Played strong safety last year for the Eagles but was a corner prior to that.

I have never heard of Mills, but that does not prevent it from adding to my euphoria today!

I'm not a big Jalen Mills guy. Kind of a CB/S tweener with size and not a ton of speed. Will be interesting to see how the Pats use him.

Jesus, this is like the third day of the draft on crack . . . can't keep up with all of these signings.

Seems like a definite insurance pick-up for possible departures of Gilmore, or JCJ, Chung, etc. Any cap-ologists tracking where all this leaves them in terms of real dollars left to spend this year?

Chung will be 34 before the season starts and he hasn't played since January 2020. Whether he makes this year's team is up in the air.

I don’t think this necessarily means they’re moving Gilmore, just like I don’t think Wise/Judon means they’re trying to move Wino.

But it certainly means it’s easier to use Gilmore/JC/Wino as trade chips for moving up in the draft for a Fields/Lance if they really have to. Flexibility is nice.

I don't think this has any bearing on Gilmore. I think this more likely spells the end for Chung.
I'm not sure it means anything yet. Theres so much volatility in the secondary right now, Mills is a good safety net. Gilmore and Jackson could be out the door, they lost depth with Jason McCourty leaving, Chung may be washed...

They also love their safeties. I really wouldnt be shocked to see Duggar/Phillips/Mills/Chung on the field together occasionally as safety/linebacker hybrids in passing situations. The Patriots are slow at linebacker and they arent great in coverage. Having two of those guys play in the box and two play safety on a third and 7 is better than our ILB's seeing the field, frankly.

Am I crazy to think that this move may signal a lack of faith in JoeJuan? I know you can't really read into anything in March but wondering where he sits entering his pivotal 3rd year. For now, guess he's just a depth piece.

I don't think this move signals that. Not super confident in JoeJuan, but D-Mac, J-Mac, and Chung are old and and Gilmore and Jackson are trade bait so you definitely could use some more defensive backs.

Fair enough. Clearly seems like a move that gets the team a quality starter and more options to move some of the current roster in trade. Will be interesting to see how it all comes together.

Mills was very physical when he played corner. He also does a Mutombo-like finger-wag after he breaks up a play. Definitely doesn't lack confidence.

I was just coming here to post this. Day late and a dollar short I guess.

Guy clearly hates his coach.
But really very cool story. Mills was born in 1994 (yikes to all of us here) and grew up watching BB win SB after SB in the early aughts. I understand his awe of the legendary Coach

He had a really good year and was sorely missed when he went down. Jonathan Jones is a great slot guy with his tremendous speed and was a serviceable #2 corner but when you are expecting him to be your #1 you’re going to get burned a lot.

He’s obviously not in his league, talent-wise, but I wonder if Mills in 2021 went thru a little of what Gilmore did his first season, struggling to pick up the defense.
