Dortmund’s fee for Haaland was rumored to be €150 million this summer, which seems like a fair premium to pay over €120 million for Lukaku given the age difference (and ability to sell him in a few years to get that money back). Either Raiola’s fee and the wage demand were too rich for even Abramovich, or Haaland just didn’t want to go there and will just wind up at Real next year once they pay his release clause after this season.

La Liga has received an investment worth $2.7 billion from CVC Capital Partners. Of this amount, something like $250 million will go to Real Madrid and an equal sum to Barcelona. It seems that this amount may give the teams the space to sign new new players or, in Barcelona's case, not have to sell to keep Messi.

La Liga is clearly better off when Real Madrid and Barcelona are stable and strong, but it is frustrating to see them bailed out more for their mismanagement than COVID.

Seems a foregone conclusion now that Grealish to City is done.

happiest man in England may be Southgate. If Kane moves to City he has basically outsourced his job to Pep Guardiola. Can just show up in Qatar and say “go on lads”

the private equity model is to cut costs to squeeze out a return...let's see where the cost reductions will come from

I must have missed when City bought Saka.

I've been fascinated by the aggressive move by investment firms into pro sports - sovereign wealth funds, investors buying multiple teams across sports (FSG & RedBall, Kroenke), and CVC buying stakes in rugby sevens and now La Liga.

This sounds like a somewhat straightforward deal - $3.2b buys CVC 10% of La Liga revenues for some unspecified period & 10% of a new league media and advertising company. I suspect CVC is really into this deal for a cut of the media company, which could really take off in value and also provide them a platform to create similar companies for other leagues across sports. And the risk is mitigated by getting a cut of annual revenues.

Absolute horror tackle today on Wesley Fofana by some piece of shit from Villarreal. 100% intentional as it came right after Fofana had accidentally clipped him in another challenge and he spent a few minutes rolling around the pitch. Got up, looked for revenge, and broke Fofana's leg. He should be banned for a long time by UEFA, assuming they're the body that regulates these kinds of club friendlies.

Watched a video on youtube with some doc explaining the injury and horror tackle is too kind a description - just a CHB-level Hatchet Job. I was going to say Pickford-esque, but it is still too early...

Here's an interesting transfer. A young (21-year-old) Serbian player on a decent career trajectory (good year on loan in Austria, has made senior international appearances for Serbia) willingly going to the MLS from a Bundesliga side. I admittedly really don't follow the MLS so maybe this kind of thing has been happening for a while and TB or others will step in and list off twelve similar examples. But it seems a bit unusual, no?

If Messi signs with City, Kane is going to be a man without a team.

If he had just showed up for training while it got worked out, he could easily spin it as he wanted to be at Spurs. Now, he might have completely screwed himself.

All that said, I bet Messi winds up at PSG.

I'm in shock. Barcelona will end up losing Messi, in large part, because they signed Griezmann, Dembele, and Coutinho. Yikes.

Well he wanted Barca to sign Romero... who instead is heading to Spurs.

As a Tottenham fan, I think it's clear where Messi is heading. Messi, Romero and Lo Celso. He'll be comfortable in London obviously!

Has anyone had a more disastrous boardroom tenure that Bartomeu? I guess Peter Ridsdale at Leeds was worse. Hard to think of another.

Must be an absolutely surreal moment for Romero - working hard to take the next step in his career, hoping to celebrate a huge transfer, and then becoming the reason Messi leaves Barca. This is quite possibly the defining moment of Romero's career, and he's not even involved in it.

Wonder how all the Barca players who reworked their contracts feel right now.

Will be interesting to see the ripple effect. PSG has insisted they aren’t moving Mbappe, but if they get Messi, maybe they sell Mbappe to Real and get a transfer fee instead of letting him walk next year.

I've been holding back on posting this, but I think the Kane stuff has been overblown a bit. If he comes back to Spurs, continues to be the consummate pro he was his entire career up until a couple of days ago, and he is on good form, almost all will be forgiven by Yiddos--myself included.

Yeah, no Liverpool fans care anymore that Gerrard handed in a transfer request a few weeks after winning the European Cup.

Yeah, "man-without-a-team" seems pretty hyperbolic. He's damaged himself somewhat, but if he stays for this season, he will score a brace against Arsenal and be mostly forgiven.

I assume most of us are Stateside and I think the player movement dynamics in US pro sports has conditioned us to stuff like this, but across the pond it does seem like fans continue to take things more personally (for understandable and legitimate reasons).

Messi would give such a commercial boost to most clubs that his wages would to a significant degree pay for themselves if the club can manage the COVID cash flow issues. There's nobody close to him in terms of shirt sales, sponsorship value, etc.

His profile doesn't feel that unusual. It would be more unusual if he had really "made it" in the Bundesliga, but given that his only success so far has been in the Serbian league and the Austrian league, MLS should be a moderate step up in standard of play.

Given that MLS has suddenly become much more heavily scouted, it's also not a dead end if he improves to Big Five league quality. As an example, Przemyslaw Frankowski moved to the Chicago Fire from the Polish league, made the squad for the Euros, and is now on the verge of a move to Ligue 1. And he's a good player, but it's hardly like he's the crème de la crème of MLS.

The only alternative that makes sense to me here is that Barca is flashing a real warning signal to Tebas that if something isn't worked out immediately, La Liga is losing Messi. I know others don't think La Liga's TV deal move to ESPN is a big deal, but I'm confident Tebas does, and losing Messi on the eve of the season is catastrophe.

Is it? Messi is going to retire long before the ESPN rights expire. Obviously they probably didn’t expect him to leave this year, but it was inevitable.
