Pete Rose petitioning MLB for reinstatement

Rose is basing his request because his "lifetime ban is vastly disproportionate when compared with MLB's punishments of players who took performance-enhancing drugs and the players involved in the sign-stealing schemes by the 2017 Houston Astros."
ESPN

For as much as I have disliked Pete Rose, he probably has a point after MLB signed a deal with MGM Resorts International for it to become an official league partner for gaming, then followed that up with a deal with DraftKings that makes it an "Authorized Gaming Operator" and allows its sportsbook to "use league logos and to have access to official league data."
legalsportsreport.com article by Dustin Gouker, 6 months ago (I found this through a Google News search on my phone and don't have the actual URL).

Ugh, this is a non-story. Anytime someone gets suspended for something in MLB, Pete Rose somehow gets his fucking name in the news.

Maybe he could petition for the Medal of Freedom, while he’s at it. Why not? Anything seems to be possible in these dark times.

I think he belongs in the Hall of Fame but I still say keep him out of baseball. He admitted he lied in 2004 on betting and the mob was involved. He has to learn a lesson. And at times he seems to show no remorse.

Rose is truly one of the bigger scum bags in baseball history. I will never, ever support his hall of fame candidacy.

He asked for the ban, in exchange for stopping the investigation. So it's hard to say if his punishment is disproportionate, since there were no findings... at his request.

All I'm saying is that if Manfred declines to lift Rose's lifetime ban and Rose takes it to court armed with MLB's connections with legalized gambling and what went on with sign stealing, I would not be surprised if he won.

I would be very surprised if he won. MLB has a business relationship with the gaming industry so MLB can get a piece of the action on the money bet by the general public on it's games. I'm not sure if this would be some kind of direct revenue sharing from bets (probably not) or just licensing MLB properties. MLB will still not allow any of the players or front office personnel to bet on MLB games whether it is legal or not. Alcohol is legal in all 50 states and served on all flights and in all airports. Doesn't mean a pilot can drink while on duty. Pete Rose should be in the HoF but never allowed back in baseball.

The timing is this appeal is actually savvy. If this was the NFL, Goodell would reinstate him right before the season starts. Everyone would go insane and debate Pete Rose (.2 PSI) vs. focusing on the real issue of the Astros first games and cheating scandal fallout (concussions, DV, etc.).

Dude bet on his team when he specifically knew it would lead to a lifetime ban if caught. Sign stealing and steroids have not almost destroyed baseball the way players/managers gambling did (the Black Sox scandal).

If you are one of those people who try and justify him by saying "he only bet on his team to win!" I have three counterarguments:

1. As people upthread said, he accepted the ban to halt the continuing investigation. There's been smoke over the years that he, in fact, did make some bets on the team to lose.
2. Even if you don't believe point #1, if he bets on the team to win four games in a row, and then doesn't bet on them to win the fifth game, what's the message one should take from that? I'll wait while you puzzle that out...
3. A manager making personnel decisions to win a game can run counter to what's best for the team over the season, particularly with pitcher use.

So in total, fuck this guy and keep him out of baseball forever.

Under what legal theory does a court have jurisdiction over MLB’s ability to ban Pete Rose?

This should just be copy-and-pasted every time he gets his name in the news in this regard.

"I took a plea deal, I was never convicted in a court of law! Therefore you should overturn the plea deal."

With Trump, someone probably made a case to him for Rose, based on that he's paid his time and he only bet on his own team, anyway. If I was president (and not a serious baseball fan) and was considering tweeting in support of Rose, I would have one of the aids that was a baseball fan put in a couple of hours of research and explain to me the arguments for and against supporting Rose. I doubt if Trump had that done.

For most people with a knowledge of the history of the sport and how games are managed, ending Rose's ban is a non-starter.

Trump feels persecuted so he's going to reflexively defend any scumbag who's been persecuted.

As long and Bonds, Clemens et al are kept out of the HoF on account of suspicion of doping, Pete Rose should be held to that same standard.

Unless you somehow believe Charlie never got any his hustle out of the clubhouse greenie bowl in the ‘60’s and ‘70’s...

And Comm'r Giamatti Ruby'd him.
Paul Giamatti the actor and son of the late Bartlett says his father told his family that in five years he was going to give Pete another chance if he admitted to gambling and suspend him for five years. Unfortunately that died with his death. Bart personally liked Pete according to Paul.

Well, right now nobody's getting into the Hall of Fame. I have hotel reservations for the first of May and I'm losing of hope of using them.

Over the last ten years of his career, Rose compiled nearly 1,500 hits and just 8.2 total bWAR. To say he stuck around just to beat the record would be an understatement.

I don't know if he's able, but continuing to appeal to Trump and hoping Trump pressures MLB might be Rose's best chance to get in - at least in the foreseeable future. As others have mentioned, it wouldn't be a surprise if Trump sees Rose as a fellow traveller and a big win to get him in. It'd dovetail nicely with the MAGA crowd's interests - old school Charley Hustle rooked by MLB's elites (Giamatti, president of Yale!) - and a good distraction (although obviously minor) in these times. I don't think President Biden (fingers crossed) is going to bat for Pete.
