The latest bidding war for the UK TV rights for the PL for seasons 2016 - 2019 (3 seasons) has just been announced.

GBP 5.136 billion

There were 7 packages available, SKY have won 5 of them with BT Sport winning the other 2.

There had better be some trickle-down to the actual fans that go to games, particularly away fans, otherwise there will be hell to pay.

5.136 billion or 10.2 million for each and every PL game broadcast in the 168-game deal.

Edit: Bonkers

Forgive my ignorance, but is each and every PL match broadcast live in the UK? My understanding is that in the past it hasn't been. For that amount of money, it had better be part of the deal.

No, matches that kick off at 3pm on Saturday are not allowed to be shown live in the UK.

Of the 380 premier league matches per season, 168 will be shown live on the new deal.

Living in the US I get better access to live matches (thanks NBC) than I would back home.

Could you elaborate because I have no idea what you mean here.

I assume he means that since teams will be getting a big bump in tv revenue that they could perhaps make the cost of attending a match a little more reasonable.

Do away fans get charged more? And if so, how do they know the purchaser is an away fan? Do you have to fill out a questionnaire or something?

EDIT: I'm amusing myself with thoughts of a quiz to determine fan rooting interest. Would Liverpool include "how many posts did we we hit in 2013"?

Away fans are seated together, and apart from home fans for security reasons. And away fans buy tickets for their club's away matches through the club, not through the home team hosting them.

And away fans get charged a fuckton, sometimes more than home fans. Away teams get put into tiers. The teams in the highest tier get charged the most.

Away teams are allotted tickets, and you purchase them through your club.

Like Aspith and Wayback said, I know Benfica away fans pay more for attending matches than they do at home. The prices are set by the home team. Since it's the Ultras that get most of the tickets, they will at times boycott a game if the price is too high. The club will usually take care of the transportation to the stadium.  For matches that do not involve the big 3, the away fans don't typically pay a premium for attending.

Club members get priority and discounts for home matches (Usually a third off).

As a UK resident who already subscribes to Sky and BT Sport and was worried about having to subscribe to a third pay TV service, today's announcement is something of a relief. I'd still be subscribing to Sky for many other sports and BT Sport because ESPN (and its US sports coverage) is bundled into it, so even if those prices rise somewhat I won't be as bad off as I would have been if a new provider had broken through and grabbed a big chunk of rights.

Why are 3 pm matches not televised live?
I believe it's out of fear that people will stay home and watch games on TV, rather than attend a match.  Especially if the choice is a TV match between 2 top Premier League teams vs. attending a local match in the lower leagues.
