Up until the point where he actually harms another human being or their livelihood, where he becomes an actual detriment to society (or maybe if he is poisoning the team's chemistry), I don't give a shit about a player's personality. Sure, they can gain some bonus points for being easy to like (Ortiz ascends from demigod to god status, maybe, e.g.). But if a guy glowers and barks at the media/Twitter but also throws 6 shutout against the Astros...the latter completely wipes out the former in my ledger.
Plus, even if Price is a prick, and I’m not saying he is at all, I think the dude has earned the right to tell people to go fuck themselves. He’s taken an endless amount of shit for having subpar performances in the postseason and now he’s shut those people up in back to back starts in a most impressive fashion. If I were him, I’d be telling all those people to blow me. He’s a fierce competitor who, by all accounts, is loved by his teammates. I’m glad to have him on the Red Sox.

sure, I like rooting for players who are likable and have nice personalities. How do you pick your favorite players...just by their stats?
How do you know what Price's "personality" is? All you see is him talking to a group of people that have generally been rude to him the entire time he's here. Its like seeing him knock a fleeing purse-snatcher out cold on the street and concluding that he's a violent guy.

Shockingly, first and foremost, by what they do on the field.

As a secondary consideration, some players have toxic off the field personalities, and so I'm not so much of a fan of those guys. Other guys seem exceptionally praiseworthy, so I'll pull for them, even if they're not the best players.

Stats are a byproduct of the first consideration.

I usually end up really liking the guys that piss off fans like you. And stats, that too.
He doesn't piss me off, but after listening to him in his pressers, I just don't find him likable. That doesn't mean I don't want him to go out and pitch well.

Other than not liking it here for some reason, can anyone give a legitimate reason why Price would opt out? He’s not likely to make more money on a new contract than what he’s currently on.

Only other possibilities are similar money to be close to home, preferred pitching coach, etc. I don’t see it really happening either, but it happens. Either way, I’m sure the Sox are prepared for any contingencies.

We'll see but I'm old enough to remember Keith Foulke getting booed 7 months after risking his career for our enjoyment.
This is typical. Yaz had a couple of down years (for him) in the early- and mid-70's, and he would get booed mercilessly when he came to the plate.

Price looked right to me

Very happy with his performances these last few games. Really stepped it up

That smile on his face when he came off the mound was awesome

Congrats David!

Boston sports hero forever, everyone wanted him to be Jon Lester, I think he just was. Can't wait for him to get the loudest ovation in history when they introduce him on ring day next year. The media may hate him, but it's obvious his teammates all love him and I couldn't be happier for him.

I agree. I think Price deserved the MVP, especially after all the nonsense he's endured. Still, tip of the cap to Pearce who came up huge in his time in Boston. He did it first against the Yankees and now on the biggest stage.

Thanks to you, Lord David Price. What else can you say? He shut everyone up, me included (he broke the long Curse of Jon Lester). He has the Yankees hump to overcome, but he probably will and even if not he’s a playoff legend here forever.

Go play Fortnite for a fortnight, you big lug. Just make sure that carpal tunnel is good to go by April.

Finding the change up changed the outcome of the postseason. If he had done this pre-2004, there’d already be someone working on his statue. On one day’s rest, he sealed the deal.

Awesome performance by Price. He absolutely showed he has the stones for the biggest stage this year, which up to now had been missing on his resume. Great performances all the way through, and you could really see that he now believes it too. Please opt in David, and let's do it again next year!!!

Price: I own the trump card now.

Price also said on Fox that he fixed something with his hand position that caused this resurgence in the postseason (if someone here can get the video from fox?)

also:

Price on what it means to be a great teammate ("what does it mean when teammates speak so highly of you")

Do you realize David Price has not won a postseason game in, like, a half hour?
This is awesome.

I'm most happy that Mookie is a champion, but Price is a close second. I hope this dude hears a TON of love at the parade. He deserves it. Boston loves nothing more than a comeback story.

So he won the clinching game in the ALCS, against Justin Verlander, who's going to the HOF. And he won the clinching game in the World Series, against Clayton Kershaw, who's also going to the HOF. He is right indeed

Also - Price beating the IF to Sale and Vaz on the mound may be my favorite image from tonight. Total joy.

