I don't get the Laken Tomlinson projection. They haven't used a pick earlier than the fourth round on a pure interior lineman (Mankins was a college tackle) and Tomlinson has only played RG. They tend to like smaller, quicker guys on the interior who are versatile - can pull, or zone block - and Tomlinson's pretty much a pure power guy. He checks the intelligence and power boxes for sure; I'd just be surprised if they used a first-rounder on an OL that doesn't have scheme or position versatility.

I agree Nomario.  If they were to take an OL in the 1st round my money would be on Jake Fisher from Oregon.

I think most draftniks are selecting him because of the intelligence/4 year starter/Pats guy/pats need interior line help and he's projected to go in the ballpark of where the Pats are picking.

I personally think they take a 320 lb plus guard based on my suspicion that the team is undergoing a philosophical change of sorts and wants to have a big interior line. They clearly wanted to go from Wendell to a bigger center in Stork rather than try and upgrade elsewhere and they tried hard (with Cannon, Devey and Flemming) to play bigger guys at one guard spot replacing Mankins before settling on Wendell.

EDIT: I freely admit I could just be totally wrong.

I just don't see the value in taking an OG like Tomlinson in round 1. If he's there in round 2? Sure.

If the Pats were to take a guard in round 1, I'd prefer an OT who can come in and start at G with the upside of developing into an eventual starter at T. Guys like Scherff, Collins, Clemmings, Flowers, Donovan Smith, Jeremiah Poutasi, etc fit the mold. There are also other guards who should be available in rounds 2-4 that could be early starters: Marpet, Cann, T. Jackson, J. Douglas, J. Miller, etc.

I trust the Pats to be able to find someone in the mid-late rounds for the interior line, like they did last year with Stork.

This is exactly my train of thought: they could draft a guy in the first who ends up starting at G, but I don't think they draft a guy in the first that's only a guard. You can get guys like that later. As RO mentioned, Fisher is another option, having played guard as a freshman.

Shockingly, Reiss (in his one and only mock draft) has WR Phillip Dorsett to the Pats at 32. I don't see a WR in round 1 unless it is Agholor, but we've all been wrong before.

Either way, I don't think I am staying up until 11-11:30 tonight... or am I? Shit.

I've been thinking Dorsett the last day or so as well. The guy has legit T.Y. Hilton potential and can take the proverbial top off a defense. He helps open things up for Gronk, Chandler and Edelman, and he has the ability to flip field position with every touch. Granted, they were hoping to get that sort of player in Bethel Johnson years ago, but Dorsett seems much more advanced as a WR than Johnson ever was.

This may well be a trolling mock, but as one great Gunny once said, you all are equally worthless. PFT has Shane Ray to the Pats at #32:

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/04/30/the-final-pft-mock-draft/

EDIT. While most of us do not expect this, ESPN has provided an answer, hopefully correct, to a question I had a couple of days ago. Per the network, for being cited for mere possession, he is "in the program". The League can random test him.

They also used picks on speed guys Brandon Tate and Taylor Price - but they were all later in the draft. Johnson, Tate, and Price were all bigger than Dorsett, too. I can't see a first on a small speedster like this - that would be like the least Patriotsy thing Belichick has ever done.

I heard Polian on ESPN talking about this the other day and he said guys like Ray can be randomly tested up to 10 times per month once they're in the program. You better be sure he can put the pipe down if you're going to use a 1st on him.

As for Dorsett, he's a binky of mine. I don't think I'd take him in the first though. He isn't a great route runner, from what I've seen/read. While his speed is a legitimate weapon, I worry that an all-speed guy like him would have a tough time picking up the offense. I'd rather wait until round 2 or 3 and see if Tyler Lockett is still on the board.

As I recall, Tate was a 4.5 guy, maybe high 4.4s. Price and Chad Jackson ran fast combine times, but they didn't play fast. Dorsett plays fast.

That being said, I agree Dorsett wouldn't be a particularly Patriotsy thing to do, but I do know that Belichick respects that program, they could use some stretch speed at WR, and Dorsett is a legit prospect to be picked in that area.

Really? Between Tyms/Dobson/Boyce I don't think they need speed at WR. I'll actually be pretty surprised if they invest early resources in that position in this draft (unless it's a potential game changing WR -- Green-Beckham, etc.).

Tyms and Boyce don't appear to be anything more than roster filler (potential healthy scratches when on the 53 man roster). (Boyce is another guy who ran a great combine time but doesn't really play that fast). I have hopes for Dobson, but 2014 was a lost year and who knows where his career is headed.

I could see NE not selecting a WR at all this draft, but I could also see them taking one at #32 if they love the player.

Here
Bertrand just pulled something out of his ass, in Jimmy G plus a pick for Haden, and I have to admit, I think that's a great idea. Any chance Cleveland would consider, say, Jimmy G and a 3rd for Haden? I'd even consider giving up the first if pats got back a 2nd, maybe a 3rd.

Not to turn this into a trade thread but I think they could package Haden and one of their #1s plus something minor to get Mariotta.  Don't see them moving Haden for anything else esp since they don't have quality CB's otherwise.
Does Jimmy G have any trade value?  I feel like we are in Mallett for Fitz circa 2013 territory.

Christ, that's once every 3 days if they choose. Josh Gordon may never get back in uniform.

I fully accept that a huge percentage of players smoke weed regularly. But not ones in the program. This is an enormous risk with a first-round pick, and there is no "lookin' the player in the eye" that will get you around it.
