It makes sense other than the fact that Hoyer sucks; that game he started last year vs the Chiefs was replacement/scab player level bad during the strike year, Hoyer is beyond terrible.
If a team chooses to carry 3, he's a great 3rd QB to be able to mentor Jones. But Agree he's a very weak 2

Was there ever a reputable source for this rumor?
There are a few articles from late June, if you google "Brian Hoyer vaccination", that speculate his job is in jeopardy because he refuses to get the vaccine. Clearly his job wasn't in danger given how this played out, but this combined with him wearing masks is likely confirmation of his status. It'll be interesting to see how Bill tries to get a 3rd QB, or keep someone close by. Is Stidham's injury status confirmed? Last we saw was, I believe a 3 month timeline that would have him returning in late September?

If I was Miami, I would claim Hoyer. Of course, they won't because they should want to optimize their roster but it would be great gamesmanship.

They'd have to sign him, which would mean that he'd control whether he went there, something he might not want to do if he's inclined to come back to the Pats (assuming that's the plan).

Do we know the Pats' 53-man roster yet (at least as it stands for today), or are there more cuts/moves required (that we don't have knowledge of)? It's hard to keep track. The roster was due to be set at 4:00.

I am stunned on Nordin. It is such a high profile spot to have that much uncertainty. If he works, then I give a ton of credit to the Pats scouting, development and coaching. Frankly, I thought it was a joke when they invited him to camp. He was not very good with Michigan.
BB actually has a fairly long leash when it comes to young kickers.

In AV's rookie year, he made 77.1% of his FG's, including going 8/14 from 40-49 yards. He also missed 3 extra points that year (back when it was a chip shot).
He bounced back a bit in his 2nd year, on 6 fewer attempts, hitting 86.2% of his kicks.
In year 3, he wasn't good. hitting 79%, including 9/14 from 30-39 yards.
In year 4, 78.8%, hitting only 10/14 from 30-49 yards combined.

In his rookie year, Gost only hit 76.9% of his attempts, and only made 70% from 30-39 and 50% from 40-49. He finished his career at 86.3%.

I think Nordin will have some leash, probably not as much as those guys, but while folks will be calling for his head when he misses his first 38 yarder, or extra point, I think BB will stick with him for a bit.

What does AV have to do with BB?
Yeah, I forgot, AV was here before BB. But in BB's first 2 years here, AV wasn't very good either. He went 81.8 and 80.0% in BB's first two seasons, and honestly, there wasn't much reason to believe he'd get better. Through 6 seasons at that point, he had averaged 80.4% on 199 field goal attempts.

It was after that 2nd season that he obviously made the kicks in the snow, and in the SB, and then he comes out the next season and leads the NFL at 90.0% in 2002.

FG% has increased steadily over the last 20 years and low-80s FG percentages were above average at the time.

(FG% has actually increased steadily over the past 60 years or whatever)

I remember he missed that kick against KC that, IIRC started or accelerated the wheels coming off the disastrous 1999 season.

I wish you had read them.

A report from UStadium stated the following: "He won’t be allowed to be physically present in the meetings room and will have to join remotely. Something to watch."
Which is from a tweet, which is from Some Guy.

Big surprises there - though we had already heard about kicker-gate - are, IMO, Folk and Cody Davis. Everything I'd read and heard had Davis beating out beloved S/T player King b/c of the former's guaranteed $$$ and the latter's injury history/age.

Possibly the lowlight of Adam's Pats career, but the wheels didn't truly come off until after the bye a few weeks later. Pats would have been 5-0 if Adam had hit that chippy to beat KC, but they were still 6-2 heading into the bye. They lost six of their next seven, finished 8-8, and that was the end of the Pete Carroll era.

On Nordin, it was fairly obvious that he had significant tools to work with. The question was always how soon would he be able to put it together? Would he be ready for week one? We're about to find our answer, one way or another. Has to be encouraging that they see enough in the kid to give him the job outright, as opposed to trying to stash him on the PS and merely develop him for the future.

