Draft Order and Procedure. The draft order was randomly determined using excel and will proceed like a snake draft.  From Monday to Friday, each person will have a six hour window to make their pick (starting at the time of the pick before you).  On Saturday and Sunday, the window will be 12 hours.  Every night, the clock will stop from 12 to 8AM EST.  For example, if on Tuesday night the last pick is made at 9PM EST, then three hours of the window will elapse that night and the player will have until 11AM EST the next day to make a selection.  Those people with wraparound picks only get one window, not double time.  Every time you make a pick, you should PM the next person in the draft order to inform them that they are up.  If you have any doubt about your ability to make a pick within your window of time, it is recommended that you use a proxy by PMing your pick (or top couple choices) to somebody who can post in your place.

Those at the top of the draft (SoxFan58, BSJ, etc) can start picking players as soon as this thread is posted.  However, given that some people might not be paying attention yet, we won't start the clock on anybody until next Monday at 9AM EST.

Player Eligibility. The player pool consists of active NFL players as well as college players that are officially draft-eligible: ie, you can pick Luke Joeckel, you cannot pick Jadeveon Clowney.

Rosters. We'll use the same official roster spots as the last draft, as that's how Sumner's draft software is set up, with a couple informal tweaks.

Offense: QB, RB, RB, FB, TE, WR, WR, WR, LT, LG, C, RG, RT.
Defense: DE, DE, DT/NT, DT/NT, ILB, ILB, OLB, OLB, CB, CB, CB, S, S.
Special Teams: K, P.

Exceptions:

1. The FB slot on offense should be considered an offensive skill position utility player - you can fill this position with RB, WR, TE, or FB.
2. If you are running a 3-4 base, then your second DT/NT slot should be considered a front seven utility player.  Fill that slot with whatever depth you think is most useful.
3. If you are running a 4-3 base, then your second ILB slot should be considered a front seven utility player.  Fill that slot with whatever depth you think is most useful.
4. The third CB slot is really a nickelback and can be filled by any DB, whether a corner or safety.

Playing guys wildly out of position is frowned upon and you should be able to make a reasonable argument for why it makes sense.  If you're clearly
fucking around and/or trying to bend the rules, then your team will be taken away.

Team Names. When you make your first pick, you should also claim a team name (one of the NFL teams) and a city (any city in the world) of your choice.  I'll add those to the draft spreadsheet eventually.  A few people have already mentioned teams they want at the end of the other thread, so check there first and/or hash it out with them.

Pick Format. When you make a pick, declare the player and position in bold type near the top of your post.  Follow that with a few comments about why you're picking that player, preferably along with a picture or video. For example, one of the more regrettable picks (and unforgettable pictures) from the last thread:

I was absolutely torn between three guys: Adrian Peterson, Larry Fitzgerald and this guy. Even torn to the point where I asked my co-workers... and they couldn't decide either. But in the end, I'm seeing how many people are taking QBs, so with the tenth overall pick, the Needle Colts select...

QB Carson Palmer

Even aside from his obvious weiner eating skills, Palmer's been a stud all of his career. Sure, his arm has been anchored by guys like Houshmanzada (well, had been) and Chad Ochocinco (yes, that's now his listed name on his NFL contract), but he's also been held down by the, well, stellar incarceration rate of the Bungles. Check out these stats:

88.9 career passer rating
3 seasons with 25+ TDs and 3800+ yards
63.7 career completion percentage

...and most of those percentage stats are held down by a horrible, injury-ridden season last year. And a decline? Look at how the Bengals have done recently! Stick him with a fresh new team and he'll do fine.  The guy's not even 30 yet.

That's not just me being nice - I think I could learn more about football doing this activity with KFP than by myself. And since this is a purely academic exercise I don't care if he has the final say.

#3 overall is much higher than I was expecting. IOW, no Tebow offense for me.

A bunch of people have been calling out teams in the other thread, which is fine by me.  If you go to the draft results page, you'll see which teams have been taken already (in parentheses after a few of the names).

Well, I'll take the Falcons again but I am relocating them to the Carrier Dome in Syracuse and rebranding them the Snow Falcons.

Thanks SMU, I'm in and I'd like the Seahawks.  Yes, I will keep them in Seattle to continue the best home field advantage in the NFL.  I'll probably just re-draft their existing team.

X-post from other thread, I'll take the Rams and move them to LA if RedOctober doesn't want to keep the association.

Otherwise I'll grab the Chiefs and keep them in the city with the fastest internet in New Googleton (Kansas City).

Another crosspost:  I'll drop the Ravens.  I just...I just can't right now.  I'm also going to do something else I can't really imagine, and pick up...the Jets.

EDIT:  RedOctober has requested the Jets, and that's fine, I'll take the Skins.

I bugged soxfan58 again about getting this thing started.  He was logged in today so I don't know what the deal might be.

