Love this move. Shores up DE and the pass rush and the cost was 8 spots in the draft.

I know it's sacrilege, but could this be a F$ck It type of year? Throw down the gauntlet of #6, 19-0, back to back, all that? That could be the way Brady would go out and transition to the JG era.

As a sophomore the year before, Ealy was given a third round grade by the NFL Draft Advisory Board, which is typically conservative when projecting the draft positions of underclassmen.[4][5] Following his breakout junior campaign, Ealy was a projected first round pick by numerous outlets, including the Panthers General Manager Dave Gettleman,[6] with some projecting him as a potential top 10 selection.[7][8][9] His combination of length, athleticism, and versatility drew comparisons to players including Robert Quinn, Michael Bennett, and Chandler Jones.[8][10] Dallas Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones noted after the 2014 NFL Draft that had the Cowboys not traded the number 47 overall selection in a deal to move up to select Boise State defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence, they would have used that pick to draft Ealy, whom they regarded as an immediate starter.[11]
Also tied the SB sack record with 3.

Great move it seems – tho I'm increasingly finding that I have to be comfortable with all their moves being a 1 or 2 year thing, maybe Gilmore aside. The nature of being a Belichick fan in today's NFL it seems.

Gettleman took his stupid pills after lunch. Great trade by BB. Now get Cooks and find a way to keep Butler and Hightower.

Not apples to apples, but it makes the Collins trade seem better for the Pats. The Browns got a half year of Collins in exchange for the 103rd pick. The Pats will get a full year of Ealy for dropping from 64 to either 72 or 98. Either way the Pats got a way better deal.

Wow. I'm not sure I understand why Carolina did this? Seems like a huge win for the Pats.

Bennett --> Allen
Ryan --> Gillmore
Long --> Ealy
Kept: Harmon, Branch, Develin

Major players that either need to be re-signed or replaced: Hightower, Blount, Sheard.

As long as they can get Hightower done, make a few small tweak and the team is in real good shape heading into the draft.

This is the kind of stuff that really makes you chuckle when people toss around BUT CHEATRIOTS*.

Enjoy all of this as long as we have the guy playing a different game than pretty much everyone else.

Chris Burke, si.com: Bill Belichick never stops. Ealy has not been anywhere near as good as Super Bowl 50 made him look—he probably would have been MVP had the Panthers won that game. Nevertheless, he's a 25-year-old pass rusher with 14.0 career sacks, headed into a contract year. And the Patriots coughed up all of eight spots in the draft to acquire him. They now will pick at No. 72; the Panthers at No. 64, adding an extra second-round pick.

Just 8 picks? Really?

If so, heist.

Bye bye Sheard
Sheard signed with the Colts
Moments after news broke of the New England Patriots acquiring EDGE Kony Ealy in a trade from the Carolina Panthers, ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Field Yates report that Patriots free agent EDGE Jabaal Sheard will be signing with the Indianapolis Colts.

Anyone else concerned that we basically got him for free?
Why would it be a concern? CAR is deep at the position and didn't want to spend $1M on him after they re-signed Peppers, Patriots need some depth at Edge rusher and special teams so figured they'd take a no risk dice roll on him. He's basically the replacement for Mingo.

So, you expect Ealy to be a STer? I'm perfectly fine with the move but this is a young player who's had success on a big stage, has a skill set that is in high demand, and is making relative peanuts.

I'm surprised nobody wanted to top this. Or maybe I'm just manufacturing concern because being a Pats fan is pretty fun right now.
