Yep. It was worth a try, but other teams were wise to the fact that they were getting cut anyway.

Also... what's the difference between getting released, getting cut, or getting waived? Are those just different terms for the same action, or do they have different technical applications in the NFL?

This wouldn't surprise me at all, especially since Hoyer is paticularly unlikely to be grabbed on waivers and particularly likely to stick around and wait for the call post-handshake.
Because Hoyer is a vested vet (4+ years experience), he actually wouldn’t need to go through waivers. If he’s cut, he immediately becomes a FA and can sign anywhere.

Actually answered right below. Released is for vested vets- immediately become FA's. Waived are subject to waivers.

Strange that the Pats are trading for an OL from the Chiefs of all teams when that appears to be a position of strength for the Patriots and weakness for Chiefs.
This is my thought as well. KC isn't real strong on the OL, and the Pats are really good, so it seems like a bit of an odd fit. But hey, if there's one position BB does well with, it's offensive linemen.
Last year by the end of the season that was the case but the Chiefs have what should be a good line this year.

LT: Orlando Brown
LG: Thuney
C: Creed Humphrey (rookie)
RG: Trey Smith (rookie - both those guys were top 50 guys to me)
RT: Lucas Niang - he is their weakest link.

Backups are: Andrew Wylie, Nick Allegretti, Mike Remmers, and Dr. Duvernay-Tardif.

Granted the rookies need to succeed but they had some depth there.

Quick add: Trey Smith only dropped for medical reasons. He has been lights out in camp and won a starting role. On our draft review pod @Brand Name and I went over what a steal Smith could be for them if he stays healthy. Oh and Remmers can step up and be around an OK RT if need be.

The Chiefs OL is so interesting this year... they run a lot of mixed zone concepts but they have Brown, Thuney, Humphrey, Smith, and even Niang who are also guys who would do well running more gap/power concepts. I think we're going to see the Chiefs have a really good running game this year and I anticipate they use a wider variety of runs.

The Chiefs' offense is going to be unreal again. They've built a powerhouse over there. Even with a bad OL last year they obviously got to the SB. They've got to be 1 or 1a in terms of Lombardi favorites.

By betting odds they're 1 with the Bucs 1a.

Most places Chiefs around +450, Bucs around +600. Bills are prob consensus 3rd at around +1000.

Curious if Folk stays on the veteran bat phone. It’s hard to gauge what his market might be given his limitations in plus 45 yard attempts and not being an effective kickoff specialist.

Whats funny is that one bad game aside he did.

Then he had that game.
Which would be fine, except that was his rep, that he had tons of skill and lots of ups and downs.
I really wish we hadn't cut Koo when we had him

Pretty excited about this.

Nordin may or may not bomb out but a guy like Folk can be found mid-season with relative ease and there is at least some chance that Nordin irons out his issues and becomes a high quality kicker and a multiyear solution at that position. Seems like a risk worth taking.
Im nervous but ok with it. I was actually more nervous that someone would claim him on waivers if they tried to sneak him on the PS.

The last undrafted rookie kicker worked out pretty good too.

BB just wanted to keep his streak of UDFA making the opening 53 intact.

I wonder if Nordin will handle kickoffs, save some wear and tear on Bailey (as they will be scoring a lot more this year). I noticed one on Sunday which he put through the endzone on the fly.

Totally agree, MMS. The upside on Nordin is a long-range kicker we haven't had in a long time.
I think this is it. Folk is probably a better kicker right now, but he is what he is. Nordin, if he reaches his potential, could be much better, and be cheap for multiple years.

They should have just cut Bailey when they annointed Mac the starter, since there will be no more punt situations.

Plus, this way Folk's salary is not guaranteed. They can bring him back at any point week to week.

I sort of wonder if the plan here is to wait until after week 1 to attempt to slide Nordin through to the practice squad.

Tbh I kind of feel like Nordins - big legs who might lack the consistency to be NFL kickers - are more widespread than Folks (steady / unspectacular top-25 kickers). But Folk might not be 100% healthy either.

Folk is coming off a very good season and plenty of teams are looking for a kicker during the season, which is why anyone decent is still kicking into their 40s. He won't be out of work for long.

That's fair. BB seems to think Nordin is more fixable than most of the other inconsistent big legs out there, however, and I'm happy to see how that pans out.

I am stunned on Nordin. It is such a high profile spot to have that much uncertainty. If he works, then I give a ton of credit to the Pats scouting, development and coaching. Frankly, I thought it was a joke when they invited him to camp. He was not very good with Michigan.

There has been uncertainty at the position since they moved on from Ghost. Keeping Nordin is an effort to reduce uncertainty - if he’s serviceable, he’s your long-term kicker. If he sucks, they cut him or trade him and go out and sign one of the many veteran kickers waiting by their phone for someone to call them as happens every year.

98.5 just said that Mac Jones was the only QB at the media portion of Patriots practice.

PHI cut two WRs Fulghum and Hightower. I wonder if NE will take a flier on either after having extensive looks at them in joint practices. Fulghum managed over 500yds in a handful of starts last year.

Fair take since there's likely a couple that BB would like to have on the ST IR. With Cam gone you kind of need to keep Hoyer on the active roster. He's not much of a risk to get signed elsewhere in the 24 hours.
Given that Hoyer is terrible and that his only value is that he knows the system, I think it's safe to say he won't be picked up.

There was like a month where he looked excellent last year, then he crashed back to earth. He's not entirely uninteresting as a 4th WR if Harry gets IR'd.
