That's what I get for posting before 7am. My point still remains though. Their 4th OF the last two seasons was their regular DH, so it's not as though Pillar was a clear and obvious need when they signed him. At that point, nothing had changed with their primary outfield personnel.
I would have made the same guess you did. Since I knew I was likely to be wrong, I looked it up.

Wasn't Pillar signed after the Betts deal? I seem to remember them signing him with some of the money saved from that trade.

He was. Betts traded on 2/5 and Pillar was signed on 2/14 to compliment Verdugo in RF and backup Beni and JBJ.

We are picking nits (not you specifically....).

We got a legit prospect (especially for our system) for a guy signed to cover for injured player til his return and to be the 4th OF.

It's a win.

No one is saying it's not. There was debate as to whether this was a move Bloom made where his thinking at the time was "I don't need him but I can flip him for something at the deadline." There's less of a case to be made for that when you're Mookieless and have 3 left handed hitting outfielders penciled in to start.

And what's your problem with picking nits? This is the Kevin Pillar thread. There ain't a whole lot left to discuss here.

University of Connecticut baseball coach Jim Penders was taking a break between fall workouts with his players the other day when he returned a call to discuss the Red Sox acquiring his former closer, Jacob Wallace, from the Rockies as the player to be named later for Kevin Pillar.

“I don’t know if Chaim Bloom was wearing a mask, but that was highway robbery,” Penders said.
...
“You can’t ask for a better person,” Penders said. “He’s one of our favorites and would be even if he wasn’t such an outstanding player. He’s completely selfless.”

Wallace, who played at Methuen High, left scholarship money from another school on the table to pay his own way to UConn as a freshman. His fastball was in the mid 80s at the time, but pitching coach Josh MacDonald liked the way the ball came out of his hand.

Wallace’s fastball now sits at 94-95 and climbs to 97.

“He loves high-pressure situations,” Penders said. “His stuff plays. When we played Oklahoma State [in the 2019 NCAA Tournament] they were one of the best offensive teams in the country and he made them look silly.”
...
He’s headed to Florida this coming week and will take part in the fall program the Sox will host in Fort Myers.
