The Bill Simmons Thread

I just finished the Rewatchables episode on Raiders of the Lost Ark, and I can't believe nobody asked how Indy managed to get to and then off of the island where the Ark is put on display. Getting there involves hitching a ride on the exterior of a German U-boat which might submerge at any moment, and/or which would have sailors coming on deck all the time to keep watch when not submerged. Then, how do they get off the island with the Ark? Did every last German on the island - including everyone at the naval base who didn't see God incarnate with their own eyes - get melted and vaporized as well? And even if they did, what, does Indy just radio for help and secure a plane or ship ride out of there while nobody in Berlin notices that they've lost contact with their secret naval base? I love the movie, but that's a bad job by them to not talk about this.

(In case the video doesn't start when it should, go to 1:10...and replace "hair" with "submarines & islands.")

Fennesey’s and Ryan’s interview with Tarantino about the Once Upon a Time book and other stuff is really fun and fascinating for film fans.

I'm now convinced that Simmons is purposefully mispronouncing things just to troll people. On the Independence Day Rewatchables he said "Tac Tok" not once, but twice. It has become my new favorite Easter egg hunt in that podcast.

I find few things more entertaining than a good "JackO is really frustrated with the Yankees, lets call him up!" podcast.

I would too if I were a Sox fan because the guy is like the worst Yankee fan stereotype come to life. His takes are always god-awful and he comes off as a complete asshole, even when the Yankees are playing well and he supposedly has nothing to complain about.

They are absolutely great. There's nothing better than an entitled Yankees fan spouting off 25 minutes of bullshit while Simmons gently pokes him to continue the performance.

My only qualm is I miss the old days when Simmons would (presumably) just call him at work.

Yeah, it was a funny bit even if I think it was kind of a work since somehow Jack O always had 50 minutes to talk to his buddy Bill when he was at work.
I'd remind you that this site's members include dozens of lawyers who somehow make time every day to post, often many times per day...

He (at least used to) work for the great state of Connecticut in the legal department of an agency I'm blanking on now. A law school buddy interned there years ago. He told me that there would be instances where Simmons would call and JackO would tell him to call back, but those didn't make the air for obvious reasons.

Man I could listen to Simmons and Jim Miller talk forever about ESPN. I take everything with half truths but at the worst it’s fantastic tea spilling.

I think he’s referring to the Jonah Keri domestic violence guilty plea; the thread title was, I recall, inspired by a Twitter war between Keri and Simmons. Admittedly, that’s a deep cut.

Yes, the thread title was mocking Bill for punching down at Jonah for using the Trade Value column idea without permission. I think it might be a good idea to no longer have that as the thread title given what we now know about Jonah.

What happened?
The thread title derives from Simmons calling out Jonah Keri for "stealing" the trade value column trope Simmons would do annually for basketball and which Keri used for baseball. The issue is that Keri just pled guilty to horrific domestic violence charges against his wife and child. We might be better off not glibly referencing the silly argument between Keri and Simmons, I am guessing.

We should have changed it during his 'Open Mic' comment time frame. One of his several semi-recent going into hiding to escape the twitter backlash moments.

A Simmons podcast, an interview with Peyton Manning, just posted. Can't verfify its listenability, but I'm guessing its going to be pretty good.
It was great. Definitely listen.

Peyton is making the rounds. He was on PMT recently, then on the new Bob Costa HBO show last week, and now Simmons. Needless to say, I will definitely be listening to the Eli and Peyton show on Monday Night Football. Seems like it could be pretty interesting and funny.

Am I the only one who heard he was interviewing Peyton and wondered if he would do a pal-around with Ben Roethlisberger? Both were credibly accused of sexual assault.

The extent that Peyton has gotten to skate on being a "good guy" despite those allegations and the the much less serious but still cruddy allegations that he's a steroid cheat (not that big a deal in the NFL) and blamed it on his wife.

Man , this just led me to read up on that whole thing more. The Mannings are really garbage people.

I agree and his indiscretions need to be brought up more often.

I did listen to the podcast and enjoyed it, though.

That's not Bill's fault though.

Of course not and I did not imply it was. The posts here were about whether the old thread title was appropriate in light of Keri’s crimes. I do not think anybody assigns Bill fault here.

In keeping with the fairness level of this thread, it is definitely Bill’s fault Jonah did what he did.

Guess the lines is up. Time to take a nice 3 mile walk and listen to it. Up on Spotify, not yet on pocket casts