FWIW, I am 100% sure who I would take with the 1st pick.  After that, it quickly gets very murky in my opinion so it should be interesting to see what happens.

Do tell. I don't see a clear cut #1 but I do see a clear cut top 3 with the big decision coming at pick 4.

I actually think #1 is clear cut (Rodgers) but then you get into short-term excellence (Brady / Manning / Brees) vs long-term potential (Luck / Kaepernick / Wilson / RGIII), with guys like Ryan, Roethlisberger, Eli, and Flacco somewhere in the middle.

I know it's early and the picks are more obvious but I think we should avoid naming names unless guys are already off the board.

Just for giggles if we were to be able to draft coaches what round would BB get drafted? Compared to the better "younger" coaches in the NFL like the Harbaugh's or Tomlin?

Hmmm...so SoxFan58 is currently online.

I think he may not understand how PMs work and may not realize that he's part of this draft. He signed up on the old thread (post from Jan 4th) and hasn't posted anywhere on the site since Jan 8th, despite apparently being signed in a fair amount.

I don't want to call the clock on anyone, given that I said it wouldn't start until Monday, but it seems like he may be just kind of checked out and clueless.

Ok, this is ridiculous.  SoxFan58 is oblivious to PMs and has been on SOSH throughout the day without checking this thread.  I don't see much hope of anything changing in the next couple days.  Waiting until Monday and then inevitably skipping him in the draft seems pointless.  At the same time, I did say that I wouldn't penalize anybody until Monday, I don't want to totally screw him over, and I would like to give him a chance to participate.

So given that at least a few of us think its a huge no-brainer as the #1 pick, I'm just going to draft Aaron Rodgers, QB for SoxFan58.  If he comes back by the end of the second round, great.  If not, we'll find somebody else to take the team.

Heh, I wouldn't mind skipping SF58 at all, but Rodgers would not have been my #1.

Edit: not that he's not the best QB right now + looking at a number of great years at age 29. Just that I'd be taking a chance on a younger QB, looking to be set for 10+ years.

I'm also curious who'll be the first non-QB. Do you go for a defensive anchor like a Von Miller, JJ Watt, or a post-ACL Revis? Or do you go offensive with Megatron?

Eh....I don't really know what to do here....I know. Need to go QB, but I don't want to go with a 30 yo or older guy right now. I also don't want to go with someone who will get broken in 5 years because of his reckless style. So, I will go with what I think is sort of a no brainer....

QB Andrew luck

Sorry, can't bold from here or be all fancy.

Kid made the playoffs in his rookie year and only looks to get better from here. Looks like the kind of QB, n a dome, who can play for a long time a a high level. Yeah, woud love 1 or 2 more years Under his belt to be sure, but leap of faith.

Toyed with watt but think I will get a total shite QB on the wrap if I do that...

Well, if BSJ is going to solve my dilemma for me, who am I to complain?

Look, there's a top tier of active QB and then a second tier of wonderful prospects. As I said to MMS last night by PM, I would not have taken Rodgers at #1 because of his concussion history. While I think he's in his prime, he's not blemish-free and among that top tier, he's one-nasty-collision from a career-ending injury. So, cross him off then.

Then, BSJ takes Luck and the 10-year window. Which is fine, Luck seems like a wonderful prospect. Of course, his actual performance over the next 2-3 seasons figures to be SIGNIFICANTLY worse than the other top-tier options, which (again) is fine, if you plan to be competitive in 2016-2020. So cross him off, too.

Leaving two top tier options, with the wildcard(s) after that. Both have suffered a serious injury in their distant past, both are regarded as precision passers with tremendous supporting casts on offense and both have long track records of success. One is more decorated by awards and wins, the other is younger and less clearly on the back 9 of his career.

But in the end, this is an easy pick. This player has been one of the top 3 players in the NFL for every season (save one) since seizing the starting job. He's aging but still very effective and has a smart coaching staff that has drafted/schemed to take more of the load from him as years go on, crafting a supportive running game to supplement him. He operates in front of the best-coached OL in the NFL and rarely takes big hits.

Ladies and gentlemen, with the 3rd overall selection in the 2013 SoSH RealFantasy Pigskin Draft, the Bengal Bay Bengals select:

Tom Brady, QB

Alright, because of the storm I'm doing this mobile so I'll try to get a pic up later. I was down to Luck or this guy and I figured I had absolutely no chance at Luck unless some sort of miracle happened, so it makes my choice easier. I would've liked to go QB here, but there's a couple of obvious choices, and with one being on the wrong side of his 30's and the other coming off of a catastrophic injury I decided to take a gamble with the first d lineman off the board.

