I...think he shouldn't talk anymore. I saw a tweet that said something about him being allergic to dogs but I thought they were just making fun of him since you know, he has two of them.

I'm baffled.
He has carpal tunnel syndrome. He also has allergies. He also likes dogs.

No inconsistencies--done!

Two months or so. I’m sure they’ll do an injection or two first.

And for the record, video games don’t cause carpal tunnel. The only things with proven associations are operating a jackhammer and being paraplegic, and I’m pretty sure Price doesn’t qualify on either count
Based on anecdotal evidence: musicians, especially pianists are frequently afflicted with carpal tunnel. They have to stop playing for quite a while, and then modify their technique. This pertains to video games, but not pitching.

So just for clarity's sake, what is the hand/wrist issue that crops up with poorly-designed work spaces and hours of daily of keyboarding?

Price delivered a complete game win against a good offensive team when the bullpen really needed a night off. Probably not the best time to bash the guy.
I hated him with Tampa, but I am trying to learn to like him since we are stuck with him for years and years. His postseason performance last year made it much easier. And games like tonight make that much easier.

His arm probably still isn't right, so there will very likely be more missed starts and rough outings to come, but I enjoyed the hell out of tonight.

The Price is Encouraging.

I still hate him, but a Price that hits mid-90s and doesn't walk anybody is the good Price. Let's see some more of that guy.

I rarely watch his post-game interviews BUT Price with a 'thin skin' alert.

Calling himself 'soft' in a sarcastic tone.

Can't pitch in cold. Hand feels tingly, can't pitch. I'm soft

Bron is the King...I was pulling for the Celtics, let that be clear!

Ugh, he just won, they have the best record in baseball, can't he just be happy?

I saw it. He was very team playery, giving high praise about every teammate that came up. He just doesn’t smile much.

I've given him a lot of rope because the media here certainly can be dicks. But he does make it pretty hard to like him with this sort of crap.

I like him way more than I ever liked Beckett, Schilling, or Papelbon.
That is crazy. For all three.

Beckett came here after dismantling the Yankees and saving the 2003 season from being even worse. Then he came here and was nails to get us a World Series in 07.

Schilling came here, joined the forums to get a sense of the fans, and helped win the first WS in 86 years. He was massively philanthropic and handled the media really well.

Paps was a monster while he was here. Home grown player, made the change from starter to elite closer without a fuss. Won a WS with us, and was hilarious with a champagne bottle.

Price came here, disappointed for three years with fleeting moments of success but hasn’t had his John Lackey-like redemption moment yet.

I think the key distinction here is liking the guy as a player and liking the guy as a person.

Beckett, Schilling, and Papelbon were all awesome on the field while they were here, no question whatsoever. But Beckett and Papelbon were pretty much arrogant d-bags off the field (I would argue Schilling didn't become unlikable until after retirement, but YMMV).

Price has been inconsistent on the field, but his one off the field "incident" was by all accounts him defending a teammate against an (admittedly beloved) media member.

The Boston sports media has a long and ugly history with highly-paid black men. When I hear "thin-skinned", to me it sounds like "know your place, boy". And I have literally been tempted to make a list of terms used in regards to Price that get used when the speaker really means "uppity".

David Price is an excellent pitcher who has had injury problems recently. He also seems to be an intelligent guy who appears to be affected when people question his toughness on weei.com.

On the other hand, I'm not fully convinced Beckett or Papelbon ever read anything, ever, which may in fact be an asset when playing in Boston.

This is only his third year here and aside from losing much of last year to injury, I'm baffled as to how he can be considered disappointing so far. He certainly hasn't reached the depths of John Lackey's lows to need a Lackey-like moment of redemption. I guess because he hasn't posted a sub-3 ERA and been a runaway CY winner every year, he has been "disappointing".

Baffled?
He's on the largest pitchers contract ever. Has provided 7 WAR so far for the redsox.
The next highest paid in that period:
Kershaw 11.8 WAR (including missed time for injuries)
Scherzer 14.4 WAR
Greinke 8.5 WAR (including a pretty terrible first year)
Verlander 12.5

He continues to disappoint because I don’t know what I’m going to get. He’s been solid as of late, but who knows if his elbow flares up again or he stops feeling his hand again.

I just don’t know what’s going to happen with him.

Price the pitcher has been disappointing so far, not terrible like Lackey was when he tried to pitch through his injury, and Lackey the person seemed like a jerk particularly the way he reacted to his teammates messing up fielding when he was pitching, I find Price the person funny, even the Eck thing made me laugh, I just think he has a Masshole type of sense of humor, which I'm used to. And I believe his teammates who applauded the Eck thing did it because they thought it was funny, and they knew it was meant to be because they know him. I was actually surprised that Eck took it seriously because he seems like the type of person who'd laugh at that kind of thing. I don't know if Price is really affected by the media or if he just can't resist trying to joke about it.

Recent examples? I mean, even Carl Crawford wasn’t reviled until he left town and went on an obsessive anti-Boston crusade.

