Nordin has easy power. If he can keep the mechanics in check and refine the rough edges, he could be a keeper.

It does still grind a bit that we had the man the myth Younghoe Koo in our grasp and let him go, but I'm happy to reach for some more upside here.

Pats have signed Malcolm Perry...former Navy QB, who was cut by the Dolphins.
There couldn’t have been a more predictable pickup. Was hoping Perry would slip through the waivers and make it back to the practice squad.

Seemed to make some decent strides as a slot receiver, but Miami is too deep at WR this year. Can see him carving out a nice ST/slot role for NE. He’s slippery with the ball in his hands.

In order to have signed Perry, wouldn't there need to be a corresponding cut (or trade or other removal of one player from the 53-man roster)?

Did he take any snaps at all as a QB? Asking to avoid a discussion of using him as a third QB option

Not with Miami in a game. I believe they may have run 2-3 plays with him at Wildcat last year, but he never attempted a pass.

He’s a candidate to dust off the Edelman trick play once or twice a year.

Right- you can only be signed to the PS if you clear waivers.

(EDIT - the exception being the game day callups being able to be returned to the PS once/yr without waivers)

Harry, I suppose, could go on returnable IR
True, but I thought that the corresponding move would need to be concomitant (but maybe Perry has merely agreed to join the Pats and has not actually yet officially joined them).

Changed the thread title to reflect the shifting 53-man roster discussions. There will be plenty of transactions before the actual kickoff.

Wouldn't the Harry move have created the roster spot?

It'll likely all breakdown like this:

Wed: Patriots claim Malcolm Perry, release Harvey Langi

Thur: N'Keal Harry officially on IR, Patriots re-sign Langi

I think it’s because a player has to be on the 53-man through 9/1 in order to be placed on IR while retaining DTR eligibility, whereas the successful waiver claim for Perry had to be processed today.

I love NFL transaction rule arcana.

Point of order.... I know I don't have much standing to raise it.
But there is no such thing after cutdown day as putting someone on IR-DTR. Anyone on IR can return. The DTR designation is a(n) (currently) outdated concept. Anyone on IR now (placed on IR after 1600EDT on 31AUG), can return.

With Harry on the IR, it is a mandatory minimum of 3 weeks or can he come off before that?

I wonder if they'll have any interest in K Jake Verity. Strong preseason with Ravens but couldn't upstage Tucker. He made it through waivers and signed with Ravens practice squad.

There are a few articles from late June, if you google "Brian Hoyer vaccination", that speculate his job is in jeopardy because he refuses to get the vaccine. Clearly his job wasn't in danger given how this played out, but this combined with him wearing masks is likely confirmation of his status. It'll be interesting to see how Bill tries to get a 3rd QB, or keep someone close by. Is Stidham's injury status confirmed? Last we saw was, I believe a 3 month timeline that would have him returning in late September?
His job was in danger because he sucks at his job and looks like a middle school social studies teacher.

It's a moot point now, but do you think Harry's shoulder injury kept him on the roster? For as frustrating as he is, he did show some flashes in the preseason + positive reports coming out of camp. Quite fitting that he got hurt while dropping a dime. Guy can't catch a break.

I'm not sure that is his issue. I'll contradict my last post here, but whatever.

In 2020 he saw 57 targets with only 1 drop. Not terrible, right?

However, he caught 33 of 57 targets, (57% completion rate when targeted) and his average depth of target was only 8.0. Low percentage catch rate, minimal YAC (3.2 in 2020) and apparently he is only trusted to run short routes. Can't wait for week 4 and the return of Harry!

Harry seemed to have some chemistry with Mac but was hardly targeted by Cam. Mac being the starter probably helps Harry’s cause.

He landed hard on the shoulder, immediately came out, and was wearing a sling. I suppose it's possible that it was all an act.

If you both unnecessarily dive for *and* miss the well-thrown bomb, then you better come up hurt.

He's not an all pro receiver, I agree, but we're being unnecessarily uncharitable here. To my eyes, he sold out his body (perhaps unnecessarily, yes) on a good faith effort to catch the ball and took most of his 225 on that shoulder. Could be mild separation or whatever. Better receiver probably doesn't leave his feet, sure.

Started hilarious but really took an existential turn there.
I’d buy his self-help book. Man that was actually reasonably insightful. On that clip alone I’d probably pay 200 US Dollars to see him and BB have 4 beers together.

Imagine him trying to explain a missed kick like that to Bill? It would be like dividing by zero.

Yeah, oddly the Nascar thing actually started to make sense there: trying to keep a repeatable motion while massive @#%$ is moving around you at 200mph.

Gotta go practice my cornhole for the weekend matches...

So the sudden inability to land a bag on the board is similar to kickers totally losing their swing? I can see it. Just toss in the a few million watching you and laughing, a few Twitter trends about you and the threat of getting fired. Sounds awesome!

I was listening to an NFL Radio discussion this week about having two kickers on the roster and apparently fewer than half the teams have done this ... which means if their kickers test positive for COVID late in the week, it could get dicey for them

I was thinking yesterday (first mistake) that having Folk on the PS for the first two weeks of the season allows the Pats better able to stash Nordin after week 2. Pats elevate Folk week 1, get the "free" revert to PS after the game. Elevate Folk week 2, waive Nordin after the game/Monday/whatever. At this point of the season, no team is likely desperate for an unproven kicker, so it isn't worth a waiver claim on Nordin (as I understand, he'd need to be added to the 53 man roster... that is the key part of this logic... a team couldn't make a waiver claim to stash him). Then the Pats sign Nordin to the PS for the rest of the year. Is that about right?
