He’s played 16 games the past 2 plus years, and he plays RB.

Not sure this is good value for SF, but he’s a game changer if - big if - he’s healthy, and Lynch and Shanahan need to break through with this core within the next year or two.

It gives JG another short-range outlet, which could be a plus.

CMC is under contract for the next three seasons at roughly $12M per year. The Panthers have a $18.3M dead cap hit for CMC’s unamortized signing bonus and restructuring charges.

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/carolina-panthers/christian-mccaffrey-21749/

The Panthers won’t be competitive before 2024 at the earliest, so this is a nice way for them to use cap space during rebuilding years to buy picks to draft guys who will be ready to contribute by the time the Panthers are ready to compete, by which time CMC will almost certainly be toast (if he isn’t already).

More importantly, they have the ability to line up CMC and Deebo on the field at the same time and nobody will know what the fuck the play call will be.

This is really interesting.

Insane to me what the Niners are doing here.

The Shanahan system is world famous for being able to create running backs out of thin air. Countless number of late round guys have been productive or Pro Bowlers in this scheme.

Are the Niners really a CMC away from a Super Bowl? Will CMC play enough games to make a difference? I don’t think so. They’re 26th in rushing DVOA and CMC is 13th, so they could use a boost there, but this feels like an overpay for missing on the last couple of drafts.

You thought the Dolphins were getting CMC, didn't you?

I don't disagree with you, but this also sounds eerily close to what Brady would do with no name WRs in the Patriots system and then in 2007 they dropped in Randy Moss.

As someone with almost no vested interest in the NFC West, I'm kind of excited to see how this turns out.

Lol, no. Raheem Moestert, former Niner and current Dolphin, is currently 10th in rushing DVOA and Miami is 15th in rushing DVOA.

The difference is Miami’s passing attack is better than SF’s and they aren’t nearly as reliant on the run as the traditional Shanahan system.

I thought teams were moving past investing draft capital into the RB position. Sure CMC is great, but that seems like a really poor use of 4 picks. There are certain positions I understand paying the price for (CB,LT,EDGE,etc) but RB seems near the bottom of the list of positions that are worth it

They are definitely paying a star price for a guy who may not be that on a consistent basis anymore; but for SF I think it’s worth the risk. See if they can finally break through with this group. NFC West has some fun front offices.

Bills fan here who is really pumped that someone else spent all those picks on CMC. Fun player, but no thanks to the cap hit/picks lost for a RB who can't play a full season.

The Niners can never keep their RBs healthy and CMC is always hurt; it's a match made in heaven!

That's easy. It'll be a pass to Kyle Juszczyk.

Did the Pats get a 3rd rounder compensation pick for McDaniels?

Google says no. 3rd round compensation is only for minority coaches who leave for promotions elsewhere.
He’s the wrong color. They’re compensation picks to encourage diversity-based hires

After seeing this haul (at least I think it's a haul), I wonder if Joe Schoen is kicking himself that the Giants aren't something like 3-3 compared to 5-1 considering Barkley could get probably get a similar pull from someone.

I can't imagine the Giants will trade Barkley with the way their season has gone. But they're still another year or two away of drafts and free agency to consistently be in a great place.

Probably not early picks. But a little surprising the Bills didn’t top whatever the Niners offered.
I am not surprised - the Bills are a well run organization and well run organizations don't do this.

Well said. Agreed.

Saw this on Twitter:

Trading the 30th overall draft capital for a 12m dollar running back who has a long injury history. I hate this trade from a resource allocation, team building, and risk management perspective. I don't care how weak the NFC is this year. The 49ers have about 27m in cap space next year and only 33 guys rostered. They likely need anywhere from 3-5 offensive linemen alone. Blowing money AND picks on an RB when you don't need to is a self-inflicted wound. CMC could be great with them if healthy but spending this much on an RB is a waste. Hate this trade for SF.

This feels like a trade fantasy football fans get excited about but then you step back and remember that’s a ton of draft capital for an often injured RB in 2022.

Schefter: Here’s some of the consistency that SF hopes to get with Christian McCaffrey: Kyle Shanahan is in his 6th year as 49ers’ HC and the Niners have had a different leading rusher in each of his first five seasons. The 49ers haven’t had a 1,000-yard rusher since Frank Gore in 2014.
That's because his RBs always get hurt.

And now McCaffrey will get hurt. And Shanahan is an asshole. Ok, so Wilson, who has really good numbers this year, (80 carries, 500 yards, 5.0 per rush) fumbled last week against Atlanta in the first quarter. He was basically benched for the rest of the game. Tevin Coleman had 4 rushes for 3 yards the rest of the game and SF got annihilated by Atlanta because they didn't have their main RB in the game because Shanahan is bigger than the team.

Shanahan runs an incredible offense, his ability to take RBs and turn them into Roger Craig is impressive. But he seems like a douche and guys are always in his dog house.(Aiyuk last year, famously) Fuck your house Shanny, you're not Bill Belichick. I also don't understand this desire to punish your starters if they fumble. It forces a team to completely throw out their game plan. Is the implication that RBs are looking to fumble and need to be reminded it's bad?

I'm angry about this b/c I'm in a picks pool and I had SF and if they won the wager, I would have won the week. It was the one swing game I had versus the top guy.

Not my team so I’m good with this from the pure entertainment perspective. The Niners better hope that Jimmy G stays healthy rest of the year because it would be a huge waste to have all this talent and Brock Purdy leading them.

It'd be great to see the 49ers win it all this year with Jimmy G and then have another shit show of an offseason for entertainment purposes.

Ah yes, paragon of health Raheem Mostert who has topped 70 yards five times since 2019.
I think you’re missing the point of the post.

Raheem Mostert cost Miami next to nothing. He’s playing more snaps and better than Chase Edmonds, the running back they signed as “their guy” in free agency.

CMC is a wild overpay for a guy that currently isn’t more valuable according to DYAR and DVOA than the guy that SF let walk to Miami.

Didn't Ditka sell all his draft picks when they got Ricky Williams a while back?
That was also when Ricky was a rookie, had his entire career ahead of him, and was the most productive running back in the history of college football. (Not that it justifies the trade)

CMC is none of those things, but might still be a decent player if he can stay healthy.

I'm not sure McCaffrey is an over-the-top acquisition for San Fran, but the NFC is pretty terrible so I don't mind someone making an all-in type move.

As a niners fan I’ll note that I’m excited about this.

With the comp picks (and again, I can almost guarantee Demeco Ryans will become a head coach this off-season and more comp picks will come — as the niners seem to be a funnel for minority coaches), I really think this won’t hurt as bad draft wise as for a team that needs to rebuild.

Niners just extended their entire starting LB core (Warner and greenlaw) have 2 long term db contracts (ward and.. ward), have spent a ton of draft capital on the DL (though they need to extend Bosa this offseason and that will be pricey) and have a no. 1 receiver locked up long-term (Samuel). They also have Trent Williams on a long term contract and are only weak at C right now on the O line. They’ll have the cap space to address that.

CMC isn’t a rental, he’s locked up for 3 years as well, so this is a move for this year and the next couple with a contending core of players.

I’m not sure they need the draft capital this year (and starting in 2024 draft they have all their picks except a 5th rounder).

Lastly, they can easily afford this because of the starting QB being on a rookie contract after this year. Of course Lance might be terrible and it all goes to hell. But Lance is already the plan and surrounding him with talent can only help.
