Comparing the trash fire that was the 2022 Red Sox to this Phillies team is hilarious. Watching them play over the last few weeks makes the Sox’ deficiencies even more glaring.
Because nobody on this board ever wanted a punt a season in July after a loss or two before 2022.

Holy shit they threw away an out. What a loser.
It was a tribute to Gene Mauch.

(A few months ago, I caught a replay of Game 5 of the 1982 ALCS between the Angels and the Brewers, and the Angels, down one run in the ninth, got the lead runner on, and the Angels immediately bunted with the next batter. And I thought, "Yup, that's Gene Mauch. Down to his last three outs, and he's more than willing to hand you one.")

Also, all that talk about the Phillies defense and their roster construction seems kinda silly. Lots of ways to skin a cat.
Or the playoffs are largely luck and small sample size. They weren't a very good or a well constructed team, but sometimes that doesn't matter.

This is incorrect. Some esteemed members here have the ability to determine any team's exact season results from just one preseason game.

Your point stands but it simply doesn't apply to anyone on SoSH.

Any defenders of the bunt here?
I didn't think it was a bad idea. Grisham, regardless of what he did in the Wild Card series, was the worst hitter in baseball. He had a better chance of beating out a bunt or benefitting from a throwing error on a wet field with a young pitcher than knocking in those runs. And worst case he moved them over to score on a wild pitch.

That’s right, they will forever be remembered as having the 6th best regular season record in the national league.

Just as everyone will recall the Sox as a playoff team done in by bad luck. Never change, Scottyno!

I'll seem stupid asking another question: why is it so obvious that Harper is the MVP and no one even mentions Hoskins?
They should share it, but if Harper gets it it's a little like Magic winning the 1980 Finals over Kareem because he had that great last game. In Harper's case, it's because he had the last great moment.

Fair enough.

I think the potential for a wild pitch is the best excuse for bunting. Or just making a Phillies fielder make a play, which can often result in a miscue.

Let me tell you another take that I hope dies with this series: people pointing out that the Nats won the WS right after Harper left which proves that he’s bad at baseball or something?

Wife is at the game, says the place almost shook apart after the Harper HR.

Not sure what them being remembered for has to do with if they actually built a good roster or if defense matters, but ok.

I think the same. Grisham went 184/284/341 this year. He might suck at contact but he’s not without some plate discipline. You’d think he’d at least tried to see if he could draw out the PA and get on base. If the idea was to catch the infield by surprise, it was a terribly executed bunt.

Whatever the case, they made it a two-pitch outing for an impromptu reliever and the Phillies move on. That’s sports.

The Phillies have some really nice pitching coming up; beyond Painter, they've got another big, huge ceiling kid in Mick Abel who also finished the year in AA, and Griff McGarry might have the best stuff of the three, he just has the least control of it (but even if that relegates him to the pen, he's got top tier closer level stuff). Erik Miller could be an impact reliever too. But it's definitely a thin farm, and I don't really love any of their hitting prospects. They may have some internal replacements if they can't afford/don't want to match FA prices for guys like Nola, Eflin, Alvarado, but they're going to have to pony up on the offensive side.

I was really hoping this would go 6 or 7, but the Phillies are definitely starting to get that Team of Destiny smell to them.
Did any recent team have a bigger 'Team of Destiny' vibe than the 2007 Colorado Rockies? They came into the WS having won 21 of 22 games including a wild card play-in game and DS and NLCS sweeps. We all know how that worked out for them.

I don't recall anyone outside of Denver thinking the '07 Rockies had any chance in the World Series. Despite their streak, the pitching staff was awful and they were clearly the least talented World Series team since WWII. Any mojo they had predictably vanished during all the downtime waiting for the ALCS to play out and their destiny was to embarrass themselves.

As a Cleveland fan, I was as upset in 2007 as I was in 1997... and probably more so than I'd be in 2016, because everyone already knew at the time that the ALCS was the World Series that year.

They had a pretty damn good lineup, though. It wasn't like they lucked into it.
