question: can mlb review tabata, overturn the hbp, call it a strike, and award a perfect game?

Hard to blame the ump there ... Nobody was expecting it, and it was obvious to me only on replay

Saw umps negate a HBP when Don Drysdale was trying to set the all time record consecutive scoreless innings streak in 19 oh a million years ago. Batter stood there, got hit, and went to first, bases loaded, run came home, and the ump said no way Jose.

So It can and has been done

SUCH a doshbag move by tabata, I bet he played for the yankees once. ( had to do it)

Hes going to get thrown at tomnmorrow, alot.

From Wiki....

. Umpires rarely make this call. A famous instance of a non-hit by pitch was on May 31, 1968, when Don Drysdale hit Dick Dietz with a pitch that would have forced in a run and ended Drysdale's scoreless innings streak at 44. Umpire Harry Wendelstedt ruled that Dietz made no effort to avoid the pitch; Dietz proceeded to fly out, and Drysdale's scoreless streak continued to a then-record 582⁄3 innings.[4]

Good thing ump negated it ... For the batter. Drysdale was 250 lbs -- huge then -- of snarling old school

Scherzer has retired 54 of the last 57 batters he's faced.  Would be 54/56 if not for Tabata's douche move.

It was a very sneaky move. He didn't move laterally toward the plate, which would haveade it more obvious. He moved his arm down.

And Tabata had an advantage. He knew once it got to 2 balls that Scherzer did not want to go to 3 and 2. That enabled him to hang in there. the decent thing to do was bail on that pitch.

don't feel as awful now -- the girl was actually at the zoo, not the baseball game. this calls into question whether or not we should keep on dating...

i don't think bunting is as bad in a no-no as people make it out to be. it's dick, yes, but it's within the rules.

this, per rules, should've been called a ball.

just enforce the goddamn rule.

Total class by Scherzer in post game, praising Pirates for going after him at the plate.

Jim Joyce not even in today's crew. But can you imagine Joyce behind the plate? Actually, it'd be amazing if he then called it a ball and preserved the perfecto. Whimsical thought. But no such Hollywood ending.

Seeing the Tabata HBP, his gigantic elbow pad caused it, it adds a few inches to his arm.

The pussy wouldn't have done it without the protection

Loved the comment by the tweeter about it being a Bad News Bears move.  Rudy Stein lives!

They have to sit Tabata tommorow, he'll catch a ball to the face.

He doesn't start for them at all, I think he has 32 AB on the season in a little over a month.

I think they should play him so the rest of the team doesn't get it taken out on them.

Not only did I pass up a chance to see yesterday's game but I also had my own perfect game going on Playstation and the bastard quit in the 7th inning

That they didn't do anything after the fact for the Armando Galarraga perfecto is the clearest indicator that MLB will always steer clear of post-game reversals. That was the most cut and dry case, with no ambiguity as to whether any results later in the game would be impacted, and they chose to do nothing. Even if they felt Tabata leaned into the pitch in this game, best case scenario is that pitch is a ball and then it's a 3-2 count.

Here
No ump ever calls the lean in, so he did the right thing not doing it there. If the Nationals want to get a bit of revenge, I wouldn't blame them, however.

Speaking of revenge, Tabata in today's lineup. He's gotta get one in the ribs, right?

I wonder what Clint Hurdle thinks of this 26 year old chump. Probably fine with the kid taking one for his misdeeds.

I don't think so. Classy guy that he is, Scherzer gave Tabata a complete pass, suggested he'd have done the same thing.

With an avalanche of injuries already this season, Nats don't need a beanball war to close out a series that has not gone well for the Pirates.

I think team inclined to take lead from Scherzer, rather than descend to Showalter level assholery that could hurt much bigger plans.

Scherzer said the right thing but that doesn't mean his brother pitchers don't have to.

I'd let him know about it right away if it was me on the mound. It's part of the game. NO ONE on the Pirates should get mad either. Wear it like you did yesterday Tabata.

nearly 24 hours later, i'm finding it hard to blame tabata. was it a dick move? sure. but there's a rule to negate it, and it simply wasn't called. fin.

Beg to differ. Showalter has Kevin Gregg plunk Papi because Papi is having a great year.

Nats would be plunking Tabata because he's a 26-year-old nobody who pulled a bush-league move to prevent a respected veteran from becoming the 24th person in history to achieve a feat. With 8 2/3 in the books on top of that.

Don't aim at his head. But plunk this punk.

Nats handled it the right way...for now. Everybody expected retaliation. The Nats have too much at stake right now. They don't need suspensions or injuries. That doesn't mean one isn't coming in the ribs at some point down the road.

Scherzer threw a bad pitch.  There've been only 24 perfect games for a reason.

How much do you think pitchers care about "things" in such a case. I mean, as common as they are now, wouldn't it almost be cooler to be a guy who went 9 and didn't get it? Maybe not. But doing that is more novel and likely to be noted than doing something that, oh, six guys did in 2012.

Oops. Just realized it's an upper-case T thing. Yeah, you want that.

Holt fucking shit what a catch.

I know, it's not as great as the catch Jeter made where he caught the ball and ran 10 steps before launching himself into the stands, but still ...
