I see we went for old players and good Wonderlic's this year.

On the bright side, I guess their rookie contracts take them through most of their prime (assuming they make the team).

"Houston Baptist, then Western Kentucky"

Well, Stidham changed colleges too, and that unlocked his NFL success as a QB.

This pick may have seemed shocking to some, but he has a live arm and can slot in as our current backup

Bill's gonna let him touch the ball like 10 times total this year and still flip him for a second-round pick next year.

I've been joking around about this pick, but he's a clone of Mac Jones playing style (to my limited eye). That's a pretty solid insurance policy against injury and offensive cohesion. I can't see 4 QBs, so either Hoyer is moved to coach, or Stidham is gone. I don't think Hoyer is viable on field at this point, but they probably want to retain his voice in the room. Who is the Pats QB coach?

Interesting pick out of left field for this uninformed observer.

But yeah I guess it's really which glass would they rather break in case of emergency.

I think they will keep Hoyer because having him is like having a QB coach.
There is a job for people who coach quarterbacks. Doesn't even count against the salary cap.

But yeah it's a good tiebreaker which is why I'd be surprised if they kept Stidham over Hoyer because it's pretty clear they don't trust Stidham.

This seems like an extreme reaction from Sharp. Not sure how the draft pros on here feel about him but I remember him being more rational than some?

the Patriots pick of QB Bailey Zappe doesn't bode well for Mac Jones

or is just flat out odd

the only times since 1990 a team:

drafted a QB top-15, then

used ANOTHER pick on a QB the next year in the top-140:

HOU: David Carr then Dave Ragone

NE: Mac Jones then Bailey Zappe

Sharp is trying to get back on The Ringer NFL podcasts I guess. Anyways his little rule conveniently ignores how RG3 and Cousins were taken in the SAME draft. I’m sure there are other examples his filtering criteria is designed to exclude.

A daft tweet.

Yeah, that is really just an odd take. The Pats have a backup who is 42 and barely playable and more of a coach, and a 3rd stringer who stinks and is on an expiring contract. It’s not that surprising they took a QB.

It would be maybe a data point if Ragone went & took Carr's job or Carr didn't start for the Texans the next 4 years but umm? Yeah. Maybe just post the interesting oddity without the useless "conclusion".

If Zippy ends up better than Mac, we’ll be…in pretty good shape. But that’s not what’s happening here. They are just layering the position. Hopefully he tells good jokes and gives Mac good notes on the sidelines.

"Doesn't bode well for Mac" is an absurd take, esepcially given that Zappe sounds like a poor man's Mac.

If they were going to draft a QB because they don't like Mac, it wouldn't be Zappe.

Highest QB wonderlic bodes well for his joke telling hopefully.

I've heard more than one sports radio guy say the Pats might take a QB in the 3/4th. Stidham is clearly not the guy, Hoyer is a fossil, etc. Doesn't bother me at all. The pair of RBs actually seems weirder.

I don't think it's weird at all. They don't value the position and have no intention to pay Harris or any other RB and so will keep a constant flux of mid round draft picks coming into the rotation to fill the role. It's a great approach and one I honestly wish they'd take with guards as well.

Yeah RB is a position that you can get good talent rounds 4-6 and there are decent odds that only 1 of the 5 RBs on last year's roster is here next year

I see that for sure - just seems like RB is the one position right now where they don't have immediate needs. But I guess BB didn't get where he is by not looking a few years down the road at all times.

Exactly. The hot take machine is cranked to max throughout on draft weekend.

I like this pick simply based on the insane college production and because if he can be the primary backup after this year then you actually save a lot of money vis-a-vis paying backup QB money to some veteran.

Plus, if he ever does outplay Mac Jones and win the starter's job, how great will it be to have a QB named Zappe?

A lot of Falcons fans on a website I frequent (The Falcoholic) were really hot on Zappe coming into the draft and wanted to take a flyer on him in the 4th or 5th round rather than targeting one of the higher-tier prospects. Just throwing that out there.
Interesting, thanks

The Falcoholic is the Brock Landers of football fan site names.

I like this pick. Nice to have a QB to dream on, or lean on in case of injuries. As things stood, there was no chance to win anything with Hoyer or Stidham.

The talking heads clearly dont understand Zappe will backup Mac and then Mac will be traded for 7 first rounders or rupture a spleen, and then Zappe wins 7 sb. Classic BB