With the fourth pick in the draft the Patriots select "The Milkman" JJ Watt DE

Watt finished the regular season with 81 tackles (69 solo), 20.5 sacks, 23 tackles for loss, 4 forced fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries, and an astonishing 16 passes defended on his way to becoming the 2012 Defensive Player of the Year. The kid will be 24 this season and is the most dominant defensive presence in the game. He excels in every aspect of his position. I'm likely to wind up with a lesser QB on the wrap around, but I'm going to make sure my team terrorizes the opposition.

With the passing of Art Modell and the recently announced move of the Cleveland Browns to Austin, GM Ozzie Newsome is moving the World Champion franchise back to where he starred as a player. That's right: the Cleveland Ravens!

With the fifth pick in the draft, the Ravens select:

QB Colin Kaepernick, SF 49ers

Kaepernick excelled in his first season as a starter, finishing first among QBs in Y/A, 3rd in DVOA, 4th in rushing yards (despite only starting half the way), and 1st in tattoos. He possesses both traditional QB skills (62.4% completion) and size (6'5"), and the youth (25) and athleticism (4.53 40) to run these new-fangled spread option offenses that are all the rage these days. He's also surrounded by the best O-line in the league, good receivers, and terrific coaching that makes him less risky than a player with his admittedly thin track record would ordinarily be. I hope to surround him with a similar supporting cast in Cleveland.

They might not be the best O-Line (they might be, not sure) but they have the best scheme and execute extremely well. I think that speaks to their O-Line coaching too.

Holy moly. I actually get to pick the QB I wanted.

I'm actually IN Seoul right now, so from the beatiful and frigid land of the morning calm, Steelers select:

QB Russell "Man Muscle" Wilson

Typing on an iPad so details to come later.

Let me count the ways I love my new franchise QB:
  • Also played baseball (like Kaeps) for the NC Wolfpacks, so he can zip a fast one
  • The only question mark was his size, but the 5'11" (203lb) beast played like he was 6'3"
  • Arguably had the best rookie season ever: Russell anked 4th in the NFL in passer rating (100.0), beating the previous rookie record set by Ben Roethlisberger in 2004 (98.1) - Wiki
  • Stats tally: 3,118 yards, 26 touchdowns and just 10 INTs for the year
  • Also runs & knows how to duck: 489 yards and 4 TDs, averaging 5.2 yards per carry (hey! No ACL surgeries!)
  • Ties Peyton Manning's rookie TD record with 26 honkers
  • Beats Sammy freakin' Baugh for most yardage in a PO game by a rookie with 385 yards, two touchdowns and 0 INTs vs. Falcons
  • My favorite: sets the NFL rookie record for pass-to-interception differential, which came in at 26 TDs to just 10 INTs - eat that Luck!
  • Even shows up at the Pro Bowl (8/10, 98 yards, 3 touchdowns, no INT for a 147.1 rating). That shows he C-A-R-E!1!!
Per interesting PM exchange with SM, here's my take on WIlson / Kaeps / Luck / RGIII debate:

If I had the 1st pick, I would have gone with Luck, not Rodgers (close to 30, injury, etc.)

Only reason for Wilson over Kaeps is turnovers. Wilson had a TD/INT differential of 26-10. That's superb for any QB, but as a rookie? Totally crazy.

And he just runs enough to fuck with the defense, but unlike RGIII, can truly win one with his arm.

Yeah, I'm also super excited:

She's usually a bit calmer: (she's on the left, but it's just an excuse to get Mrs. Tannehill to make an appearance):

P.S. JerBear is up next and he's PM'd.

I was hoping SM wouldn't take Wilson, so TY. But the greater thanks is for finally bringing Ozzie back to Cleveland. Well done.

That's a lot higher than I thought Kap or Wilson would go. Not saying they're bad picks, just surprised they're at the top of the first round.

If SM took Wilson, I would have picked Kap for sure.

Thank you for taking JJ Watt with the 4th pick BTW ;) I think even the best linemen have a span of 4-5 years of being great (2-3 years of total domination -- look at JPP and Ware, even Haynesworth) and look where Schaub gets you in the playoffs.

I thought Watt would have been the 1st or 2nd non-QB to be picked, but would have been at 7-12 range.

Well, I was hoping JJ Watt would fall to me as everyone snapped up the good QBs, damn you Eck!  Oh well, instead, I had a young, consistently good QB fall into my lap.  While he may not be as good as some of the other QBs still on the board, he's younger and healthier.

With the 7th overall pick in the SoSH RealFantasy Pigskin 2013 draft, the Houston Texans select...Matt "Matty Ice" Ryan, QB

While he doesn't have the stats that some other QBs have put up, he's been the 7th rated QB in DVOA all 3 of the last years.  The only guys better are much older or big injury risks.

Matt Ryan and Russell Wilson? Are you people serious!?!

Karachi should not be able to tab the 2nd or 3rd best QB in the whole league with pick #8 but you people made it happen. Great job on that.
