Pats sign Reggie Wayne: Colts Fans Collectively Vomit

Timing of the news reports suggest Wayne was signed before he had a chance to get to Green Bay. Could the signing have preemptively thwarted a rival? Or does Occam apply and he was signed because the Pats need him?
There are a number of reasons to sign Wayne, but signing him to keep him from going to GB is likely at the bottom of that list.

I love the "I get it, its about the money" quote. Like his motivation couldn't be about competitive desire. It's not like ge turned down an offer from the colts to sign with a rival.

Colts fans referring to the Patriots as cheaters is rich, I'll give them that.

As far as the bozo who said "Patriots fans don't have the balls to come here" or other such drivel; this is the first I've heard of a Colts forum, I just assumed they didn't have one as they were too busy harvesting fucking corn all day long.  Ever drive through Indiana?  It's a real treat; corn on the left, corn on the right for three hours.

If he does stick, he'll lose Brady pretty quickly if he keeps up with the alligator arms I seem to remember from last year. Not that I blame any player being tentative laying out for a ball over the middle.

Of course I could be mistaking him for someone else since I have been drinking bud light limes this evening, aka jolly green Giants ejaculate.

Well. This is awkward:

Can we go after the fans and team in general rather than where they live?

This is a fan base who generally feels that their team is a model of purity, with a former coach that was granted to them by the grace of God and allowed them to look down upon all others.  The reality is much different, as the Colts as a franchise have had as many issues as most teams and more than some, from a drug addled owner, to player conduct issues (DWIs come to mind), PEDS, suspicions of piped in crowd noise, tampering with visitor locker room environmental conditions, and a few claims of radio communication blackouts, and tanking a season for Luck.  And of course clearly influencing the whole Deflategate mess.

Most of which seem never to stick for whatever reason.

Plus they're in Indiana!

Edit: good points re: the fan base. They've always been holier than thou. Hopefully Wayne has enough left in the tank to contribute to at least one more Colts beatdown this season.

By all means (I mean, not that I'm an authority or anything), attack the fans for their behavior or attitude or whatever that relates to how they approach football.

But attacking them as fans based on their profession, or based on their geography, is just small-minded snobbery.

Sorry to disappoint ya. It most likely is just their auto-filtering:

"I can't hate on Reggie, but I sure as **** won't root for him."
"Reggie is still a Colt, just going under cover, will sabotage that **** org from the inside out."

Plus, the passive-aggro level is high over there (bold is the poster's):

"We chose to move on from him"

Seriously.. this guy Doyel is a tool:

"But Colts fans have the right to their opinion on that, and roughly 25 percent of the Twitter reaction to the mere possibility that Wayne would play for that team, and catch passes from that quarterback, so soon after that game — the one where the Patriots (unnecessarily) cheated during a 45-7 blowout of the Colts in the AFC title game — was ugly."

I love this thread, but I think I love that Wikipedia entry more.

During the lead up to the next time the Patriots host Indiana, they should pipe in crowd noise from the Colts stadium during practice or something.

And then let an ice weasel eviscerate an effigy of Tony Dungy.

The #Patriots 1-year deal for WR Reggie Wayne is worth up to nearly $3M, including incentives. Almost $500K up front, source said.

I'm going to play the pie in the sky optimist here.

Wayne had 1355 receiving yards in 2012. He tore his ACL in Oct 2013 and tore his triceps in 2014. He is now 2 years removed from ACL reconstruction (better speed and cutting than last year) and 9 months out from surgery to repair the torn triceps (now able to fully extend his arms for passes).

His age is a factor, but I don't see the NEP handing out that contract for training camp fodder. If he can stay healthy in 2015 he could become a favorite possession receiver for TB.

So earlier in the thread I saw some mentions of older WRs that did not pan out (i.e. Holt, Galloway, Chad Johnson) and some speculation as to why.  Undoubtedly there is value in trying to understand these failures and consider whether these same issues might undermine Wayne's ability to add value to the Patriots at the ripe old age of 36, however, what were the hallmarks of successful ~36 year old receivers?

I am the farthest thing from a Howie Schwab, but off hand I do recall a handful of older receivers of somewhat similar physical size that aged admirably such as Jimmy Smith, Tim Brown, Jerry Rice, and to a lesser extent Keenan McCardell.  It should be noted that good fortune in terms of injuries appears to be a relatively consistent theme for these players, but interestingly Rice played 2 games the year before his age 36 season due to a torn ACL (same injury as Wayne if I'm not mistaken), but still had a very productive season.  So I'm curious, what was it about these guys that allowed them to age so gracefully?

If this topic has already been addressed in another area my apologies.

For 2 of the guys you mentioned, Rice and Brown, you've got hall of fame level talent to begin with, so the drop off from there as old age creeps in would be less than some JAG who is aging.

I have to imagine that with $500K guaranteed Wayne has shown BB he has something left in the tank. It will make the next preseason game interesting at the very least.

Eh on the signing. Think he's probably similar if not a little worse than Deion Branch from a few years ago. Wayne looked cooked last year. Even if he's healthy I can't see him as anything other than a short route guy, and the team is loaded in those. I mean I'd rather have him on the roster than not, but my expectations are like 50 receptions / 650 yards / 5 td.

Wayne might not be Rice or Brown, but he has had a pretty freaking great career. Time will tell whether Wayne has anything left or not, but I think 9per's question is valid.

I'm not sure those stats would make me say Eh. I'd take that production from the #4 WR in this offense, no problem.

ummm 50 for 650 and 5 TDs would be an awesome contribution from Wayne.  Considering the other number of options on this offense, those numbers would indicate that Wayne had a huge year for the Pats.

Wayne has definitely been slowing down of late, but in a passing system like the Patriots' (assuming he can pick up the system), his sure hands / route running / knowledge of how to sit in a zone will absolutely play up.  I see him playing something like a Jabar Gaffney role, catching ~40 balls for 500 yards.  Nothing fancy, but when the alternative might be throwing a guy like Jonathan Krause out there, I'm happy with that.  Assuming good health, there will be about 600 targets to share among the receiving options:

Gronk: 130-140
Edelman/Amendola: 175-200 combined
Running Backs: ~75

That leaves ~200 targets for the receivers and backup TEs.  Most of the rest of that share of targets simply depends on LaFell's health.  If he's out there, he'll get >50% of those; if not, Wayne will get a shot to be that 4th option in the passing game.

What confuses me about this pick-up is what routes does he run?  Gronk, Edelman and Amendola all tend to operate in the same ares of the field that Wayne might want to be in.  Add in Lafell (who often runs slants as well) plus either a second TE (Chandler or Hooman) and an RB (the Vereen replacement) and I just don't know where all these bodies end up.
