It is well known that Dustin has been battling wrist and lingering soreness in his thumb from last season.  He has received cortisone shots and has played through the injuries to this point and still provides excellent defense and some good offensive production. It looks like his power is sapped as a result of his injuries but he is on pace to hit about as many 2B as he averages annually (~46).  Sure, he won't his 15 HR's this year, but as long as he continues to hit 2B, get on base and play his usual stellar D, I'm ok with it.

But, Dustin left the game last night with a right hand contusion.  X-Rays (Fluroscan) were negative and he will have further tests today, but at what point is it logical to give him 15 days to rest?

Mookie is tearing is up in Portland but does the team want to start his clock?  With Drew returning soon, stick with X, Holt, Herrera and Drew for 15 days?

BOSTON -- Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia came out of Friday night’s game after batting in the ninth inning with an injury to his right hand.

Sox manager John Farrell said that Pedroia hurt the hand while taking a throw from catcher A.J. Pierzynski on Wil Myers’s steal of second in the fourth inning.

“He landed on the right hand,” Farrell said. “A right hand contusion. The Fluoroscan was negative. Further imaging in the morning."

Personally, I'm starting to think it is necessary to give him a break.  Perhaps closer to the All Star game to give him a few additional days off.  I would promote Mookie to AAA and stick with X, Drew, Holt and Herrara if Dustin hits the DL.

They will use Holt if Dustin needs a DL stint. Mookie is better off in Portland continuing to move around the field defensively until he makes the move to PawSox.

Yeah, Holt's best position is 2B, so the logical move is just to promote Drew as planned and give Pedroia a few days off.

If we wait until the All Star break he may be healed by then. For him to come out of last night's game, you know it has to be significant. At some point management has to step in and DL him for 15 days, regardless of what he says.

Who's going to tell Dustin he needs to take a few days off?
I wouldn't want to do it.

Who has to tell De La Rosa what the infield backing him up tonight looks like?

Hard to know what the cause is, injuries or simply a slump, but in the 19 games since his SLG crested at .401, the laser show has been awfully dim:

87 PA, 233/322/315, with just four extra base hits. And because he's hitting in front of Papi, he's not stealing bases, that's for sure.

He seems to be seeing the ball okay - 11 walks against 13 Ks - but he's just making a ton of outs. He hasn't had a hit in the last three games.

His BABIP is .258, so maybe a little unlucky, but without going into the batted ball data, my experience of watching him is a lot of flyouts to the not-very-deep outfield and not a lot of scalded liners being caught.

Just in this O's series, there have been a couple balls that he even seemed to square up pretty good, but were basically just warning track power.

If the wrist or hand is screwed up, that's the breaks, I guess. But he's really not contributing offensively at all right now.

I'm not sure what's to be done. Dogman opened the thread by calling for a rest. Pedey's defense looks undiminished - actually, he's at as high a level as I've seen - but it seems like something just isn't right. And nearly 100 PA is starting to be a good stretch of concern.
