Surprised I didn't see mention of this (or I clearly missed it). My first SOSH newsbreak!

Patriots are giving RB James White a one-year, $2.5 million fully-guaranteed deal, per source. Deal official, as @JFowlerESPN reported it would be.
— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) <a href="View: https://twitter.com/AdamSchefter/status/1374757954679869446?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw

Patriots are giving RB James White a one-year, $2.5 million fully-guaranteed deal, per source. Deal official, as
@JFowlerESPN
reported it would be.

Sadly it’s not a newsbreak as it’s been mentioned in the 2021 offense thread. That said I love the signing and the price is incredible. I can’t imagine this isn’t a pretty sizable discount because he loves the team

Discussed in the offense thread but new threads are always good.
I thought he was worth his own thread. I mean, he was one if the first passcatching RB specialists I recall. Yeah, he was Brady's co-Binky, but he can be an important cog in the offense. Particularly if there's a rookie QB they're trying to develop. He's a good easy target.

White re-signing is unquestionably thread worthy, but I'm confused by the bolded part. Pass catching RBs have been around forever and I'm having trouble remembering a time when a Belichick coached Patriots team didn't have one. Am I missing something?

Maybe he is too young to remember Kevin Faulk?

Ya, slot WR and 3rd down RB are positions the Patriots pass from one guy to the next like a baton.

Faulk --> Woodhead --> Vereen --> White

Kevin Faulk, Shane Vereen, Dion Lewis all come to mind immediately... not to mention Rex Burkhead.

And JR Redmond keeps coming to mind but that might just be because of his role on the final drive of the first Super Bowl win.

Sam Gash, although it depends if you separate FB from RB.
This made me think of Keith Byars, who predated BB, but in my head I called him Lyndon Byars so I had to sort that one back out.

I was ok with White moving on because I thought someone would pay him $4m-$5m/year for a couple years. This is quite cool, though.

I think we have that memory because of exactly what you said. He had 13 receptions in that 2001 season, and then 9 in the 2001 playoffs. Still, he should never have to buy a beer in New England ever again.

Slight tangent, but Lewis was far more than just a passing back. 1400+ rush yards in only 30 games at 4.8 ypc. He was really really good his first year pre injury and his last year with the pats.

Love this re-signing, hopefully Harris or Sony becomes more of a catching threat so they aren't so one dimensional based on who's on the field, but they could do some really fun things with this offense this year with 2 back 2 TE sets with Harris and White out there together

But old enough to remember Marty Barret? Seems unlikely
Busted! I see what you all are getting at with pass-catching RBs and I was certainly off base insinuating James White was one of the OGs. Clearly my observations in such matters is steeped in recency-bias. But it's been a fun walk down pass-catching RB memory lane!

I know that for many Pats fans, Patriot history begins in 2001, but there were some productive pass-catching RBs before Brady/Belichick. Andy Johnson in the 70s; Tony Collins in the 80s; and Dave Meggett (the Pats' very own scumbag) for a few years in the 90s.

Tony Collins was one of my favorite players growing up. He had an interesting career. Over 800 yards rushing as a rookie and a 1000 yard season at age 24, but he really wasn't that much of a threat in the passing game until later in his career. His first four seasons his high for receptions was 27, then his last three years on the Pats he went for 52, 77 and 44.

I always think that Meggett was the Giants Scumbag that we just borrowed for a few years. So Hernandez still has (and hopefully always will have) the title.

A little tangential, but the first big receiving back I remember was Roger Craig, who had 1000 receiving yards in 1985 when BB and Parcells beat the 49ers and Parcells chortled, "How do you like that West Coast offense now?!"

Put that man in the hall of fame. Higher AV than Earl Campbell, Jerome Bettis, Terrell Davis and more running back Hall of Famers. Plus three Super Bowl rings.

Ed. Higher AV, not Hire.

To me... seeing this thread pop back up every so often, just reminds me how bonkers this offseason has been.

I had always had James White penned in as a Buccaneer. Still can't believe he came back.

Of all the new receivers we will see video of Cam working out with over the next few months, I'd love to see him throwng about 45,000 swing and screen passes to White in a Demoula's parking lot somewhere.

I'm really glad to have James White back and am very curious about his thinking. I assume TB12 lobbied hard for him, and I can see JW wanting to be closer to his mother after the family tragedy. Plus, I could see him getting more $ there than in NE. He signed a Filene's Basement contract.

In terms of football, White was criminally under-used by the Pats last year and Cam just isn't very good at throwing accurate screens that lead the receiver into good YAC position. Brady is an expert at it, as well as in disguising the screen to begin with.

I guess one point in favor of NE is that we now have a massive line to run behind or to follow on a screen. I also bet JW likes and respects BB and the rest of the crew.

Whatever his reasoning, I love the team BB is assembling and am psyched for what's ahead.

It is little mystifying. OTOH--White actually played with Cam, so he must think there's something there. OTTH-Maybe he just hates Tom Brady :eek:

As a TB12 maven and newly minted Tampa fan, I confess to being extremely dismayed by James' decision. There is no Buc who can reliably catch a screen or figure out where to go with it, to Tom's obvious distress. I cannot fathom this.

No one wants to sign with Tom, they want to sign with Bill. We all know this.