How much bad press has Mookie Betts received? Jackie Bradley? Mo Vaughn when he was here? Dennis and Callahan aren’t the embodiment of Boston sports media any more than Tom Yawkey is of the Red Sox today.

The problem with Price is he takes the smallest slight, and blows it up into a major story. That’s not about him being “uppity”, or “knowing his place”. It’s about being an adult and knowing that some things and some people just aren’t worth dignifying with a reaction. Assholes like Callahan and CHB thrive on manufactured drama. If you want to shut them up, don’t feed them.

He's not from the area, and Boston isn't exactly SoSH. So even if he had the perfectly attuned sense of exactly who takes them seriously and why (which he doesn't and on principle shouldn't have to), for him to see a fanbase that find their voice in EEI and the Globe's sports columns is both fair and pretty accurate. Tons of people that care about the Red Sox love those two people.

We absorb Price's personality through the prism of their awfulness; he can't engage at all except through how they frame it by definition, and they are nearly all sub-moronic. Shaughnessy used to troll along racial lines consistently. He's just aware enough to know that that troll wouldn't play anymore. I'd disagree with the post quoted only in limiting this to African-American players. Price seems to me to be mocking in his not-caring as opposed to angry or antagonistic. He's right in knowing that they'll write what they want anyway.

On social media he seems like a pretty pleasant, funny, gregarious guy that loves his kid. He was reliable but not elite in his first year, mostly hurt the next. He doesn't seem like someone I'd have a proverbial beer with but lurker42 makes a good point.

If one wanted to shut up Callahan and Shaughnessy they'd stop getting worked up about David Price's tone in a post-game interview and stop listening to and reading their stupid garbage. Not be such reliable suckers for nasty, meaningless, manufactured drama.

Mookie and JBJ are both still underpaid. I really hope that Mookie signs a ridiculously long contract with Boston, and that Sox fans are understanding when he has a down year or two. But honestly, I don't have my hopes up. We'll see.

If people (Price included) weren't feeding trolls like D&C and CHB, I would never have posted in this thread. However, I have a hard time blaming Price for responding to dogwhistle-racist terms like the ones I listed. You and I and probably David himself know it's smarter to ignore than to engage...but it's a hard thing to do when you're the target. I'm sure David Price regrets it every time he makes the mistake of engaging with one of these trolls, but that doesn't change the fact that D&C and/or CHB love it when he does, because it improves their ratings with Sully and Murph in Dorchester and JP.

He's done some stupid stuff, so his bad press has been somewhat warranted. I think he's trying to rehabilitate his reputation both on and off the field. He's got to know he's a lightning rod in a competitive media market. It's click bait every time he opens his mouth or gives up a run. Last year's run-ins with drellich and eck demonstrated a lack of awareness of the obsessive fan/media ecosystem. It's impossible to explain red sox fundamentalism to anyone not indoctrinated at birth

Mo got plenty of bad press. He was fat, he was greedy. Remember the Foxy Lady stuff? It's happened with plenty other home grown heroes once they started making money and running into adversity. Nomar is Exhibit A. The only thing the media likes more than building you up is tearing you down afterwards.

When Mookie starts making the big bucks, the media will pounce on any perceived issue - slump, injuries, personal life, etc... Its a Boston guarantee.

No, that's really the impression I had of him even before that, that he was someone who tries too hard to be funny, and thinks things are funny that others take seriously. You don't think the way he kept calling himself soft the way did after this game backs that impression of who he is up? I think JTB gets him.

Somewhere
I think Price is a good example of why it is dangerous to give big money to an older pitcher. I mean, Duquette got mocked relentlessly for the Clemens non-signing and it didn’t help that he brought in a bunch of old/injured guys to fill in over the years, but the general trend is bad for guys over 30.

Price had one good year for which he'll never get credit for despite winning 17 games and leading the league in innings. He had one year lost to injury. And one year very much in progress. The Eck thing was stupid (not funny), but, seriously, it was one incident that was more shouting match than anything else. Manny did far worse when he was here and was cheered for it.

I do think Price likes to troll sometimes, and was doing that yesterday. So what. I mean, if his critics can't take being trolled back, then they're the ones with the "thin skin".

I'm glad those guys wore the correct laundry... I disliked Schilling from his Philadelphia days, Beckett from his Miami days and Papelbon from his first interview I heard with him. It's subjective...... I just didn't like them. I don't think they were people I'd like to be on a team with or be friends with. I'm glad they beat the Yankees both before and during their Sox careers but I disliked them immensely and whenever they opened up their faceholes they all confirmed my dislike wasn't irrational. Price has done nothing like that so far to me.... his incident with Eck doesn't/didn't bother me in the least.

I don't know about this recent one of being soft. But it sounds a lot like the Eck thing that the guy is just plain angry. How you can interpret ridiculing someone else as being funny to me is mind-boggling. I can understand what Price did if he and Eck were friends. In this case too - it doesn't sound like he's trying to be funny at all.It sounds like someone super-sensitive - and looks to speak out at any slight / perceived slight. It seems any slight he is forcing himself to make a comment. IMO that's not trying to be funny. IMO it's clear that he's clearly bothered. It seems like he lets little "roll off his back." He feels a need to snap back. .

