Former Red Sox infielder Steve Lyon is joining NESN as a Red Sox studio analyst, the network announced Thursday. Lyons’ first appearance will be during NESN’s two-and-a-half hour pregame show prior to Fenway Park’s Opening Day on Friday.

“We are thrilled to have Steve join our team of veteran studio analysts,” NESN’s vice president of programming and production Joseph Maar said. “He brings incredible passion, experience, candor and depth of knowledge about Major League Baseball along with a familiarity with Boston as both a player and a broadcaster.”

Lyons played nine seasons in the major leagues with four different teams including four stints in Boston and is a three-time national Emmy award-winning broadcaster. Drafted in the first round by the Red Sox in 1981 out of Oregon State, he is one of only three players to play all nine positions in one game at the major league level.

Interesting.  I always thought of him more as a color guy, hem, hem.  Too bad that spot is filled here, hem, hem.

I've been wondering for years (before the Remy health and family issues) what they would do when Remy retires.  If this is any indication, Red Sox will be hard to watch when Remy steps aside. Hope they limit him to pre/post duties even when Remy needs time off this season, use other people for games.  Not sure I could sit through 3 hours of Lyons.

I can see NESN building towards a point where their studio analysts rotate through the booth as well.  So for some games, we'd get Eck.  Others might be Lyons.  Still others might be Wake or *shudder* Rice.  Fingers crossed that they add Pedro to that mix, too.  That would be one way to replace Remy without putting all their eggs in the wrong basket.  Eventually maybe the guy to do it full time will emerge.

I caught both DLowe and Wake doing Spring Training games with Orsillo. Both did a competent job, I thought. DLowe might have been the better of the two.

The introductory graphics for Game Day Live where they tout analysts' credentials ought to be entertaining:

Eckersley: "BASEBALL HALL OF FAMER!!"

Rice: "COOPERSTOWN, BITCHES!!"

Lyons: "uhhhh..."

At least when Wakefield did studio work for NESN he had the "2 rings! 200 wins!" thing going for him.

Over/under on how many times we see Lyons taking his pants down at first base?  I'd put it at 2.5 just for tomorrow's broadcast.

Apparently this isn't just a trial balloon stint like the ones Matt Stairs and others have had...

It's official. I'm proud to announce I've signed a multi year contract to go back to my roots. The World Champs!

Stairs got a trial stint only because he had just so recently retired and was new to broadcasting. It makes sense that Lyons could manage to get a longer contract. He has been a broadcaster for a long time and is a known commodity. Now, that doesn't make him a good broadcaster; he sucks actually. From my recollection of listening to Lyons over the years he does two things that annoy me:

1) He is kind of the "wacky" guy who thinks he is funnier than he actually is. This has gotten him in trouble a few times in his career. http://en.wikipedia...remarks_while_broadcasting
2) He overly relies on cliches and old guard buzzwords - "wanting it more", "the will to win", etc...

Actually there are four players who have accomplished this in a major league game, and Lyons is not one of them.  I think Lyons might have done so in an exhibition game.  The four major league instances were by Bert Campaneris (1965), Cesar Tovar (1968), Scott Sheldon (2010), and Shane Halter (2010).

Talk about a group you don't want to be a part of!  Who the hell are those last two guys?

I recall growing up in the 80s and the big controversy that followed Lyons's attempt to steal third in the ninth inning of a one or two-run game with Boggs at bat, who was hitting around .400 at the time. Needless to say, Lyons was thrown out and the game ended. I think Lyons blamed the coaches for calling for the steal and Manager John McNamara blamed Lyons for going on his own. Soon after, Lyons was traded to the other Sox.

Oh, the 80s.

On Chad Finn's blog, Lyons blamed Marty Barrett.

Oh, yeah, that's easy to believe.

"I could hear Marty trying to whisper to me from 90 feet away, 'If you can get a good jump, go!' " Lyons recalls. "A double steal would have put the tying run on second. I didn't stop to think how bad the consequences would be if I got thrown out."

That's your story, Psycho, you stick to it.

In fairness I too, blame Marty Barrett for a majority of the bad things that have happened in my life.
