Great goal by Sunderland. Tim Howard woulda saved it.

edit: but no goalie on earth saves that second one. Maybe it hits Courtois's forehead.

Like Rick in Casblanca, Everton went to Sunderland for the beaches and were misinformed.

Here's a sign of how bad Aston Villa were this season:

If Norwich holds on, the 19th place team will have twice as many points as 20th place Villa.

Everton's last 3 away games had a combined score of 10-1 against, and the 1 was very late in the Leicester City game when down 3-0.

That Derby side also had something like a -70 goal differential. They were dreadful. I remember my fantasy strategy that season being "pick whoever is playing Derby this week."

I was rooting for Sunderland for the sake of Yedlin, who absolutely tore it up today and will be in fine form this summer.

But my condolences to the fine fans of Newcastle and Norwich here, whose teams really gave a shit and a solid effort and will have much improving prospects shortly (particularly if Newcastle manages to keep Benitez, however unlikely). You'll almost certainly watch many more wins next year than this year, at least.

I just took a look at the game log for that 07-08 Derby side. Of their 11 points, they earned 4 against Newcastle, including their only win of the season. They were winless in their last 32 games.

If I didn't think they had simply given up, I'd want somebody investigating Everton for match fixing. That was a comically inept performance.

I like that Sunderland win, because now Newcastle has nothing to play for against Tottenham this weekend.

Villa probably have the ugliest relegation ever, if that makes sense. Derby were just really bad, it was pretty obvious before the season began that they had the weakest squad in the division. Things definitely spiralled out of control (I swear there were Paul Jewell dong pics in the tabloids), but they were always going to stink.

Meanwhile, I didn't think Villa's squad was *that* bad and the amount of half-decent local players who are all but goatse-ing the fans of a club they claim to have supported all their lives is amazing. I don't remember there being any Derby natives walking about on the pitch not giving a fuck while they collected a massive pay check like Lescott, Agbonlahor and Richards have done.

Lukaku and Stones will almost certainly leave. Barkley's been playing like one foot is out the door, but of the three I'd be the least surprised if he stuck around.

Lukaku and Stones still have three years left on their deals, Barkley two. Unless there are release clauses, Everton have most of the leverage. I'd be surprised if any of them leave unless someone offers a crazy fee.

One Arsenal poster here once said "Nothing is more important than finishing above Spurs."
As a Spurs fan, OF COURSE finishing above Arsenal matters. Seeing as this is a Red Sox board, wouldn't Sox fans badly want to finish above the Yankees if they hadn't done it in 21 years?

Abso-fucking-lutely. I just find it amusing (or weird) when people pretend otherwise, like the Spurs fans GF09 met the other day. If the Sox had finished behind the Yankees, in seasons good and bad, for 21 years running, and we flipped the script just once, I'd be prepared to take out an ad in the new york times and a big neon sign in times square just to rub it in their dirty entitled noses. Shit, Sox fans basically did that after 2004. People here still profess their hope every year that the Yankees go 0-162 and taunt the rotting corpse of George Steinbrenner.

A passive "fuck them and their fake holiday, but I don't really care that much" attitude is either a stupendously British attempt at acting world-weary, or a sign that that guy doesn't really get what a rivalry should be about.

Yeah...all that is true.

However I was mostly just saying that our opponent now has nothing to play for and therefore my team is more likely to win.

The fact that it means it should be easier to finish ahead of Arsenal is awesome as well.

The best attack in the league this season is Whoever's Playing Villa. The best defense in the league this year is Whoever's Playing Villa.

I don't think the quality of the league as a whole is any worse than when Derby only managed 11 points. The top of the league isn't as good--just look at the European performances--but 6 through 15 are probably significantly better thanks to TV money that dwarfs the rest of the world. Mid table sides didn't sign the likes of Cabaye and Afellay then.

"Fuck the league, we just need to beat these [use your imagination]" was roughly what my next seat neighbor had to say to me at the NLD when I brought up Leicester. And we were seated in the family section. And that did seem to be the prevailing sentiment around WHL. I'm sure it was just derby day talk, but the hate was palpable. I genuinely believe if the choice were between taking the double against Arsenal with Arsenal finishing out of Europe, or winning the league but losing to Arsenal, some of those old timers would have to think about it.

So, there is a small chance that West Ham and Liverpool might need a playoff to determine who qualifies for the Europa League. According to the BBC:

West Ham would have to lose 1-0 at Stoke City AND Liverpool beat West Brom 2-1; or the Hammers lose 2-1 while it finished 3-2 to the away side at The Hawthorns, or so on. In addition, seventh-placed Southampton would have to be denied a win against visitors Crystal Palace.

Those scorelines would leave the London and Merseyside clubs level after 38 matches of a season lasting nine months.

If they were tied, the play-off would only be needed if their finishing spot is in a Europa League position, and Sevilla were to win next week's final in Basle.

A Premier League spokesperson confirmed an extra game could take place, although the likelihood is small.

League rules state: "If at the end of the season either the league champions or the clubs to be relegated or the question of qualification for other competitions cannot be determined because two or more clubs are equal on points, goal difference and goals scored, the clubs concerned shall play off one or more deciding league matches on neutral grounds, the format, venue and timing of which shall be determined by the board."

Glad we can finally see Arsenal be the best at those things!

As per the rumors Flores is leaving Watford.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/36284162

I have a feeling they get relegated next season. I know their form tailed off as they got close to 40 points, but Charlton did that every year for yonks, then got rid of Curbishley and shat the bed big time. Stoke have run out of gas, Palace only just got their shit together six or so weeks ago and were in freefall for a while. I expect Hughes and Pardew to be back next season.

Flores hit his target, kept them up with games to spare and they got a FA cup Semi final. But it wasn't good enough.

The challenge with guessing where Watford finishes next year is we have no idea what the squad or management will look like. Who do the Pozzos bring in from Grenada and Udinese? I assume they'll prioritize Watford because of the money in the EPL, but how they do it is anyone's guess.
