I've been staying out of this . . . . Am glad that Paterno is out; the whole thing reeks of evil. But one tihng that people haven't mentioned.

We've discussed how after the 1998 incident, Sandusky was told that he wasn't going to be successor to Paterno. And we've all speculated why.

But even more damning (at least to me) is that shortly after that, Sandusky was interviewed 3 times for the VA job and was the front-runner at one point. But VA quickly moved on to Al Groh. Why is that? Did Penn State tell Terry Holland something?
I wonder if UVA did a background check and turned up the aborted investigation?

Maybe the board should have taken the McQueary Morning Drive to Paterno's house tomorrow a.m and tell him they just saw some dude rape a 10-year old in the ass and ask him what he thinks should be done next.

Then he says he'd call the cops in between tears.

Then they fire his ass.

The kids they're showing could not look happier, seriously doubt any "rioting" will occur tonight.

Imagine what Sandusky's victims are going through watching this display of horrible misplaced anger.

I want to drop kick every one of these damn kids.

McQuery still hasn't been shitcanned yet, right?

Cuz... that still needs to happen.
That is the most disturbing thing about tonight...well besides what might happen with rioting and all.

I think a large portion of them could not give a single shit. They're dumbass college kids who will probably use this as a reason to get shitfaced on a Wednesday.

Watching CNN's feed btw.

Did Surma clarify whether Paterno will be allowed to still attend home games? If so it will be a 3-ring circus.

I never thought in 2011 I'd see a college's student-body that is openly rooting for powerful white men who sweep child rape under the rug. Where the hell is all the touchy-feely, everyone's a victim stuff that goes on with all campuses across the country?

When reached for comment, Paterno said "Hired? Did you say I was hired? That's great." "No, Coach you were fired." "No, I'm not tired. I'm fine."

What if he is somehow found innocent? is that even possible?
I doubt it but really it doesn't matter. Serious credible charges were made by someone who certainly had nothing to gain by making the charges and the proper authorities were never contacted.

This isn't Watergate where the coverup is worse than the crime by any means but while it is possible no one will ever be found guilty of anything the coverup happened.

Pick your favorite PSU riot here: http://m.youtube.com/#/results?desktop_uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fresults%3Fsearch_query%3Dbeaver%2Bcanyon%2Briots%26aq%3Df&aq=f&search_query=beaver+canyon+riots&gl=US

These don't include the epic late 90s riots during ArtsFest either.

Read the grand jury report and let us know what you think.
I've read it and like I think I said on page 1 of this thread, was aware of the investigation for sometime.

That doesn't stop me from being increasingly uncomfortable with the focus and fervor of the story. I can empathize with all parties involved with the exception of Sandusky.

Improbably, Ben Roethlisberger and Michael Vick have moved down the list of football-related scumbags who play in Pennsylvania.

I'm sure it did. And if you are Terry Holland, and you turn up something like that, who is the first person you call?

To me, there is a reason why a highly successful defensive coach:

(1) was told he was not going to be the successor to the PSU coaching job,
(2) did not get another coaching job despite interviewing three times and being a front runner,
(3) never (so far as I can tell) got a serious sniff at another coaching job, BUT
(4) was allowed and encouraged to run a nonprofit for children.

There is only one possible answer that I can think of.

It would be really interesting to put Terry Holland under truth serum.

I have a hard time finding empathy for someone whose inaction resulted in children getting raped, but to each his own.

I said this to a friend a couple days ago before this has gotten even more ridiculous, but could you imagine telling someone before this season that the SECOND worst college football scandal of the year would include:

the knowledge or direct participation of at least seven coaches from the Miami football and basketball programs... at a cost that Shapiro estimates in the millions of dollars, he said his benefits to athletes included but were not limited to cash, prostitutes, entertainment in his multimillion-dollar homes and yacht, paid trips to high-end restaurants and nightclubs, jewelry, bounties for on-field play (including bounties for injuring opposing players), travel and, on one occasion, an abortion.
The NCAA is going to look like a joke punishing schools for minor infractions for a decade after this

Paterno statement: "Right now I am not the football coach and that is something I have to get used to."

Doesn't really sound like he will go kicking and screaming.

The sad truth about this is that it's overwhelmingly likely that Sandusky himself was abused.

Paterno statement: "Right now, I'm not the football coach -- and that's something I have to get used to."

Awesome.

Why are you uncomfortable about the focus and ferver? Sandusky is done. The focus and ferver that followed have now ousted Paterno, the AD and the President. Anyone who knew about it and did not see that it ultimately went to the correct law enforcement so that Sandusky was taken care of once and for all needed to be cleansed from the program.

Now that they are, it's time for the victims to have their days to tell their horror stories and to hopefully get an incredible amount of money once their lawyers take PSU by the balls.

I'm uncomfortable that this has shifted from a Jerry Sandusky story to a story about Joe Paterno and Penn State football. This is not a college football story.

And I know none of us know who knew what and when, but if it turns out that PSU/Joe Pa knew enough to tell Terry Holland not to hire this guy but still let him run Second MIle, well, I guess that's what we all call the "banality of evil."
Not really.

I realize you're using a common phrase that came into the lexicon when Hannah Arendt used it to describe Adolf Eichmann, but do you know what "banality" actually means? Arendt used the phrase to describe how ordinary and normal Eichmann's actions were in Nazi Germany, rather than the work of sociopaths, and how this is typically the case with massive crimes against humanity. Somehow people have begun to equate it with the depths of evil, when "banal" means nothing of the sort.

Of course it is, in the same way that the perverse actions of individual priests ultimately became a story about the Roman Catholic church. This stuff happens in a context, and in both instances the context led to the offenders being shielded from justice for extended periods of time.

But... it sort've is because Sandusky's ability to continue to prey on children was seemingly aided and abetted BY people involved with PSU and PSU Football specifically.

Where are they going to try this case? What possible juror in the Big 10 region has not heard of this?
See Simpson, OJ; Anthony, Casey

I mentioned this upthread. Not from PA, but is it possible to field an unbiased jury there? Seems people in the area will be either JoePa koolaid drinkers or understandably driven to rage by the accusations. I've heard of the latter happen in sexual abuse and other high profile cases where the jury convicts, but were so enraged by reports in the media that defense lawyers successfully appealed on the grounds of an unfair trial and had the the convictions overturned. So possibility should not be overlooked. The "West Memphis 3" is a recent case I can recall. However, it ended up that they truthfully were wrongfully convicted.

But it is - it's a story of what happens when you let a college football program get so powerful that it takes over a university, and allows its own people to be accountable only to themselves and not to the police or the public

With the likely massive size of the civil suits against PSU that are undoubtedly going to be filed, we may very well be witnessing the beginning of the end of the powerful football dept that is run with no effective oversight by the university itself

It absolutely is a college football story. It is a story of lies and cover-ups to the $50m per year cash machine could keep plugging along. It is a story of how big money college athletics take precedent over moral obligations.