Price's 2016 season was definitely "punished" a bit more because of his poor performance in the ALDS. Might be unfair, but that's the way the media and a lot of fans view it. When the marbles were on the line, he didn't perform...but in retrospect, it was hard to blame him for throwing heat inside to Lonnie Chisenhall who can't hit an inside FB out to save his life. He just happened to do it in that game for a 3 run jack and Price gets the blame.

He was completely worth his contract though in 2016. 230 innings of mid-3s FIP is pretty much a beast season.

It is funny how he was "punished" for the one start in the ALDS, but no one really kicked Chris Sale for his puke-fest in Game 1 ALDS last year. I remember the drum-thumping for a "true ace" after that 2016 postseason but don't recall it this past winter. Personally, I'm happy to have both guys pitching for the Sox so long as they're healthy. A post-season rotation fronted by those two can stand up against anyone else in the league.

Given other approaches possible, I don not prefer Price's attitude, but I get it. He has the siege mentality, us/me against the world. He sees himself ans picked on a defender of himself and team mates. If it helps him pitch better, who cares?

The average Sox fan wants you to play well against the Yankees (if they are good), to show physical and mental toughness, and to visibly appear to enjoy yourself which includes never complaining to the media.

The EEI fan wants to see you go 8 shut out innings every start and x-rays of your supposed fractured fibula,

I think Price has been fine overall. His 2016 season is the new norm for a 30 million dollar pitcher earning his contract. He is a bit off pace to earn it this year, but could very well do so. He's not ever going to be my favorite personality but as long as he isn't a bad person, I don't really care.

Head to head match ups against the Yankees do matter more than ever though because of the stupid wild card system, and he has been borderline unplayable against them. He will never win the fan base completely over until that changes.

When you have a contract like his, the goal posts will be moved consistently until they are unreachable by mere mortals.

I'm perfectly happy with him as a pitcher. When healthy, he has been very good. Health is one of the key risks you take signing any free agent pitcher, and he hasn't been a total disaster when it comes to that. I do my best to separate my opinion of the person from the on field contribution of the player, and remind myself that the public persona we see is not necessarily how the player is in private. It's hard to hate a player when they play incredibly well and seem to have a great time, like Manny did for example. No matter what I heard about him, I remembered the big plays and the highlights of him cutting off Johnny Damon or selling his grill on EBay and had to smile. Price is not going to be someone like that for me. That's ok. I just want him to pitch well and give me reason to like his contribution to the team.

With Sale I think we were ready for him to have a bad outing, since he'd been fading down the stretch and was alternately great or horrible all September. It was easier to blame Farrell.

Which is amusing given that Price led the league in innings pitched and batters faced in 2016. But noone wants to use the same excuse as was done with Sale. I realize part of that is due to Price's 2-8 playoff record, but even that record should have astericks for both small sample size and just plain bad luck. Consider the following:

2010 ALDS: Price pitches well enough to win both games (14 K's, 0 BB's in 12+ innings), but the Rays score 1 run in each game.

2011 ALDS: Price loses a close one to the Rangers in Game 3.

2013 ALDS: Price gets hit hard by the Sox in Game 2.

2014 ALDS: Price allows 2 runs in 8 innings, but loses 2-1.

2015 ALDS/ALCS: 4 games: 1 win in relief where he didn't pitch all that well, 2 losses (where he was meh), and 1 no-decision despite a quality start (3 runs in 6.2 innings).

Yeah, agree. I am merely pointing out that Sale has a pretty significant/depressing 1st half/2nd half career split, whereas Price has been slightly better in the second half over his career. So that's the source of the perceptions, or lack thereof, which feeds into forgiving Sale but not Price. One good run this October will blow all that away though.

Hanley

How have the Boston sports media done with those?
Manny got some flack for being a bonehead, but nothing egregious.
Ortiz was, is, and will continue to be a Boston sports icon.
Crawford got a free pass, despite having perhaps the worst contract in MLB history, until he became obsessed with Boston after he had already left.
Sandoval was criticized for his conditioning, and rightfully so.
Price is a victim of his own invention. The Eckersley fiasco. Twitter wars. Not letting things go. He's essentially feeding the trolls.
Hanley was never treated poorly, and has never indicated that he was.

How is any of this any different than the general animosity towards John Lackey (he's an asshole, he's a bad teammate, he's divorcing his wife who has cancer, he's rude to the media), Beckett (he's fat, he doesn't care, golf, chicken and beer), J.D. Drew (overpaid, doesn't care), or Ellsbury (he's soft, fragile)?

I don't know - Sale hit the ground running and was the best pitcher/player in baseball for the first few months so built up more bank with the fans. Price probably wouldn't have gotten as much backlash if he was that fantastic that early into his Sox career.
