I'm not a goalie guy but you guys scare me. I don't like worrying about the position so I'm taking a guy who can hang out back there until 2033ish. He's turned a corner this year in his age 21 season and is still cheap, so I like that.

The goalie run is about going dry, so to avoid having to have someone like Malcom Subban as my starter......as much as it pains me to pick him.......

Goalies are overrated. I'll find my Binnington later. Need to complete my top D pair with some size and more PIMS. Cup Checks select Joel Edmundson, D Carolina Hurricanes

Between here and everywhere.
Time to round out my starting line-up.

Not everyone needs to provide top end offense. We also need someone who can lower the boom and shut down the other team when the time comes. Again, my team is young, dynamic, and WILL win now and in the future.

That being said, at 23 years old - he may already be the best defenseman on a team with a HOF'er, and a future HOF'er. Charlie Bright Lites gets all the pub, but

BRANDON CARLO, D, BOSTON BRUINS

is going to make an amazing pairing with Thomas Chabot - and is going to be a long term stud on my back line.

My opening night lineup

Alex Debrincat / Elias Pettersson / Mitch Marner
Brandon Carlo / Thomas Chabot
Igor Shesterkin

Tuukka Rask, G, BOS - Best goalie in all of hockey

He's available right? I've tripled checked. Are you guys all high/drunk in isolation? He's the best goalie in hockey.

I thought about it but even in this completely hypothetical exercise I didn't want to have to worry about replacing him in a couple years.

I played against a team in men’s league called Tuukka Dump. Took me a bit to get it but seems appropriate in light of recent revelations from Chara.

It appears in TheRealness's gloating about taking Rask, he forgot to PM me ;)

The PSKs are populating their second line with a top notch second line center, who is a cheap asshole to boot - C Anthony Cirelli

Svechnikov - Seguin - Kucherov
----------------- - Cirelli - --------------

Josi - Ellis

A real nice pick at this point. I was thinking about him if he got to my spot, but I think his next contract is going to be too much for the Penny Pincher's tastes (and for his actual level of production...he's not a true #1 center, even if he's forced into that role because of the relative dearth of high end talent around him).

So there's a 25 year old RD who plays all situations, is part of one of the best defensive teams in the league, will chip in over 40 points, mostly at even strength and only has a cap hit of $2 million this season? Yes please.

With the youth of my early picks I'm trending more toward leadership. 91 points each of the last two years, team captain for years, and played an integral role in bringing a Cup to Boston in 2011. For now I'll slot him in on the left side, but he normally plays RW and can be moved around.

Blake Wheeler, LW, Jets

Wheeler - Giroux - Pastrnak
XXX - Kopitar - XXX

Hughes - DeAngelo

The first post in the thread is up to date with all the picks (I hope).

I originally searched for a guy to fill out my top forward line, but while I had a few candidates, none of them really blew me away. So I pivoted to trying to find a top defensive pairing with Dahlin, only to see @NYCSox had snagged one of my top two options out from under me. Luckily, that left one available so I'm pouncing. Like his partner Dahlin, this guy is stuck on a terrible team, but unlike Dahlin's his team does him no favors at all. They play him huge minutes. They play him in all situations. They play him predominantly in his own zone. He's his teams #4 scorer, despite this being his first full season in the NHL. A high skill player with good awareness, who plays much more physical than his size, he should complement the Penny Pincher's elitely skilled top line quite well, while also giving them a goal scoring threat from the blue line. Don't 100% want to keep working on my backline but there are a couple of guys out there that I can't pass up. With that, I'm selecting Aaron Ekblad, D. Former number 1 pick who had a great rookie year but has gone through some struggles over the last couple of years. That said, he appears to be turning a corner this year and is still on 24. He's losing PP time to Yandle but is still putting up decent production, with 23 points in 5 v 5 over the last 47 games, second only to Josi even with a bunch of d-zone starts. From all indications, he's solid in his own end as well and certainly has the size to be a shutdown guy and take some pressure of Pietrangelo moving forward. Very right shot heavy in my defensemen but like the talent on there.

This is a really good pick at this point in the draft. I think we have a group bias against age (sans Felix) but Wheeler is a hell of a player to get this late.

Thanks. I like a mix of age on my team, but the guy is still only 32 and producing at a high level. Tough to turn down there.

Good pick. He was my other option with Pulock once Carlo was taken.

My next two picks are a bit odd, I admit. I need a goalie before a real run reduces my ability to choose one of the very few eligible goalies (crappy as they are, I need to take one soon). So, without further delay:

MikeMikeMike! chooses:

Mikael Backlund - C. Mikael brings some size, aggression, hands and some 2nd tier scoring, hovering between 45-53 points per year for the last several. He also wears an alternate captain letter, so it will be nice to have him in our leadership group.
Mikko Koskinen - G. What can I say? I need at least one goalie now. He's a career minor league but I'm going to wishful-think my way into believing that his numbers with Edmonton are because the team is crap and not because he's crap. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

The Red Wings have been a factory of sadness this year but there have been some bright spots. One of them is the continued development of Anthony Mantha, RW. Big bodied (6'5", 235 lbs) forward who drives a ton of possession on a historical awful team. He'll be 26 at the start of next season, so he's just starting to hit his prime. The biggest issue with him is injuries, which have limited him the last two seasons. Good news is this year's injury was only a punctured lung, so he should be back up and going soon. Could have him ride shotgun with either McDavid or Nylander depending on how things work out but, given his output with his current team, things can only go up.

The Penny Pinchers considered a number of players here, but ultimately had to go with a guy whose combination of production, age, and cheap contract made him too good to pass up. A guy who would be playing top line LW duty on almost any other roster, he's one of the best even strength goal scorers in the NHL (tied for #11 this year, #31 last year in his 2nd full season in the NHL) and is signed for another year at a bargain basement $3.35 million. Jeremy Jacob's Penny Pinchers complete their first line with Jakub Vrana, LW

There are a lot of good players left out there, this was the hardest decision so far. Could have gone a number of different ways but wanted to get a guy who can be physical and shut down the blue line to compare with my two young offensive defenseman. Welcome to the top pairing, Jacob Trouba, D, NYR
