He had 50 catches 2 seasons ago with Jets, no idea on his blocking.

He obviously hasn't played with a QB like Brady. I see no reason, unless he simply cannot pick up offense, that he can't put up numbers like Bennett did a few years ago--50-60 catches, 600-700 yards.

ASJ has had some good games against the Pats. That always seems to catch Bill's attention. See Welker, Wes, among others.

He's never even had 400 yards in a season, so this is a very rosy projection. Bennett had had 900 before coming to NE.

ASJ's biggest problem is that he has never been able to stay on the field. He has played more than nine games once in five years in the league. The talent definitely was there when he came into the league. Spending five years in and out of the tub and never really honing his craft over a consistent stretch of games probably hasn't done much for him though.

Yes, but now he has a QB that excels at throwing to TEs, so my assumption was if he got 75 targets or so, and 50 catches, he'll average more than the 7.1 ypc he had with the Jets that year.

Randy Moss never had 23 TDs in a season until he came to NE ;)

We tried to apply similar logic to Daniel Fells, Tim Wright, Scott Chandler, Dwayne Allen, etc. Tight end is tough. They have to know everything a wide receiver does (including all the conversions / reads / adjustments), plus all the run- and pass- blocking schemes. ASJ has a better chance of being cut than putting up a 600-yard season.

Because of the Gronk / Hernandez combo, there's a sense that the Patriots are really good at picking tight ends or getting production out of tight ends. But Gronk is the only Pats TE under B/B to have multiple 600-yard seasons. Hernandez did it once, Bennett did it once, Watson did it once, that's it.

Yeah, but we ain't got no one else at TE right now. lol Ain't no splitting catches.

And I did say if he's able to pick up the offense. If he's cut, I'd assume he didn't.

Why wouldn't he be splitting catches? They paid LaCosse actual money. I think you're reading too much into Seferian-Jenkins being drafted highly once long ago.

Nothing not to like about this signing. Pretty sure he's not going to be the next Gronk but whatever. Should be a useful piece in filling the positional need.

I think you're reading too much into a prediction made in April.

I think it hasn't been said often enough that he took a minimum salary and $50k signing bonus, all because he wanted to play for the Patriots. I'm sure he wasn't getting a fortune from any team, but as a healthy veteran with good pass-catching skills he certainly could have beaten that on the open market.

Remember that article where a bunch of NFL agents told tales of woe of trying to negotiate with Belichick? About how he basically makes the player fall in love with him and then says "here's what we can pay you" and never budges, and then the player just decides to take it over the agent's advice? Chalk up another one for Belichick. I'm not sure any story we hear of that variety will ever top Rodney Harrison getting his mind blown, but I love each and every one of them.

Healthy veteran? He played 5 games last season. He's played 9, 7, 9, 13 and 5 games in his 5 seasons. He makes Gronk look like Cal Ripken.

Healthy now, is what I meant, but I only read some cursory stuff. Is there reason to believe he won't be at 100% for training camp?