Looking back at an eventful day...I'm somewhat surprised that Miles Bryant got cut, given the general stinkiness of the back-end options at that position.

Also that we're apparently going with 4 wide receivers (plus Gunner, who I refuse to grant WR status until he actually catches something).

To SMU's point, they almost have to be in the FA market at those two spots, right?

I thought either Wilkinson or Zuber would stick.

I expressed some concern about Bryant's roster spot when they traded for Wade, but I imagine he'd be a candidate to bring back as a practice squad guy.

WR seems like the spot where there is a bunch of options cut today who are interesting. Some vets, some rookies

When can they put someone on IR-DTR? I thought they had to wait until after week 1, but they obviaouly aren't going into week 1 with one QB..

Anyone on the 53-man active roster after cut downs (ie, today) can be placed on IR, and anybody placed on IR can be designated to return. So, I think a player who is on the 53-man roster after 4PM today can technically be placed on IR as a transaction effective tomorrow and can be DTR at any point thereafter (provided they player misses at least three games).

If a player is placed on IR any day during camp up through today, like Jennings, he’s out for the season and is ineligible to be DTR because he wasn’t on the 53-man active roster when he was placed on IR. They could be placed on the PUP list if they were already on the PUP list, like Gilmore, which makes them eligible to return after six weeks.

click through, twitter cropped the image.
Okay, that makes sense.

There are 54 guys on this roster (whereas there were a lot more a few hours ago). Which one doesn't belong?

EDIT: Looks like Terez Hall is on the Pats' web site roster and not on Reiss's list. Maybe the web site intern forgot to remove him?

OK, so anyone teams put on IR before they cut down to 53 is done for the year, but afterward players can come back. That makes sens and would explain cutting Hoyer today.

Isn’t Hoyer unvaccinated too? Complicates the quick return somewhat as well.
Re Hoyer and vaccination:

During the game against the Giants on Sunday, I was paying careful attention to masked players on the sidelines. There were three: Newton, Bourne, and Jakobi Myers. Lots of sideline shots and I didn’t see any other masked players.

There were multiple sideline shots of Hoyer, including one where he was sitting, sans helmet, next to McCorkle and McDaniels. Based on the protocols, I would be fairly confident deducing that he is vaccinated.

Here's a rundown on recent moves to get down to 53 (apologies if this has been posted -- I haven't seen it). It appears that Terez Hall, who I originally thought may have made the roster, was placed on PUP. I imagine we'll start hearing about PS additions but I'm not sure about timing of that. As early as today?

------------------
Waived/released: OLB Tashawn Bower, DB Myles Bryant, OT Korey Cunningham, CB Michael Jackson, DT Bill Murray, WR Tre Nixon, CB D'Angelo Ross, OL Will Sherman, DT Nick Thurman (injured), WR Kristian Wilkerson, WR Isaiah Zuber, DT Montravius Adams, S Adrian Colbert, C James Ferentz, K Nick Folk, QB Brian Hoyer, TE Matt LaCosse, QB Cam Newton, G Alex Redmond, DT Akeem Spence, CB Dee Virgin

Reserve/suspended: S Joshuah Bledsoe (non-football injury), DT Byron Cowart (physically unable to perform), CB Stephon Gilmore (PUP), LB Terez Hall (PUP), LB Anfernee Jennings (injured reserve, ending his season), LB Cameron McGrone (NFI), QB Jarrett Stidham (PUP)

Maybe barely above average. In 1998, AV was 17th in Field Goal %. In 1999, he was 18th. In 2000, he was 15th. In 2001, he was 13th. Then he finished 1st in 2002. Then he finished 24th in 2003.

In his rookie year, Ghost was 23rd. In his 2nd year, Ghost was 87.5% which got him 10th place. That's what I would consider above average.

I think it's pretty clear that with respect to those 2 guys, BB had a pretty long leash by comparison to what we think of BB's leash elsewhere on the field. AV wasn't a good kicker when BB took over, and Ghost was pretty much terrible as a rookie.
