That was crazy, Mike Trout is trying not to tear up too much right now while being interviewed on MLBN.

Has there been any indication of how he died at all? I know the autopsy isn’t coming back until October and I don’t want to hear about that bullshit newspaper report but I would’ve thought something would be said by now, like if he had a condition or something. So sad.

where the darn libs live
Honestly trying to come up something like this Angels performance tonight and I can think of Favre after his pop died, IT4 going for 33, Piazza's walk off after 9/11, and Steve Gleason's blocked punt after Katrina. But this was different because it was about a teammate. That was incredible.

My buddy has season tickets for the Angels and he sent me videos during and after the game. Fans at a tribute to Skaggs outside the stadium bawling their eyes out. It's unreal.

“The last time there was a combined no-hitter in the state of California? Orioles-A's in Oakland on July 13, 1991 - the same day Tyler Skaggs was born.”

The Dee Gordon home run in the José Fernandez game was very improbable and very emotional, but maybe not as improbable as this.

Ed: but pretty improbable

None of those measure up. This is insane, both because it isn’t just about individual performance, but also because of the randomness involved in baseball. How many balls in play were there?

I'd add Nava's game winning home run in the first home game after the marathon bombing.

This is the sort of thing that just gives you chills and goosebumps.

What an accomplishment by the Angels. The moment of the year and highly unlikely to be topped.

I was in the gym early this morning and watching Sportscenter. They showed the highlights from last night and damn if I didn't start tearing up. Couldn't have been scripted any better.

It fascinates me how long these reports take give current technology.

This seems like a good place for Dee Gordon’s quote:
“I got one thing to say and I said it three years ago and I’m going be done with it,” Gordon said. “If you don’t believe in God, you might want to start. I said it three years ago when I hit the homer for Jose. They had a no-hitter today. Y’all better start. That’s all I got.”

Obviously we have a difference of opinion, but while the odds of this one happening are objectively a bit longer ( I think...I didn't do the math) and this was more of a team effort, I think it is a lot like the others, such as Gordon, Thomas, Favre. There's some aspect of hyper-focus that can be sometimes harnessed in the face of tragedy.

I'm not sure that first pitch wasn't the most impressive piece of all of this. That might be the best first pitch I've ever seen.

I have no clue where this game ranks in terms of remarkable outcomes after a tragedy but its just incredibly awesome. Sports, at their best, give those participating and watching the opportunity to inspire and uplift rather than just distract from real life issues.

This particular game, including all of the events around it, did all of that and then some.

Yes, please can we stop debating the awesomeness quotient here? It's an amazing moment, and a numerologist's field day

19. Using the combined xBA Savant gives, the odds of those 19 balls in play having a net batting average of .000? 1 in 6974.

I think of all the amazing moments though, numbers be damned, this is more incredible than Favre, IT4, John Wall and supporting a cancer stricken little girl, Jordan on Father’s Day to beat the Sonics, Chris Paul’s 61 for 61 years of his grandfather’s life...you can’t top this. Even in the other dugout, you have a guy like Gordon who was there and a huge moment in the Fernandez game. It is a moment, or perhaps a series of them, defined by visual observation rather than word of mouth.

Second all time combined no-hitter where the last pitcher went more than four innings. The other one is pretty famous too.

Red Sox 4, Senators 0 -- June 23, 1917
Babe Ruth (0 IP), Ernie Shore (9 IP)
It’s probably the most famous opening to any no-hitter. Ruth, in his fourth season as an ace pitcher for Boston, got himself ejected for arguing balls and strikes after walking leadoff man Ray Morgan. Morgan was caught stealing after Shore’s very first pitch, and the righty retired the next 26 batters he faced for a most improbable no-hitter.

Perfecto ended by error.
Yeah, Tatis threw one away to start the inning, then a double play, then a walk, then a ball to Hosmer that he stopped but booted. Paddack didn't cover though, so Hosmer had to dive for the runner and they called him out and then out on replay even though I think he was safe.

Bottom line, no-hitter intact through 6 at 76 pitches, but Paddack hasn't been allowed to go past 97 pitches this year.

Mike Leake perfect through six against the Angels on just 55 pitches.

Through 8, just 76 pitches.

Leake's last start was also against the Angels, in that one he got knocked out in the first and the Angels threw the combined no-hitter. Baseball is crazy.

Teams to be the last to have allowed a goose egg in the column adjacent to the R column, and then have themselves on the flip side loss in the next such occurrence, which would’ve been the Angels tonight:

1908 White Sox (9/20, 10/2)
1908-10 Indians (10/2/08 and 4/20/10, 5/12/10)
1944 Braves (4/27, 5/15)
1948, 1950 Dodgers (9/9, 8/11)
1951 Indians (7/1, 7/12)
1962 Angels (5/5, 6/26)
1963 Astros (5/17, 6/15)
1968 Giants (9/17, 9/18–both times against St. Louis)
1969 Reds (4/30, 5/1–same team both games, Houston)
1973 Royals (4/27, 5/15)
1978 Cardinals (4/16, 6/16)
1990-91 Blue Jays (9/2, 5/1)
1991 White Sox (8/11, 8/26)

1883 Blues 1891 Giants, 1897-8 Reds, 1906 Superbas (Dodgers), 1938, 1940 Indians, 1964 Phillies had the reverse (no hit, then had league’s next nono or perfect game), with the latter game for the Phils as Bunning’s perfecto. The last team this applied to? 1965-66 Cleveland. Anyone here recall Dave Morehead’s effort? Genuinely, since it’s the first half of that Tribe duo.

And so this list shall stay...
