flacco -13.2
RB Le'Veon Bell -1.5
RB LaRod Stephens-Howling -3
TE Vernon Davis 7.8
TE2 Niles Paul -2.2
WR1 Alshon Jeffery 8.6
WR2 DeAndre Hopkins 3.6
WR3 Brandon Gibson 6.6
LT Trent Williams 22.3
LG Wade Smith -13.9
C Fernando Velasco -8.8
RG Barrett Jones NA
RT Gosder Cherilus 11.3

Good Christ.  I'd like to think Flacco would be putting up better numbers with this WR group, but in all likelihood he just sucks.  Love our WRs.  I think Bell might be a player, and our OL might be something to work with, but Flacco might be a heavy anchor.  Probably time to turn to Kirk Cousins.

Defense
Position Player Rating

DE Greg Hardy 12.6
DE Da'Quan Bowers -2.2
DT Nick Fairley -3.6
DT Sheldon Richardson 14.6
WLB Alec Ogletree -5.6
MLB DeMeco Ryans -13.3
SLB Jolpu Bartu -4.5
CB Kareem Jackson 0
CB Greg Toler -3.8
SS Major Wright -21.6
FS Kerry Rhodes NA*
CB3 David Amerson -6.3

Question here is whether Hardy, Richardson and the rest of our front seven are enough to mask the holes in the secondary.  Ryans is hurt playing in Philly's 3-4 scheme, I think he'd be better in our natural 4-3.  Ogletree will be a player at WLB. Bartu might be something at SLB, so we've got two young guys on the outside in our 4-3 with Ryans in the middle, and I think that would work. I wish the rumors swirling around Kerry Rhodes weren't keeping him out of the NFL.

Nice to see you can access PFF again mascho. I can't believe they have Ogletree rated as a negative. The kid has looked pretty damn good to me. I honestly don't think PFF is a great way to evaluate the players. They have a decent system but I don't think it's completely infallible. Are there any other sites that give some sort of rating to defensive players? I know FO does offense and they only do defense as a whole.

PFF's methodology probably sells playmakers a little bit short. A player might make an amazing play on third down to break up a pass and stop a drive and get a +2, then blow his run fit and get pancaked later and get a -2. He grades out as zero per PFF methodology, but his good play stopped a 25-yard gain and his bad play led to a 7-yard run.

Kenny Vaccaro was suffering from the same effect early in the year.

I don't know. If anybody has the game and wants to put in the time, I'd still support it.

Despite all the shit we've given you, it seems possible that Nick Foles will be the best pick in the entire draft. Kudos and wow.

First 5 games: -13.4
Last 5 games: +4.7

I think he might have turned it around. With him not sucking and Rinehart back we have a top 10 offensive line and a top 5 front 4. Ryan Fitzpatrick will have all kinds of time to throw and we will have some big holes for our two good RBs. KFP, I think our offense but not be that bad. Ryan Fitzpatrick has put up 2 straight 111.0+ QB rating games one against the Colts.

I guess that makes sense, but the guys that retired or got hurt this year would still be eligible to play in this years game. It would give all of us an idea of what we drafted.

Are the rookies this year graded appropriately in this version? How does Madden grade rookies - and do they update it for the game as time goes on (do they do a rookie patch?)

I mean what is appropriate?  There are problems with everything we want to use to get some objectivity into this exercise.

I believe they just start out with a number connected to their draft position.  Like Fisher would have been like an 83 and the lower a player was drafted the lower his rating.  Matt Elam is probably around 70-73.

You can download roster updates that correlate more with actual player performance but it comes with it's own set of problems.

Yeah I was one of the people who said they would do a Madden sim but I heard the game was terrible so I didn't feel like wasting $60 on it. Maybe when it comes down in price.

But then there are the other problems you mentioned. Do we use their default rosters? Do we use their end of the year roster updates? How do we handle injuries? How do we handle the rest of our rosters so we all have full 53 man teams?

I'm good either way. If we want to do a simulation after the season, that would be fun. But if its too much of a pain in the ass then no big deal.

Hey KFP guess who is the 19th ranked QB by QBR and 20th in DVOA at 0.9% (just a crack above average)? Ryan Fitzpatrick. Dude, our QB situation is fine.

17th in completion %
12th in Y/A
22nd in NFL QB Rating
19th in PFF's QB Rating (signature stat)
4th in drop % (Bad luck)
11th in Accuracy %
3rd in Accuracy % under pressure
24th in sack % (good to be lower)
6th in completion % under pressure
12th in completion % in no play action but terrible on play action
2nd best NFL QB rating with 2.6 seconds or more - dude with our line he is going to be good!

He can scramble ok too.

Ryan Fitzpatrick's last three games, and where that would rank him for the season:

3 starts
74 - 103, 71.8% completion percentage (1st)
269 yards per game (9th)
7.83 yards per attempt (6th)
110.6 average QB Rating (3rd)
5 TD 0 INT

This guy is leading is to the Superbowl you little bitches.

(as long as other teams defenses are as bad as the Jaguars, Colts, and Raiders.)

On the injury front:

Charles Johnson has a sprained MCL from Cannon's leg whip. I don't like dirty plays regardless of who makes them. And while I enjoyed not having him on the field as a Pats fan it was still a dirty play and will cost us at least 1-3 weeks. He was ruled out against MIA. Had he played at 100% I think that game is not as close.

Webb is battling his return from an ACL tear and has admitted he is not 100%. However he has been better these last 3 weeks than he was at the start of the season.

