28 outs in a row to start a game is still pretty good, though.

Harvey Haddix did better than that. Pitching for the Pirates on May 26, 1959, he retired the first 36 Braves before Mantilla reached on an E5 leading off the bottom of the 13th, sacrificed to 2nd, IBB, double by Joe Adcock and he lost 0-1.

A Giants beat writer noted last night that Tim Lincecum the top story on SportsCenter, accompanied by the picture of Lincecum wearing the personalized USMNT soccer jersey, in the Gladiator helmet, doing that double-finger-raise thing that the Giants do. "The rest of America must be so confused," tweeted the writer. That made me laugh.

Vin Scully is amazing.  That guy can lay down the coolest stories interspersed with play by play.  He has seen it all.  I got the Dodger's games on my cable package.  Fortunate to have listened to him a long time.

It's minor league but the Wilmington Blue Rocks got a hit with one out in the 7th on the 25th, then were no-hit on the 26th and 27th before getting a hit with one out in the 2nd tonight.

Oh, thanks. I'd heard McCarver was doing some color man work, didn't know in what capacity. There is another thread for it, and I only heard a little, but he sounded just fine compared with Harold Reynolds.

Jake Arrieta up to no good in Boston.  Yeah it's early, but fuck it.  We need all the help we can get.

Edit: Plympton is faster than me.

Jake Arrieta has a no-hitter through five  A NO-HITTER.  He'll be lucky to get by Mookie a couple more times, but maybe he can do it.  I also just picked him up on 3 fantasy teams and this is his first start for me in them, so I figure that's a good sign too.

A NO-HITTER.

Actually, Adcock homered but passed Aaron on the base paths and settled for a double. Not sure what the confusion was on Hank's part. Have to look it up.

Edit: Aaron thought it hit off the wall. Mantilla, who reached on the error, scored and Hank ran off the field, thinking game was over.

Link to greatest game ever pitched. (I listened to final three innings with my dad, a Pirates fan.):

I had forgotten about the lost home run and I think I caught the end of the game, too. I'm not sure it is the greatest game ever pitched, though. On May 1, 1920, the Brooklyn Robins were hosted by teh Boston Braves and the game was called as a 1-1 tie after 26 innings. Both starters (Leon Cadore--BKN and Joe Oeschger--BSN) both went all the way. It's hard not to hold those performances in high regard. Btw, game time was 3+50.
