Will everyone stuck at home and no sports on, it seems like there's enough interest in the game thread to pass some time by reviving the Real Fantasy draft we did ages ago. For those who weren't around, it's essentially putting all players into a pool and trying to draft a successful "real" team (as opposed to a run of the mill fantasy draft). Managers can choose how they want to build- young, old, win-now, etc. There's no real winner or loser, it was just a fun team-building exercise. I don't think back then we used a salary cap or anything, but I could be wrong. We can figure out new ground rules or parameters for how we want it to run. I'm guessing the thread for the original draft is lost in the clouds somewhere, but I'll see if I can dig it up.

I'm not sure we'll get 32 people for a full draft, but I think we can drum up enough interest to make it reasonably fun and challenging and not just super teams. People who posted interest in the game thread:

IN I was sure I had the best team and it ended up being very bad. Fabian Brunnstrom for the win. Cshea, it was 2008 that we did this (wow).

I'll see if I can find the old threads but they may have been lost.

I'd be open to salary cap restrictions this year but that may be more trouble than it's worth.

Added felix, burst and OGG to the list.

Yeah, it will probably end up being more complicated and bog things down. No cap would be fine with me.

Sure. Although I am home schooling my two kids as well as working on stuff for my students. So as long as we’re not shitty about deadlines, it will be fun.

All I remember about last time was having a few ferocious arguments (this was Pre advanced stat days) and being thrilled with my 3rd line C (name is one the tip of the tongue- killing me) because of his two way play, which set off another huge argument.

I'm in. I royally fucked up my first few picks the last time around, but improved in later rounds as I recall.

I drafted an all scumbag team last go-round. It was fun looking up players and reading their at-times awful stories. Plus, balancing personal scumbaggery with their play. I'll have to come up with another fun theme.

I think my team ended up being half decent last time around. I think I had Mike Richards who, if he was still playing, would fit in well on an all-scumbag team.

We're at 15 participants. See if we can get to 20?

I would love to play. Someone has to come in last and I will provide that service for all of you.

There's no scoring/judgement. It's purely a thought exercise for fun.

The whole point is to pass the time and we don't have an end point in sight (unfortunately) - no worries about deadlines.

(I was actually wondering if it was possible / how much of a pita it would be to take the final rosters and put them in NHL20 and sim a season or something like that. I don't have NHL20 which seems like it might be a hurdle to doing this.)

I was actually just thinking about this, but with Franchise Hockey Manager, the hockey sim from the makers of OOTP baseball.

I will do my best, though I haven't spent nearly as much time with FHM as OOTP, so it might take me a bit to get it in order.

I'm interested, but need to know more about the time commitment. Is this a "12 hours in one afternoon" or "we'll just try and get through a round a week in forum posts" commitment?

Hopefully we move somewhat quick but I wouldn't want to put anyone on the clock. There's no stakes or anything or any deadline to finish. This is for shits and giggles, just a fun time waster during the pandemic and NHL hiatus.

100% the latter. The whole point of this is to pass the time.

i think we did 8 hours last time and that worked pretty well. I agree, though, we shouldnt be super strict. One thing we did was you had to DM the person next on the list when you made your pick.

21 with thehitcat and rifan and a tentative amcghie. We’ll leave this open for a bit longer, but we’ve got a pretty strong group.

For the draft, do we want to aim towards filling out a full 23 man roster, or cut it to 20 (12 forwards, 6 D, 2 goalies)? Less? I floated a cap idea earlier but they may be tough to keep track of so I think I’d just go with no cap. Primary goal is having fun, not getting a headache. Might be fun at the end to seen the various team salaries.

In terms of players, I think we should stick to NHL/AHL/Prospects?

20 Players, we'd need to define the eligible pool but I say make it very broad because that's more fun.

I have not been able to resurrect the old threads (neither has Sumner) so I think those are officially lost. I just remember our team sucked.

I took Pavel Datsyuk at number 4. I remember that. I think it went Crosby, Ovi, Malkin, Datsyuk.

let's just make it anyone who has signed an NHL contract.

What's the best place to get the NHL contracts... I was looking at https://www.spotrac.com/nhl/boston-bruins/contracts/ -- figuring I would at least see some names that weren't necessarily on the 'big club' (Keyser). Any other thoughts? I'll probably take the 30 minutes of work and drop every team into a database to make it easier for myself later on.

Is my go-to for non roster information.
Edit:cshea wins by a hair.

The highlight of my hockey career was sharing a birthday with Bobby Orr. I also briefly dated his nextdoor neighbor.

He did sign an NHL contract. So is he eligible?

slightly serious point hidden there. But not fussed about the details. Just want to play.

also: team names?

I'm in. I don't know nearly as much about the current NHL as I used to, but to be fair the bar used to be set at knowing almost everything. This will be fun for me to get to know the edges of rosters.

I'm picking up extra overtime shifts at the county. I'm out. I'll follow along when I can though, really interested to see how this plays out.

This sounds fancy. Is it fancy? Will it help me understand who is on the third line of the Devils? If so I would love a copy...even if it's fancy.
Nah, just a glorified spreadsheet with more filtering capabilities-- so you could filter by position, team... if we wanted a cap salary.

I'll try to get a sample up today of the Bruins, and then post the link/solicit feedback.
