Instead of rehashing the usual, lets drum up some Sox trivia.

I was looking at Bob Stanley's 1978 season. He had 15 wins - only 2 of which were in games he started.

So who has the greatest number of relief wins for the Sox in a single season? (I don't know, BTW, just thought it was an interesting question to start with.)

Speaking of Bob Stanley, I was at a WooSox game about two weeks ago, and they introduced him to the crowd. I think I was the only person in the crowd booing. People were looking at me weird. I was like, "What's wrong with YOU? That's Bob Stanley!"

Dick Radatz in 1964: 16-9 with 29 saves in 79 relief appearances (zero starts).

MLB record is Roy Face in 1959 for the Pirates: 18-1 in 57 relief appearances.

I have fond memories of my grandmother shaking her fist at the TV and trying not to swear in front of the grandkids. I have the clearest memory of her voice saying, "Bob Stanley - you bum!"

Is this really random? Because, if so, right now Orsillo is calling a Padres game being aired on mlbn, and he just told his partner that he is going to "train" before spring training: batting, running, throwing, in order to be in shape. He's going to show some people some things. He didn't seem entirely to be joking. (You must admit, that IS trivial.)

My first guess was going to be Bill Campbell who had 13 wins to go along with his 31 saves in 1977.

Also, he's about 30 years old in the photo below. Talk about high usage rate.

Classic Red Sox trivia questions that most everyone knows:

Who was the starting 2B for the Red Sox on Opening Day, 1967?

Who was the last non-catcher to catch in a game for the Red Sox?

Who was the visiting outfielder that was berated so badly by Red Sox that he had to leave the field?

Who were the final three batters for the Red Sox in Game 7 of the 1975 World Series?

Who was the relief pitcher who was on the Red Sox active roster for one day in 2004, thereby earning a WS ring without ever appearing in a game?

How many Red Sox rookies exceeded 200 hits in their first full season?
Nomar and Pesky ... 2?

The OP reminds me of when Stan Belinda won double digit games in the unexpected 95 division title season. Made the AS team IIRC.

Digging into the memory bank, and not at all certain, I’ll go with:

Reggie Smith was the opening day 2B in 1967.

Mike Greenwell caught an inning in extras in the late 1980s. I was at the game.

Jim Eisenreich, the CF for the Twins who had Tourette’s Syndrome, was mocked so loudly and mercilessly by the paying customers in the bleachers he had to leave the fiel.

Bob Stanley is an interesting case of a guy who I grew up thinking was terrible, but was actually a pretty damn good pitcher. He certainly didn’t look like an athlete and his style of pitching looks like a different sport from pitchers today.

Jack Clark is another guy who I thought was lousy because he hit .249 for the Sox. But he actually had a 249/374/466 line his first year for the Sox, good for a 127 OPS+. I recall folks being disappointed about him from the get go. His final year for the Sox was bad but that first year was pretty good!

That year was so fun- so many unexpectedly good performances from guys who were on the team for a short period of time. Belinda, Luis Alicea, Matt Stairs, Willie McGee….Wakefield with a ridiculous year, and I was always a big Canseco fan.

3-for-3 (although there might have been another non-catcher that slipped my memory) which is good enough to submit the next question

Here are the other 2 answers

The final three batters in Game 7 of the 75 Series were pimnch-hitters Juan Beniquez and Bob Montgomery, followed by Yaz

The one-day Red Sox pitcher who didn't get into a game but got a ring was Brandon Puffer, who even showed up for the ceremony in 2005

Erik Hanson had a great year too. Then Mo and Jose went like 1-27 in the ALDS. Sad trombone.

iirc, Hanson had some injury where he was only throwing like two pitches the whole year, right?

That game 1 in Cleveland still haunts me. It’s crazy those Indian teams never won a WS

The Red Sox in 1912 were World Series Champions over the New York Giants. Slightly lesser known than this is that they won in a walkoff in Game 8; the only such instance of a Game 8 walkoff World Series win.

Providing Smoky Joe Wood with the win in relief, and Mathewson the complete, 9.2 IP loss: Name the two runners that scored in the bottom of the 10th. Hint: The first of the two to score reached on Snodgrass’ Muff.

Yaz made the last out in the 1975 WS and the 1978 one-game playoff with the MFYs. Broke my young heart.

Who is the last Red Sox pitcher to throw a complete game, give up no hits, and lose? Which Red Sox player made his MLB debut in that game?

Yes! Young had a mental block about throwing to bases. I think he went a full season without a pick-off attempt. Flaherty ended up playing 14 years and catching in more than 1,000 games.

The two Red Sox runners who scored in the 10th inning of the eighth game of the 1912 World Series were Clyde Engle pinch hitting for Smoky Joe Wood and second baseman Steve Yerkes. Thanks to Glenn Stoudt and Richard Johnson Red Sox Century.

Here's one: who was the last Red Sox pitcher to start and win two games with only two days rest between them?

Dan Duquette deserves mucho credit for building that team out of lots of flotsam and jetsam. Mookie's uncle played on that team. What's his name?

A note about Bob Stanley, since he's been mentioned more than a few times:

Good guy! He was the coach of Hamilton-Wenham's JV team in a game that I pitched; a complete game somehow. But it was raining, pouring down at times. And Bob Stanley was there drying off baseballs with a towel all game. Every time a ball went out of play or it just got too wet, he'd zing a dried one to me on the mound, saying, "Here ya go Big Guy."

His son was on the HW team, which is why Stanley was coaching, but he went out of his way to help me in that game. My own coach didn't do shit.

Good lord, Willie McGee a good candidate for "Forgot they were a Red Sox" ...
