Yeah he finished ina 2 way tie for 8th, so he could have dropped a stroke and still gotten into a bigger group at 9th, but it would have cost money.

And I am sure making that putt really was important for him emotionally after having a rough run of holes, and really making a mess of 18

Even though nearly everyone in the top 15 were under par today. Even par final round is huge considering what he has on the line.

Yep, he's in next week, and according to Bill Burt's twitter feed, he's going to earn $208,000 today. So big for him on so many levels.

Does he not get the points in any case?
No, he doesn't get FedEx points since he doesn't have a tour card. If he earns a card they'll give them to him retroactively, but I believe he would need to win for that to happen this season.

DotB- Any idea on what sort of exemptions he has for this season?

Edit: this was a crazy good week for him.
Finishes T8, the guys ahead of him....Spieth, DJ, Snedeker, Day, Rahm, Woodland and Kraft. Outside of Kraft, the other 6 guys are top 50 players in the world.

As far as I know, he has zero status, and no real exemptions lined up before now (other than this week at Pebble). He got into Pebble, I believe, under a sponsor's exemption, probably because of his relationship with Perocchi (they met back in like 1999 at the US Amateur and have been really close ever since). Now, he plays next week, and I would imagine if he continues to play well, he'll find himself getting a few more invitations and exemptions, etc.

You want to know just how good this week was for him? He started it on Sunday watching the Patriots win the Super Bowl in Houston.

Thanks - I assumed he had some sort of status for coming so close, but apparently not.

Hopefully he gets more exemptions and can earn his way back.

More importantly Rob went 75-69 and missed the cut (142). Wonder how much the weather hurt his first round.

I should know this but how does the priority for tournaments work once all cards are handed out? Do the regular season 25 take priority over the playoffs or do they take all 50 and rank them by earnings?

This also puts him over 1Mil in career earnings. Can't really figure out if that is Web.com only

Hard to be definitive but I think that is career on the Web.com tour & PGA combined.

Crazy thing is.

PGA Tour 2017 Earnings - $224,000 (1 top 10 and only 4 events played)
Web.com Tour 2017 Earnings - $150,000 (20 events)
Web.com Finals - $161,000 (4 event playoff)

Just 1 top 10 on the PGA tour can earn so much money.

All in all crazy good year for Rob and I am excited to see him play 25 events on the big stage this year.

So if I am reading this correctly they alternate between the top 25 money list, and the finals ranks. So that should mean Rob is #8 in the Priority ranking when it comes to getting into tournaments. I would suspect that would get him into a lot of them

Yeah, Rob is in a great position this year. When he got his card a few years ago after finishing 25th in the Web.com playoffs, he was literally the last man in the priority rankings going into the season, and basically had to fly into events, and hope guys didn't show up, decided not to play, etc., and then if he couldn't get in, try to get in via the Monday qualifier. He flew to Mexico and other places only to have to fly back home without playing. It shouldn't be nearly as bad this year.

I would estimate that he's going to get into 25-30 tournaments this year. Of course, a couple of good early finishes and he could climb up the money list, and get in via that route and not have to worry about priority rankings.

A half million plus in earnings this year is incredible for him, and I think he can now really focus on just playing golf. He's done the Tour once before, he knows the courses, he knows the cities, and all of that stuff makes things a lot easier. I expect him to have a much better go of it this time around than the first time. I can't wait.

Huh, just noticed this thread got started. Like I said in the other one, his brother thinks he's just tapped out right now. Sounds like he needs a break, so maybe missing the cut and getting home for a few days will help him get back on track. Long season ahead.

Wouldn't surprise me at all, both physically and mentally. One hell of a grind he's been on the last 2 months and then last week ends on a Mon so it's even a shorter week than normal. Only natural to have a little bit of a let down after all of that. I base that off of all my years of training as a sports psychologist.
I'm sure he wouldn't but must be tempting to just WD and take an extra day even.

Better round so far today, -2 on the round through 6, but still a big hill to climb as he needs to get to -1 to make the cut.

As an aside, I am glad he is on the tour for so many reasons, but man shot tracker on the PGA tour site is so much better

Made another one -3 through 7. Up to +2, only 3 shots back of the cut. If he makes this cut, it would be a serious turnaround.

It’s in Malaysia. I’m assuming he chose rest over travel.
Probably an expensive trip if you don't have the guarantees/sponsor. Probably would cost 10 grand to play that

He's not eligible, a current tour card doesnt get you into the tournament. 60 spots are based on last year's FedEx standings, 10 from the Asian Tour Order of Merit, 8 sponsor exemptions.

Next week's field will be similar. Next up, probably Sanderson Farms which is a nice opportunity against a weaker field. Cody Gribble won there last year and rode that all the way to the 2nd round of the playoffs despite missing about a billion cuts in a row.

That makes sense, thanks. Would have thought at this point any chance to get a few $ towards next year's card would have been worth the travel. But a nice 2 week rest must feel like heaven to him right about now.

Honestly, I think Rob will play in any tournament he can get into, rest be damned, just to ensure he'll be able to retain his card at year end. That said, Napkin is right, he's not eligible until Sanderson.

I'm a pretty rabid golf fan, and thought I knew at least the name of every player on Tour and most of the Web.com Tour, especially those that have won a tournament, and I literally have no recollection of a Cody Gribble. Who the fuck is Cody Gribble, and how did he win a tournament? I suppose if he can do it, Rob should have a chance.

Cooled off after that hot start, going even par for the rest of the day. Finished at -2, tied for 32nd, and 2 shots ahead of the cut, 4 back of the leaders. This is a big week for him. With the top 70 guys in the world off at the WGC event, these are the tournaments he really needs to make some hey, and earn points/money. Hopefully, he has a good day tomorrow, makes the cut comfortably, and then let's see what happens on the weekend.

Bet him at 55/1 as he sort of fits the profile of guys who win during swing season and have him on draftkings so followed pretty closely

He grinded it out pretty well. He made big shots on his 9th and 14th to save par, a long putt on his 9th and a chip from the fringe on 14th after making a mess of the par 5. No real putting mishaps, too bad he missed that 7 or 8 footer to save on the last par 3. Goes out in the morning tomorrow, typically a little easier so he’s looking real good to make the cut.

20th in the field in strokes gained approach, so the strength of his game in good shape so far this week. Would be nice if he got hot with the putter.

Started off even on the front but just birdied 10 again and crushed a drive on the par 5 11th so maybe that'll get him going on the back....

Very happy to see him make the cut. After a bit of a layoff, never really know what you're going to get first time out. If he can find the form he had right before the layoff, he'll be playing a lot of weekends this year. Only a few shots out of the top 10 right now. If he finds fairways, the putter will show up.
