Does Stidham survive the afternoon as a Patriot? How about Raiders trade back pick 164 for Stidham and pick 210?
Not that it means much on an NFL field but the strengths he is quoted as having here, his college production, and the story behind him are all interesting enough to read about.

This pick may have seemed shocking to some, but he has a live arm and can slot in as our current backup
Hoyer could be gone, too, sure, if this kid lights up camp/Pats want to free up the cap dollars, but hard to see Stidham being here instead of Hoyer.
I've been joking around about this pick, but he's a clone of Mac Jones playing style (to my limited eye). That's a pretty solid insurance policy against injury and offensive cohesion. I can't see 4 QBs, so either Hoyer is moved to coach, or Stidham is gone. I don't think Hoyer is viable on field at this point, but they probably want to retain his voice in the room. Who is the Pats QB coach?

There is a job for people who coach quarterbacks. Doesn't even count against the salary cap.
But yeah it's a good tiebreaker which is why I'd be surprised if they kept Stidham over Hoyer because it's pretty clear they don't trust Stidham.
This seems like an extreme reaction from Sharp. Not sure how the draft pros on here feel about him but I remember him being more rational than some?

Sharp is trying to get back on The Ringer NFL podcasts I guess. Anyways his little rule conveniently ignores how RG3 and Cousins were taken in the SAME draft. I’m sure there are other examples his filtering criteria is designed to exclude.

Yeah, that is really just an odd take. The Pats have a backup who is 42 and barely playable and more of a coach, and a 3rd stringer who stinks and is on an expiring contract. It’s not that surprising they took a QB.
This is such a laughable take. The Patriots took Rohan Davey in the 4th round in the draft immediately following Brady's first Super Bowl win.
Or maybe they wanted a backup QB since there current one is like 50 years old or a QB who will be cut prior to the season.
"Doesn't bode well for Mac" is an absurd take, esepcially given that Zappe sounds like a poor man's Mac.

I've heard more than one sports radio guy say the Pats might take a QB in the 3/4th. Stidham is clearly not the guy, Hoyer is a fossil, etc. Doesn't bother me at all. The pair of RBs actually seems weirder.
I don't think it's weird at all. They don't value the position and have no intention to pay Harris or any other RB and so will keep a constant flux of mid round draft picks coming into the rotation to fill the role. It's a great approach and one I honestly wish they'd take with guards as well.
Yeah RB is a position that you can get good talent rounds 4-6 and there are decent odds that only 1 of the 5 RBs on last year's roster is here next year
I see that for sure - just seems like RB is the one position right now where they don't have immediate needs. But I guess BB didn't get where he is by not looking a few years down the road at all times.
I like this pick simply based on the insane college production and because if he can be the primary backup after this year then you actually save a lot of money vis-a-vis paying backup QB money to some veteran.
A lot of Falcons fans on a website I frequent (The Falcoholic) were really hot on Zappe coming into the draft and wanted to take a flyer on him in the 4th or 5th round rather than targeting one of the higher-tier prospects. Just throwing that out there.

I like this pick. Nice to have a QB to dream on, or lean on in case of injuries. As things stood, there was no chance to win anything with Hoyer or Stidham.
The talking heads clearly dont understand Zappe will backup Mac and then Mac will be traded for 7 first rounders or rupture a spleen, and then Zappe wins 7 sb. Classic BB
