Nice little throw by Mac, but pretty sure he's taking a sack on that play.
Yeah, let's talk about how #96 got around the edge pretty easily there. Who is that?

Though Jones did step up, feeling the pressure. But I think if it was a real game, #96 wouldn't have slowed up and instead would have had a pretty good run on the QB.

Not exactly a glowing review of Stevenson from Ivan Fears.

View: https://twitter.com/ZackCoxNESN/status/1422997786904125442
I don't know. The media folks thought he looked pretty good, and Fears had very good things to say about Stevenson during the June mini-camp. So maybe Fears is playing the psy-ops game to keep him extra motivated. I like the fact that Fears isn't publicly tipping his hand here, even if he had better things to say about Taylor last year.

He may be looking good in practice on things that are easy to see like running the ball, but there's a lot more to it than that. He may not be doing the little things off the field that a pro should be doing. Maybe he's late to meetings or not putting a lot of effort into learning or executing the protections. We all hear about consistency within the Patriots program and it could be that they are frustrated with his effort level from day to day. It could be a number of factors at work.

That sounds to me like Ivan trying to keep Stevenson on the straight and narrow, humbled, focused on his game, stacking plays, etc... I don't recall too many times that any of this regime's coaching staff members smack down a guy like "he needs to improve everything BECAUSE HE ALL AROUND SUCKS." I'm sure Stevenson has much to learn and I'm betting Fears is just keeping him on the path.

That was my first thought too - the Fears equivalent of 'let's not put him in Canton yet.' But it does make me wonder if Stevenson has a behind-the-scenes issue

If he did have a behind the scenes issue, I don't think Belickick and his staff would want to hint at that to the public. This comment struck me as similar to Bill Parcells' answer to a question about Chris Slade: "''A ball in high grass. Know what that is? Lost." N o cause for alarm, IMO.

Yeah the Fears comments seem consistent with the coaching of rookies taken in the first few rounds of the draft, similar to McDaniels saying when asked what Mac Jones is good at "getting yelled at".

Sorry if its been commented on already but the Major gripe with Mac was arm strength (and "athleticism" which seems a bit overblown). Isnt that something that can improve dramatically in 1 or 2 years of an NFL conditioning program?

It seems like some guys do make notable improvements (Tom Brady) while others do not (Brian Hoyer).

Sure, and that's also the key knock that made teams pass on Tom Brady and Joe Montana, so he's got that going for him.

I know this was a post about Mac but it seems at this early stage like Wilkerson is making this team. Every Pats beat reporter has talked about how he’s flashing on a daily basis. His RAS coming out of college was crazy high, like 9.5 or something, so he’s much more athletic than anyone else in the WR room. He’s saying all the right things too, mentioned that he’d like to play on every ST unit, which should only help his case getting on the roster.

Still way early, he’s much more likely to be nothing beyond deep depth, but it sure would be nice to get some more explosion in the passing game. This is still a pretty slow offense at the skill positions outside of Agholor.

YMMV - but I think its good to know that Mac is progressing (more useful than daily numbers)

Roughly 10 weeks removed from his first open OTA session, it’s easy to see how much more comfortable Mac Jones has grown in the Patriots offense.

The rookie opened the spring tentatively — as one would expect — checking down often and hesitating to push the ball downfield. It was clear he didn’t have a firm grasp on the playbook just yet.

Fast forward to Thursday’s second padded practice of training camp, and Jones was commanding things on an entirely different level. He was given the majority of reps in competitive 11-on-11 periods and pushed the ball all over the field. He took command of protections pre-snap, identified blitzing linebackers, and got the ball out in a timely fashion. The growth was obvious.

Bill probably gave the entire team orders to not answer the question. I haven’t followed daily, but I don’t recall any Patriot player confirming either way since camp opened.

Or it’s 2 no’s at the most important position.
Weren’t there pictures of Cam wearing a mask at practice when camp opened? That would imply that he is not vaccinated.

I've read and listened to a lot of coverage of training camp so far, and by far the most candid - balanced, some could say negative, but that's not the full story - is patriots.com. They're not slamming Mac and Cam or anyone else, really, but their reactions seem to be, as usual, the least hysterical in either direction. Very call 'em like I see 'em, except they appear to be "seein' 'em" with far less cheerleader-y-ish-ness. Patient. Grown-up. Meat and potatoes, just the facts, ma'am.

Agreed, Pats dot com has been my go-to news site.

If I want all kinds of speculation, I would rather get it here.

98.5 has a daily podcast with Alex Barth that is pretty good.
I listen to Barth and Lazar's podcast, but I don't know much about Barth. Does he know what he's talking about? Sometimes he comes across as EEI caller. Maybe not the worst EEI caller, but not the best either.

I know what you mean. Every now and then Barth can get a touch hot takey. I still think he is solid and more or less “gets it” when it comes to the NFL, though he clearly doesn’t know the X’s and O’s as well as Lazar. Which is fine. Not every piece of commentary and analysis needs to be a deep dive into the all-22.

I find them to be a very complementary pairing and think they play off of each other well. Two Lazars would probably be too dry and boring. Two Barths would risk devolving into Felger and Mazz territory.

Reading these early camp reports, I'm intrigued by the WR group. Everyone watching practices seems to agree that Harry looks like a different player so far. On the back end of the roster, Wilkerson sounds like a guy they may want to keep, which wasn't on anyone's radar two months ago.

There may be some tough decisions in that group, both on who makes the roster, and who sees the field.

I was in attendance of the stadium practice/consumer spending spree tonight. Obviously Smith was great, but Mac Jones just feels right and was making it look pretty easy to me. Not a scientific opinion, I know. Nordin was impressive. Still feels weird seeing the low numbers on D players.

Can’t wait to what they do with Smith once they get into the season. I expect him to line up all over the field.
Yep, it's certainly looking that way. I just really want to see some fun, creative usages.

Having no RB on the field, lining up empty backfield, then eventually running a pitch power run is pretty awesome.