Price joins JD Drew and John Lackey in the memorial Red Sox "one postseason made it all worth it" Hall of Fame (and Price has to be by far the best player overall out of those three and the one that contributed the most to a Sox Series win).

I was fully ready to come in here and laud his 5 IP, 3 ER gutty performance on nearly no rest.

Dude got into the 8th only giving up a run. He was dominant. That was... unbelievable. That would have been unbelievable from Bumgarner or Verlander or whomever.

Our all-world SP wasn't himself this postseason and Price willed himself to be as good to make up for it. Legend. God, it was just so fun watching him work.

Something that’s interesting if you want to make the parallels between this Sox team and some others.

3 out of the last 4 managers have won in their first season.

3 out of the last 4 teams have had that one guy with a “bad” contract that earned everything with his performance over a two week period.

I guess you could also say that on paper at least 2 out of the 4 had shaky pens overall.

So where does that leave the Sox? Will Price opt out? I still don’t think it makes sense for him to do so. The way starters were used in the post season I’m not sure he reaches his current AAV on his next deal. He’s endured a lot here. Some of it was because of himself and some the media just loved to pile on him. But good on him. Glad to see that he got over everything that kept him from pitching to his potential in October. Now let’s see if he can lead the Sox to a repeat.

Price is going to opt in because he’s not beating this deal in the market. Free agency is not what it was. He earned his deal this week, so well done to him and Dombrowski.

I’m so happy for him. He’s taken a lot of shit from the media and fans alike. He went out and pitched like a stud in the postseason after having a good year and he deserves his contract. I think he will be back without a doubt. It’s nice to keep a key part of our pitching staff around.

On a smaller scale, Lackey to the Cardinals is now worth it too.

David Price, last four appearances of the playoffs:

6.0 ip, 3 h, 0 r, 0 er, 0 bb, 9 k (wins ALCS clinching game 5 vs. Verlander)
6.0 ip, 3 h, 2 r, 2 er, 3 bb, 5 k (wins WS game 2 vs. Ryu)
0.2 ip, 1 h, 0 r, 0 er, 1 bb, 0 k
7.0 ip, 3 h, 1 r, 1 er, 2 bb, 5 k (wins WS clinching game on 3-days' rest 5 vs. Kershaw)
TOT: 19.2 ip, 10 h, 3 r, 3 er, 6 bb, 19 k, 1.37 era, 0.81 whip, 8.7 k/9

Total stud performance by David Price. He's right. He holds the trump card over the media (and fans) that want to crap all over him.

This tweet, with the #Iholdthecardsnow makes more sense after watching that. I thought he was referencing his opt out and thought it was really poor timing so I'm glad to see it's related to the trump card people used to pull on his playoff performance.

Price is only the 5th pitcher to have three consecutive postseason starts of at least 6 innings, and 3 or fewer hits.

Wow, he really let his critics have it there. I doubt he opts out, but it is more in play now that he is a post-season legend. All of a sudden teams would want to pay him more.

How much money did Evoldi earn himself? He turned himself into Andrew Miller, but more dominant, can start. He will get fucking paid!

Dominant is absolutely the right word. After the leadoff homer to Freese and the subsequent walk to Turner, Price gave up no walks and only two hits until the 8th and those hits were Puig's luckily placed jam shot flare to short left center and Freese's "triple" that was really a routine long fly ball that JD lost in the lights.

There's not much more anyone could add at this point to David Price's 2018....other than just "wow". That was about the most efficient way to shut up his critics from game 5 in the ALCS onward. I hope he gets some of the loudest cheers at the parade because he is one of the biggest reasons they are hoisting the trophy.

Two close-out gems on the road to end the ALCS and the World Series against HOF pitchers...and who knows, maybe those are the two games HOF voters look at to vote Mr. Price in someday.

Love this guy. What a turnaround, what a legitimately great postseason. Lester is one of my favorite Red Sox ever, and I'm still bummed he left the team, but Price is the man. He doesn't need to be a Jon Lester replacement. He's David fuckin Price and that's more than enough. Not making any sense right now because I'm still basking in the glow of last night :)

Loved that Fox had a clip of him blasting out of the dugout... look on his face was priceless.

A side note when you see what he did to the Dodger lefties, Roberts lineup choices make a lot of sense.
He was pretty much the guy they signed from July on, with one bad start vs the Yankees.