Rinehart - he's back but his foot/toe isn't 100%

Asamoah: Shoulder - missing time.

Swope's brain is practically mush - this is a very sad situation for a guy who had the skills to be Welker like.

Gabbert: Season ending IR for right forearm injury + a torn labrum in his left shoulder. He sucks anyway.

Dorsey: Hamstring isn't 100% but he should go tonight.

Think that about covers it.

Very interested in two of our rotational rookies: Bass jr, and Brown. Both guys have played well for rookies in limited snaps..

Xavier Rhodes had 4 passes defended yesterday and is already about league average or better for a CB 2 in his first year. That bodes well for us as most guys like Rhodes play even better in years 2+3. Webb + Rhodes next year might be the best CB tandem in our league. We'll see. There is some risk there but I think they could be/should be a top 10 tandem if not top 5.

Overall, not a bad week from the team. Missing quite a few players due to bye weeks, but I think we would've had a chance to beat an injured and ineffective Intercourse Sex Panthers this week. Possibly our first win of the season.

Well, I'm going to be dumping most of my WR and TE, and probably LB as well.  Yikes.  And Dalton continues to backslide.

My Offensive skill players:

QB - Nick Foles - finally threw his first INT of the year :( , but he's looked like a top starter in Chip Kelly's offense.
RB - Eddie Lacy - Solid workhorse. He's been exactly what I hoped he'd be.
RB - LaMichael James - Stuck in SF behind some really talented RB's. He would be the perfect compliment to Lacy.
WR - Torrey Smith - Has shown more route running this year and looks like a true #1 WR.
WR - Tavon Austin - Up and down year, but he's an absolute homerun hitter. An all-around weapon; rushing, receiving and ST's.
WR - Da'rick Rogers - Just when I thought he was an afterthought, Indy finally sets him lose. Luck to Rogers should be heard a lot the rest of the year. Would compliment Smith well.
WR - Marvin Jones - Disappeared in a few games but would be a fantastic compliment to my other receivers. 4-wide up-tempo? Good luck.
TE - Ladarius Green - Showed up for some big plays in 3 out of the last 4 games. Would be a solid starter out of Gates' shadow.

For a team that focused on Defense, I couldn't be happier with the way my offense came together. While my o-line isn't fantastic, I think they'd be serviceable with this crew.

Bump, to keep this on the first page.

And so people can marvel at my offense.

I also have Justin Tucker as my kicker if you want to add that too.

I like bumping this thread.

Especially when Ryan Fitzpatrick puts up 400+ yards and 4 TD's last week.

Yeah, KFP - I think we're pretty good.

PFF methodology

QB: Ryan Fitzpatrick: +0.1
WR1: Dwayne Bowe: +5.5
WR2: Greg Jennings: +4.4
WR3: Aldrick Robinson: +2.2
TE1: Travis Kelce: IR
TE 2: Jacob Tamme: +3.8
RB1: DeMarco Murray: +16.0
RB2: Knowshon Moreno: +5.6

Obviously we are hampered by TE depth problems but Tamme is a solid receiving TE who would be starting on most teams. We lack a true #1 WR but we have 3 guys who are passable. None of them are bad - but they are not elite. Where we are stacked is at RB. Moreno and Murray are threats as pass receivers and runners. Murray is a beast and I am so glad KFP and I decided on him over Ridley.

LT: Michael Roos: +19.2
LG: Jon Asamoah: +7.9
C: Gino Gradkowski: -19.4
RG: Chad Rinehart: -2.8
RT: Cordy Glenn: +20.3

Line: It's pretty obvious that we have 3/5 guys here that are considered good to elite. Cordy Glenn is really coming into his own... and keep in mind those numbers are as an LT facing the best competition. Our weakness is at C. Look, Rinerart is a JAG - but he's basically an average guard who is better against the run than the pass. I think given who we have at LT, LG,and RT that our weakness at RG and C won't be as problematic.

Offensive +/-: 62.8

P: Bryan Anger: +6.0
K: Robbie Gould: +13.1
10% of ST +/-: +1.91
Both our guys are having down years but still ok.

Defense:

DE: Charles Johnson: +6.3
DE: Carlos Dunlap: +8.3
DT: Kyle D. Williams: +30.2
DT: Glenn Dorsey: +11.3

Rotational DE/DT: David Bass: -2.6

Just from our front 4
Sacks: 32
Hits: 43
Hurries: 119

SAM: Manny Lawson: +3.9
MIKE: Patrick Willis: +14.8
WILL: Arthur Brown: -0.5

FS: Chris D. Clemons: +7.3
SS: Tashaun Gibson: -5.3

CB1: Lardarius Webb: +6.7
CB2: Xavier Rhodes: +1.5
Slot CB: Richard Marshall: -8.6

Sacks: 39
Hits: 48
Hurries: 143

Defensive +/-: 75.9

Overall +/-: +138.7

KFP, did you know the highest NFL team on PFF is only +148.5? The next highest is 115.3. Now granted I'm not saying we'd be the 2nd best team in the NFL but... you look at our roster and guys, I think we're a SB contender. Our defensive front 4 is a nightmare. Our LB core is solid and most of our secondary is impressive. Our CB1 and FS are definitely top notch. And Xavier Rhodes has a positive PFF rating as a rookie. That is rare. Our two RBs are good, we have a solid game manager QB with 4 decent receiving options and an offensive line that should hold up pretty well. We are balanced and have no glaring weaknesses even if we don't have a top 10 QB.
