We join this one in progress. The heat of the summer and the coldness of the bats has everyone in the doldrums. Fans, players, coaches, everyone.

This too will pass. It would be wonderful if it passed sooner rather than later. Now is a good time.

Clownshow ump today. Rizzo gets plunked on a pitch inside and this guy decides that Rizzo didn't do enough to get out of the way. Stupid call.

And now Hicks decides to be part of the circus. Loses track of a ball hit to center and now a runner is on third.

He kind of flexed his thigh into the ball, I think maybe the right call.

I know what it looked like from the overhead, but I though he twisted his body a bit bringing his waist in but pushing he thigh out. If you think the ball is going to hit you higher up, I can understand a movement like that. I don't think he was getting out of the way regardless.

I disagree mainly because of Yarbrough's arm slot being so low and it was a slider that probably looked like it was going to go behind him before it broke right into his thigh.

As a Sox fan, my mind tells me I should be upset about the way this game is going but my heart feels happy.

Toronto loses again and the Yankees are still up 10 in the standings.

Unbelievable that the Yankees can play so bad for so long and still have a double digit lead halfway through August.

And look at Bal'more. They're right there with Tampa and Toronto. Fun times.

I have no idea why Rizzo got so upset, and this is definitely not a "clownshow" call.

He very clearly moves his leg into the path of the ball -- he's got his front leg well outside and intentionally moves it to block the ball. It's literally as obvious as the nose on his face.

(not sure why the gif isn't working)

He should have just shrugged his shoulders and gone back to the box. Just.... c'mon man. You tried, got caught, move on. Just lame. I've always really liked Rizzo and we have a mutual friend, but this soured me on him a bit.

Still 9 up somehow with 46 to play, in free fall but somehow not losing ground. That will change starting tomorrow though if they keep losing, all week head to heads with TB and TOR, both nine back now.

Now the gif is.

Anyway, all of this is to say that thinking you can cock your leg, then plant it outside, then move it inside to get hit... c'mon.
He had a little smirk too towards the ump, I think it was the right call.

I mean, it's very clearly the right call, albeit one that isn't called all the time. Rizzo's likely more upset that he didn't get the veteran call he's got in the past... but when you literally move your leg eight-twelve inches to get in the path of the pitch... just c'mon man.

Yeah, bullshit. A breaking pitch like that? I seriously doubt that Rizzo knew exactly where is was going to end up.

The pitch was off the plate and he started to pull his hips back and twist away from the ball.

Edit: If it was a straight fastball I'd agree. If we had a view either from Rizzo's perspective or a better one from the pitcher and could see how much (or little) that pitch broke, I'd be willing to reconsider. But sidearm delivery and a breaking pitch has to be tough to read. Seemed like Rizzo reacted a little late too.

10 up. Don’t get ahead of yourself! Going to take a lot of chicken and beer to put a real dent in that.

To quote you, “yeah, bullshit.” He literally moved from way outside to way inside, breaking pitch regardless. Even @jon abbey agrees with me. You can get mad about it, but Rizzo knew what he was doing. It’s really easy to see what happened in that gif. You’re still going to win the division, the Yankees will be just fine. Settle down. It’s so silly to even defend this, really: Rizzo tried to steal first. It’s admirable, and I don’t blame him. You’re likely tilted from the Yankees slide (despite that they’re going to win the East), so I totally get it. Be cool, man.

Yeah, whatever, this is crap. That call never gets made.

Sorry for missing the call to make the thread. Been keeping a bit of distance from this team lately.

I'm incredibly curious about this and haven't seen any reporting about why exactly they won't call people up. For how badly they have been playing for a long time now, I'm not sure why you wouldn't bring up reinforcements to try and jump start the team. Especially with the recent injuries.

It's hard to come up with rational reasons, it can't be that they don't believe in Peraza or they wouldn't have refused to offer him for Castillo with Volpe right behind him.

And right now they could bring up any 2 of Peraza/Cabrera/Florial without doing anything irrevocable, they would just have to send down Andujar/Locastro and all three of those guys are already on the 40 man. It would certainly energize the fan base, hopefully the team too.

It's also on TBS, but I expect you don't get cable.
I do, it’s blacked out in the NYC area.

And to be clear, I do get Amazon Prime but it’s annoying to try to watch not in real time as I prefer, plus I’m semi-boycotting this team until they wake up.

3 run HR for Arozarena in the 1st, that’s a week of runs for NY at this point.

He is mid-game in St Paul, MN right now and has not been pulled, so we’ll see how accurate that is. The time for moves was before yesterday’s games but better late than never.

Meanwhile, Florial has cooled off recently in AAA, he was crushing a few weeks ago (so was Andujar, to be fair).

Actually if they bring up Florial and not Peraza or Cabrera, that would be almost as bad as not doing anything. The latter two are both red hot, Florial is not.

Judge with a shot here, rooting for a Judge walk/Rizzo HR/Chapman save.
